About the staring. Black people are interesting to us in a good way. We haven't had colonies as a country, so we are not used to see darker skin humans as much as countries like the Netherlands or the United Kingdom. You are special to us, but we are proud that you visited Hungary 😊

So first of all, I'm Hungarian. Also a white guy. So let me give you my take on stuff you say. I hope you don't mind. 0:00 - 2:42 Yep. Here is the thing. Back in the 70's 80's, during communist times it was mandatory to learn Russian. So the older/middle aged generations speak that or nothing but Hungarian. After that there was a cultural vacuum where nobody really learned any foreign language. Starting with my generation, the 90's kids, we all learned some kind of foreign language so if you meet someone 30 or younger, they'll more than likely speak at least a bit of English. 2:43-4:06 Well said. I know Hungarian is, even for Hungarians btw (Good luck with "j" and "ly"), and yes, we are obviously happy to hear someone speak it, not because we, or well, at least in my case I just like to see that you are enjoying your stay enough to try learning it. But I think this is true in every country. 4:07-5:22 True and false. Most people I know really hate it when couples are going at it on the metro or bus, don't do it on public transport, but otherwise it's perfectly fine. If you are just affectionate towards your kids that's even heartwarming to see, so no issue there, I think it's cute. As for pecks when meeting, that's very person by person. I personally hate to kiss anyone even on the cheeks, let alone when I see some guys doing it with other guys I'm like "What's wrong with you?!", but yeah, it happens. 5:53-6:50 All true, but bread is awesome. I sometimes eat buns with túro rudi like a sandwich. You should see my dad, he eats pancakes with bread. 6:51-8:45 Meat: Yup, we eat a lot of that. Not weird for me at all, meat is love. Salt: I love salty food so I barely even notice it anymore. Potatoes: Yes, it's very much a staple food. Although I wouldn't say it's in everything. Usually other stuff is in it, or it's an optional side dish. paprika: ............I hate it. Yes I am a Hungarian who hates paprika. The spice version is fine but the veggie is horrible. It's also mostly offered as a spice similarly to salt and not really mandatory in the food, unless the veggies is. 8:46-10:56 I admit I'm sometimes surprised and stare a bit when I see a really dark skinned person, but only because it's sort of a rare sight, but my tough process is just basically "Hey, wow, I wonder where he is from." (it's nothing weird or malicious). But only when said person is like SUPER dark skinned. I probably wouldn't even bat an eye seeing Ritso, in fact, I really dig your hair. BTW the not looking away thing is because we are not ashamed to look at you since we are just looking because we found something we did not expect to see. Next time this happens say hi to that person and I'm 100% sure they will smile and say "hi" back and if it's in an environment where you can, you can even strike up a conversation by saying "I noticed you were staring a lot". They'll likely laugh and start talking to you normally. people who don't compliment you after looking that much are usually just people who are shy to do so. Or stalkers... Let's hope it's not that XD 10:57-12:15 What? Really? That's not too nice of them. Yeah, not gona lie, that's probably because you are a bit easier to notice. Especially if you are not a regular there. Can't say much about that. Sorry about our retard security guards. 12:16-13:37 Nah that's just retards being retards, plus a bunch of Roma people are unfortunately like that so it's just bad association. However I think that exists with some ethnic group everywhere. By which I mean, if I went to south Africa, I'm sure they'd do that to me too. Not really a "because you are black" issue that much, but not really a nice thing yes. However I'd like to say it's a rare case. Most people are not like that. 13:38-14:21 I wouldn't say everyone is like that and the police, would definitely step in. But most normal ppl wouldn't stop a fight, like, why would they? At least not on a random normal street. However if this happens in a public space like a square or in the metro or something. You can be damn sure someone will step in. 14:22-17:20 White guy here with curly hair. Can't relate, sorry XD 17:21-19:16 Okay so a lot to unravel. First of all preferences are wide, so if you had many bad experiences, I'm sorry, but it's a person by person case really. One thing though, when people tell you they never dated a black girl, they don't mean like "Oh hey, look at that, a black girl, blacky blacky black black", at least I don't think most do. We are the type of people who share what's on our mind a lot. Most likely it's just that they are excited to meet you and it's a new experience for them so they just tell you, not because they want you to feel like "The black girl" but because they think you are special in some form. I know it sounds weird a bit, but that's how it is. 19:17-21:10 I'd say while this is also of course person by person but generally true. First impressions mean a lot here, and since, as you said black people are a definite minority, it's in a sense feels "kinda weird" to date one for a lot of people. A lot of people are conservative about their taste, so I think your summary of this is generally pretty true. Even for me to some extent I'm sad to say. 21:11-22:00 WoW, you sure met some creepy ass people. God no. Most people I know are more of the romantic type really. If you get messages like that, run. I'd only do that with my girlfriend, and only if we are comfortable enough already.

