Hey André! I hope you enjoyed your time in Hungary! :) Unfortunately, many Hungarians don't speak foreign languages - especially the older people. But that isn't your fault. And these situations can be really funny (or awkward, it depends on the point of view :D) Anyway, Hungary has a lot of beautiful places - Fertőd is one of them. A general comment and suggestion: - Hungarians are nice but proud people and do not like to be put into a situation where they feel dumb. When you speak English to someone who does not understand it is very unpleasant as they feel they are being seen as dumb - in addition Hungarians are shy so filming them without permission is not nice - it is not a bazaar, you are expected to buy. If you do not whant to buy just looking (and recording) you shall tell the lady. As a general rule in Hungary you do not touch a product unless you intend to buy it (just out of curiousity do not touch it) So I can assure you everyone feels very uncomfortable in such a sitation: not understanding what you whant and being filmed how "dumb" they are. People are not rude only they would like to avoid and escape from such a frustrating situation.

To all the people suggesting the older lady was being rude, We English have a terrible disease of the mind that makes us believe that wherever we go, people should talk English back to us, or understand our language. Even worse, when somebody doesn't understand, we even belittle them further by saying it again in English but with the accent of the other person, as if it would help them to understand. I am sorry there are so many ignorant English people out there that do this. We have been separated by water on our Island and we are not as interconnected as those in Europe. But this is no excuse! Our language spread worldwide so we became lazy and wrongfully believed others will automatically speak our language. Andre is not rude and speaks a lot more language than the average Brit! But in this case whilst it makes entertaining viewing I would consider it rude (not illegal) to film interactions!

We Hungarians can learn English or any other language with great difficulty. Many people say that Chinese and Hungarian are the most difficult languages in the world to learn. If a Hungarian native speaker wants to learn English / or any other language /, it is just as difficult for us to learn a foreign language as it is for a foreigner to learn English. I studied English myself for years and I can't speak English, if someone speaks English slowly with simple words, I understand it. Young people speak a foreign language. But not enough. At school, it is compulsory to study one foreign language for 8 years and another foreign language for 4 years. A law was passed 10 years ago that only those who have passed an intermediate level language exam can get a university degree. This law has just been abolished because most of the graduates did not receive their diplomas due to the lack of language skills. Many politicians, artists and celebrities lie that they speak a foreign language and become the subject of public ridicule because it turns out that they do not speak a foreign language... Some people live a life in foreign countries without learning the language of that country. I have a childhood friend who worked in England for 9 years and doesn't even speak English today... A doctor friend of mine has an intermediate level language exam, he thought he would be able to communicate with patients and colleagues in Great Britain and it turned out that he didn't understand a word of what he said people speak /Glasgow / . A lot of comedies and jokes arise from the way we speak, or we get confused when people speak to us in a foreign language, education and politics have failed in this regard in Hungary.

@@ariostorossi1295 As I said, if you insult the other country, don't be surprised if you get a negative reaction. And if you think you're so smart that you like to pass judgment on other countries, you're just plain hypocritical. You don't even notice it in your own writing, but you generalize by saying that only xenophobic people live in Greece and Hungary. (Don't just read hateful information created by the media of other countries) If, in fact, this negative behavior of yours stems from a bad experience, you have to imagine that this happens in every country. There are conniving, trouble-making people everywhere, and I doubt that your country is an exception. But since, unlike you, I don't like to describe countries based on the bad behavior of a few people, I wouldn't be the one out of the two of us who was aberrant based on your answer. Nevertheless, I will not judge your country based on your lousy behavior. I'm sure that you don't know more about the behavior of Hungary than I do, since I'm Hungarian and I've lived here since 1984, so there's no need, my dear, for the nonsense that tourists from other countries are humiliated and exposed to constant, incessant atrocities. (even American actors do not experience this) By the way, I could easily tell you about the atrocities and evils committed by other European countries against us in the past and, unfortunately, even now. Even so, I'm not going to put all the people under one hat just because of the vile attitude of some of them. (postscript: I bet you wouldn't like it if others insulted your country, and I'm sure you'd stand up for it anyway. However, if you still don't understand the essence of the whole argument, then there's nothing to talk about).😑🤦

Your skin is not a problem, but shooting a video without permission and showing everything, but not paying for anything is unpolite too. Szia is hello in Hungarian, but only for friends the same age as you or younger. When you talk to people who can be your parents by age, you should be more respectful. Personnaly i wouldn't like it when a complete stranger start filming me without asking! Doesn't matter what skincolor indeed. And then leaving with saying see ya! Sounds almost the same as Szia that even for a foreigner from your country sounds to me like there a joke to him. 17:40 Well, I happen know beers to some degree. Get wine instead, as light beer in Hungary is generally too thin and bitter, especially compared to Czech beer. Some imported beer can be found cheaper and tastier. The Steffl you drank is one of the cheaper imports, it's from Austria, it's alright but a little thin IMHO. However, I can recommend craft breweries like Szent András Sörfőzde and especially Pannonhalmi Apátság. They are expensive, but you're in for a treat. The wheat beer of Szarvasi Sörfőzde was a good experience for me and it's cheaper.

@ahmyo12 жыл бұрын
@@streettravelxxi What you wrote, although it would be a simple thing, has a more complex reason. You have only met a few people. Moreover, they are usually older people who did not have many opportunities to learn languages or study when they were young. Especially people in rural areas had and have fewer opportunities. So they are insecure, confused in unexpected situations, sometimes not a little. Unfortunately, under the socislist system (which lasted for about 40 years before the 90s), this age group became isolated, they could not go abroad, they basically lived only for work, most of them never left their settlements. Their attitude is not as relaxed as a young person. Communism left its mark on Hungarian society, and there are still many wounds to heal. On the other hand the rural lifestyle makes one reclusive. I was able to open up to the world when I moved to the big city, Budapest. But this process of opening up took me several years. 🙂 I can completely understand the rural people. One thing's for sure, you have to approach them with empathy, they will give you their hearts, not just their thanks. 🙂

The Steffl beer you bought is one of the cheaper beer brands. Generally if the beer has corn in it then there is a chance that it is made of lower quality ingredients. Unfortunately the education of languages is quite low in Hungary and because of the laws of the current government (no need of language degree for the university degree) it is decreasing even in the universities. The lady in the supermarket was quite grumpy, I guess she isn't too motivated about her job and the communication barriers + the presence of the homeless guy made she a bit frustrated :D

Don't torture yourself with small towns and villages xD Go to Budapest, Debrecen or Szeged, there's plenty to see there, and most of the people I came across know english :)) but in small towns and stuff, they don't speak english, almost at all xD

what's the point though of travelling to a country without the small gesture of teaching yourself a few common phrases in target country your intending to discover? it can not be that hard to learn basics surely I attest. even in big cities not every citizen in those cities speak English either English is not mandatory to learn in Hungary- You are allowed to just speak native Hungarian and forget about English altogether if the Hungarian doesn't understand a word of English that's tough biscuits for the tourists.

I think the shop attendand was a bit rude because you were filming, some people really don't like being filmed and the fact that she couldn't understand you made it even worse but she calmed down towards the end.
