"does that improve the look" when turning off the house lights is an important one, bc even though in most cases that does look better, on my most recent short that I DPed i left the house lights on but controlled them with black wrap and augmented them using skypanels and asteras to achieve the desired look for the scene

Absolutely, not least because having to setup and balance all of the lighting takes so much time and also can compromise how you can frame and block scenes due to stands/frames etc.

I’m referring to having one side of the talent being darker than the other. Comparing the overhead lighting to the light coming through the windows you can see even illumination overhead vs. A more contrasted/shaped lighting across the space and their faces.