If I could just add to this very thorough reply...I lived in California for 34 yrs & the Mexican men were notorious for hard staring, at everyone!! & They will not look away!! I would ask them, What are you looking at?! They wouldn't say anything & keep staring!!! Its even worse in Mexico!!...it personally drives me nuts & I don't find it flattering but rather creepy! like I said, they do it all the time to lots of ppl so therefore its not because I'm so special..If a guy is interested he has to have enough of a backbone to talk to me...a shy man isn't cute! You only live once, if you see something you like you go for it..if u get shot down then it wasn't meant for u but you won't be beating yourself up for not trying at least...better to try and fail then not try at all!

Hahaha! “Staring” as you call it is indeed part of the culture, but it’s actually making lots of eye contact, especially if they find you attractive, right along with the compliments. Men and women aren’t afraid to make extended eye contact, its part of flirting, which is a huge part of the culture, just like public displays of attention. Women are just as comfortable initiating the eye contact, which I think is great! As far as the security guards in stores are concerned, they actually follow Hungarians around too. I don’t know why. But entertaining video, you made me smile.... You’re sweet! 😁

@katalint1963
@katalint1963 4 жыл бұрын
I think I have to say something about the "staring" :D :D :D :D In Hungary it is normal to stare and we do not even realize that we are doing it most of the time. Hungarians who never been abroad would have no idea what you talk about, because it is that normal. Especially looking in the eye and maintaining the eye contact is normal and it's also have a kind of honesty feature - I don't know how else to say. Like as we look each other's eyes openly and not checking out each other in secretive way kind of thing. Of course you surely got more attention, but even if you were not black people would stare at you in this country. I have only realized this when I moved to UK. I even had a funny conversation with another Hungarian about "did you also realized that people do not look at each other in this country? why do you think that is?" and once I almost got into trouble for staring at someone. Before the smart phone era staring was even more of a habit I think. I remember once I made a whole bkv bus shut up when I boarded with my studded high-heel boots. You believe it or not, the whole bus went silent and every single person on the bus were starring at my boots. I was wearing the same boots in Manchester and no one realized it I think. And if you go into a small village in Hungary, even nowadays you are going to be stared at solely for not being local. For example now I live in a village where only 1700 people live and basically the road ends here. Literally everybody knows us, not because we are famous for any reason, they know us only because we live here. They know who we are, when we moved here, what my husband does for work, what I do for work and how my kids perform at school etc. So if a stranger (not local person, but white Hungarian person) comes into a place like this everybody will stare at that person and try to figure out who that person is. :D :D :D :D

As a Hungarian, thank you for making this video, and for trying to learn Hungarian! Look at it as a challenge: if you are able to learn Hungarian, you are able to do anything. And sorry for the staring, it's just very uncommon to see a not white or Asian person (especially in smaller villages). Btw, may I give you some expressions to help you? Like: 1. Kellet neki mint faltörő kosnak a fotocellás ajtó. (He needed it as much as a battering ram needs a self-opening door.) 2. Hogy a könnyűbúvárok tisztítsák meg a szélvédődet! ("Hopefully the scuba divers will clean your car's front window!" We say this on the roads when someone is driving on a very mad and unsafe way.) 3. Ne bízz kecskére káposztát! (Don't trust a goat with guarding a cabbage! Like, don't give your wallet to a homeless man to hold because he will run away with it.) That's what I can say now, but there are plenty of other expressions too, Dunát lehetne rekeszteni velük! (It means "You could build a dam out of them on the Danube", and we say it when there's really plenty of something.) :)

Dear Ritso, your video is soo nice, I was wondering that as a Hungarian I have the same observations. Traditional Hungarian food or let's call it a diet is not healthy, it contains lots of bread, white flour, potato, meet and red paprika...I think this is why all the international restaurants are soo popular, no matter if they are fast food, or expensive places, they are really popular here. We are also bored of the old Hungarian dishes 😀. And the security guards: yes they follow me too!!! I think they like to stare at women. One of them came to me and checked my bill and my basket if they are the same, and he told me that he does it "for the camera" so that he seem to work hard, but anyway he asked if we could date.. Cosmetics: yes it is strange! I usually try them at the drogeries and most of the pressed powders or even "bronzers" are ligther than me, or they sell blushes that are so light that they can not be seen on me! There should be a change, the drogeries should order bigger sortiment of shades of these products, I think that the majority of their stock is totally useless even for local people. I already wrote some reviews about it on their website I don't know if they read them..

Hi, your experience is legit. I studied in Budapest many many years ago and my wife is Hungarian. I am black and almost a 7 foot man mountain, so I was stared at a lot in my days and it didn't bother me, -but at times when I was with a girlfriend and I didn't want her to be embarrassed, I always asked with a frown face "what's up, haven't you seen handsome tall/black man before?" (mi van, nem láttál még szép magas/fekete férfit?) or "what are you waiting for?, don't you want to propose?" (mire vársz? nem akarod megkérni a kezem az eljegyzéshez?) And that quenched the atmosphere for that moment. 😂🤣 Budapest is fun, so don't worry, enjoy Budapest. I still visit Budapest yearly 👍🏾

what i don't get about the staring is that i believe you have been often stared at for being black, as there is really a small percentage of non-white races living in hungary. but to be fair, i'm white and i have been stared at rather often while i was living there, it is just a thing i guess. but people really don't look away. but just to be clear, despite all of this, it IS rude to stare and mums are telling their kids all the time "don't point, don't stare" and yet people are still staring all the time... it's definitely weird.

I am a black Brazilian living in Hungary (Budapest) since 2017, I now speak Hungarian at an intermidiate/advanced level (not tested though) I feel the difference in treatment when they have to serve (at shops) a tourist in English and me, in Hungarian and they always apologize for speaking English with me when I answer in Hungarian... and then they switch, just once a guy at McDonald's kept Hungarian till the end, and then said "You're Hungarian is good", I replied "Yours too" then he said "I'm Hungarian" to which I said "me too " and he said congratulations 😅 I never understood the congrats hahaha, but that was funny. I may upload a video about my experience here too. In general they don't look at me with bad look, I just had 1 experience with a homeless (or kinda) years ago and they feel I'm not African, but they think in general I'm French or Cuban.

About the staring... I know it's strange for the foreigners (especially for Americans) to stare openly at each other on the street, but that’s normal here. And not just staring, if you ask someone "how you are?", you probably won’t get your habits answered. Many people here tell their privacy problems to even a stranger, but that also means you can tell your own too. Staring is similar to this. For example, I especially like to pocket my phone and observe people around me. There was an example of someone not accepting this and reacting aggressively (especially those who think I was staring at them because I don’t like they being there), at which point I apologized and explained that this was not the case. I understand that there are people who don’t like watching them, but many times I don’t even realize I’m doing this. It is almost my lifeblood for me to meet my gaze with someone, especially in this electronic world. And I don’t even look at appearances, I’m more curious about what he’s doing or what kind of person he might be. And these can be learned from an eye context. That’s why I don’t usually look away. I don't know how other Hungarians are with this, but I think Hungary is characterized by an almost cheeky interest in other people. And that applies to all kinds of people. If someone still stares at you with bad intentions go a little further and there will be no problem. But as a consolation, I would add that men in Hungary like to poke beautiful girls. If no one is staring at you for days and you don’t get at least one or two jerk comments on the street, it indicates that you are a boring and undesirable phenomenon.

Hi, first off, this isn't my site, I am a 66 year old American female living in Budapest. My husband and son are HU and US citizens. I think your English is very good by the way. I am half Polish and 1/4 German but 1/8th native American as well and it shows in my facial features. I look different even though I am white.I have been visiting Hungary since I was a young wife and mother , first time in 1978. I have ALWAYS even t this day being stared at here in Hungary so not sure it has much to do with being black but more being anyone who stands out. I'm very tall,slim and red heaired, don't look my old age and don't dress like your typical old lady does here. I am the talk of the building by wearing tight jeans and leather jackets. I had a US black friend in her early 40's who moved to HU with her disabled father. They often had people bothering them asking silly questions and thinking my friend was easy because she was black. In the end her father passed away here during C-19 and she has since moved to anther EU country . She now gets hassled in Sweden by African blacks, for some reason they don't seem to like American blacks.So my friend says.I don't really know just repeating what she told me.Hungarian men overall are rather fresh with ladies at times, I know been around them for over 46 years. They often say bold things and I'm still not sure if it is expectable behavior in Hungary or they use the "trying to speak English" thing as an excuse to cover their rudeness.Thankfully it desn't happen to me these days but in my youth men here would say things to me while I was walking with my HU husband and had our baby with us. Just let it go and don't worry about it, don't feed bad behavior.Good luck and take care.( I was lucky my husband thought it was funny at the time otherwise things would of gotten bad)

Oh yes, about 3 weeks ago while my 73 year old HU husband and I were looking at makeup at Rossman the security guy was right on top of us, it was uncomfortable. So much so that silly me asked him his opinion on a shade just to throw him off a bit.Usually we are watched inside the Chinese shops more then anywhere else. Our son now lives as a 6'3" tall white red head in Japan with his Japanese wife. He really gets stares.
@pindur47
@pindur47 3 жыл бұрын
One more thing, I hardly speak Hungarian it seems my old HU husband really doesn't like to to talk to strangers so I have not learned much of the language, seems weird I know. He also wishes me to move away frm HU if he should ever pass on. Seems HU men are super jealous even of their old ladies! Hungarians also aren't bit into smiling at strangers in public. I was raised in sunny, happy S.Ca. and used to be told by strnagers to smile when growing up. My mother made us smile too, she would say smile or I'll give you smething to frown about. IN HU my husband said if you smile at a stranger then you are either trying to pick them up, your are drunk or you're just insane.It's hard to not smile but I no longer do so in public,That's sort of sad to say.

I am Hungarian, living in the US. Not too long ago I was thinking about this make up problem,because i realized,here we can buy any shade,even the darkest. But it is really that important,to use make up, corrector,powder,etc. All of them are bad for the skin Other thing is the hair. So what happens,if can't get the special stuff? Microphone head or what? Don't know, I am a very simple woman,7 bucks on dying my hair every other month, and 6 bucks on mascara appr.every 3-4 months. Hairdresser:depends on what length I want,appr.4 times a year,or less. Lipstick,colors (is that paletta??),not even annually. Other than these, have permanent make up on my lips and eyeliners(very natural). Most women to me sounds very problematic to me on their looks..... Simply can't do it, But I look good,also very authentic !Promise! :))))

My dear, the obsession of your beautiful skin tone from Hungarians is because of most of them trying to get more darker skin colour,, they are taking a lot of sunbath, using browning creams or using tanning machines. You won't believe how hungarian women can be obsessed to have your beautiful natural skin tone. I can imagine it can make you feel bad since they highlighting the difference in your skin tone but when someone said you have beautiful skin tone or saying you are so nice brown is out of positive jealousy as many women has to work hard to being same as you are naturally. Many women thinks that pale skin is unhealthy and they are prefer to being health brown. 😊

If it makes you feel better, Hungarians are known for staring at people regardless of where they are from. XD Ususally it's because there's something about that person that they find interesting, unusual or beautiful, but other times it's definitely rude... Same goes for following people around in grocery stores. I'm white, born and raised here, and sometimes that happened to me too. Usually when I was the only man in the store, or the most muscular one. In your case I suspect it's just because of plain old racism. We don't have a history of colonialism or some crazy story about black people stealing from a store, but a lot of people are racist because of American movies, news stories and good old right wing government propaganda spreading hate.

I like to add my own experiance: I'm Hungarian and i like to read about the products i interested to buy. Security person found it this strange i guess, (or he just had no other things to do) and he followed me everywhere, make me feel like i'm a criminal, so unconfortable. Very client unfriendly behavior. I get so irriteted finally, that i did not buy a product. Lot's of change happaned in the last 30 years in Hungary.. Before you did not see security in shops and now they are everywhere. I think way too much. but ofcourse this should not be a probleem if they would not behave so client unfriendly. Other wise i think Hungary a very nice country to live. It is surely not England, France, Netherland or Sweden when it is comes to have long and breed experiace with foreigners. Culture shock is everywhere, some time is less and sometime is too much, what makes it difficoult for years to feel comfortable to stay. I wish you a pleasent stay in Hungary ! 🤗🌞

Having both parents come from Hungary, this is my perspective as an American. As a whole, I find Hungarians to be shallow, closed minded, materialistic, and racist, not only toward people with African roots, but toward Jewish people as well. They stare, because they are racist. They follow you around, because they are racist. They will compliment you on your skin color, because that is all they see. I’d say it’s pretty safe to guess that you don’t see many biracial Hungarians. They are too afraid of losing their “white culture” which was largely brought over with them, coming to America. I applaud your bravery in making this video, and putting a spotlight on the ignorance that people of color are still faced with today. Personally, it turns my stomach. But, I’m proud to say that I broke the cycle. My son, has never understood racism, sexism, or homophobia.. There’s one race… human. We should all be able to love who we love, and free to live are lives as WE choose to!. Let’s stop the nonsense!

Try not to take the insults on yourself, we do that also "indoors". Some hungarians are just rude and mean as there are rude and mean people everywhere. Also (insulting others) in a way is part of the culture or at least part of a subculture, i mean there are literal tv shows built onto that. Of course this should not be a thing, but it is and it will take a while to leave, or maybe it will never leave and we will always have crazy people shouting all over the streets wanting to kill you(not you personally this is just what some of them shout).

Hi, Has a British born person who's dad escaped Hungary in 1956 and came to the UK, who later on married my British/Irish mum , I can tell you from coming to Hungary all my life since 1970 with family and my own family by car all our lives. I have praised this country for years none stop with friends at work and anyone i know. We spent 6 weeks of the summer in Hungary every year, I have to admit the communist days was far better with regards to the poorer families having money, now it is 2021, I absolutely hate the majority of the people, they are racist to me because i am half Hungarian, the Hungarian people live on jealousy, I am embarrassed that my own father was Hungarian, he was violent towards my mum, beating the shit out of her when drunk on liquor, Infront of me my brother and sister, he was locked up that many times. i was the youngest out of the three. He would walk our dog when i was 5 - 6 years old, when i can remember, he would lift the dog up with the choke collar and say you will not pull now you bastard, Cruelty to animals is off the scale here in Hungary, Infact barbaric !!! I hated him, times i thought of stabbing him, he ruined my life, and i see Hungarian people with the same mentality now in Borsod where my dad's family are from. Would you believe i loved him later on, he taught me to drive, and drive lorries, and even turned me into a violent person, but I never did what he did, I just couldn't walk away from trouble, but i am so anti bullying and animal cruelty, I realise how evil he was until he was around 50 years old, he was a heavy drinker , smoker, dieing at only 60 years old, but he worked hard to keep a nice roof over our heads, but now i realise he may have had a bad life escaping Hungary at 16 , but that should never give anyone the excuse to take it out on your child's mother and children..I met a Hungarian woman later on from my family's local town, I have also got myself a farm house now for renovation, biggest mistake of my life was moving here, 3 months or 6 months a year ie spring, summer time is enough for your own sanity..Problem with majority of people in Hungary they have no idea how we live in UK to here... I absolutely hate the majority of people, I have had money stolen, or items every year coming for holidays, they will take advantage of any foreign person with money. I am refraining what i want to say, it's the most racist country i have visited in my life. Hungary is beautiful, shame the people are so pissed off and jealous. I find Hungarian people IE not from gypsy decent far worse than the gypsy people, I get on better with poor gypsy families than Hungarian families even though, now they are all Hungarian, but they still seperate themselves as Hungarian or Gypsy. I dropped everything to live here, and now i realise it's a life far from what i had in Nottingham, bars, clubs, British humour is way off from the Hungarian humour, I am a very sad, depressed person who is living a life of unhappiness. I find the people have plenty of mouth, but soon has you get heavy handed with them they run straight to the police.. I have had lots of issues here..I am ashamed of my blood!! Good look with your life, you seem a very happy person. But you will not see what i have seen , I know the language , I know the people now for who they are..Some are nice, but majority are not, also my dad actually loved UK to Hungary, he only returned for his mum dad sister etc..His life was England from 16 years old.
