Sweden is a paradise. Many societies have fake "openness" - Sweden is truly awesome. Not perfect, but awesome and better than most of the world.

My husband is Swedish and lived in Brazil for 3 years. He says there is no better country in the world than Brazil to be gay. Now we live in Sweden and I could not agree more. In Brazil, the society is religious but very open at the same time: the country of carnival. It is a different story if you are transgender but if you are gay or lesbian, you will be more than fine. Things have changed drastically in the past 20 years for good.

Brazil is a really complex country. I am lesbian and lived in São Paulo, but I didn't feel comfortable holding hands with a girlfriend in some places. my ex and I were harassed in a restaurant, the guy pushed my ex and she fell, we called the police and they didn't do anything. Brazil had around 250 deaths of LGBT+ people last year due to hate crimes, most of them in São Paulo. And now the pentecostal church has too much power over politics, so I feel a little safer in Buenos Aires, where I now live with my wife.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It's so important for everyone to hear about, but also very important for queer people to see other queer people. It lifts the spirits! :)

Why is this clip called "Gay in Brazil vs. Sweden"? There is no mention of anything about being gay in Sweden.

Thanks Thiago for sharing your story I love Brazil and it's my one of favorite countries and you make a good point Brazil is advance when it comes to the laws with LGBT rights but the social environment towards LGBT can be hard I know the discrimination there is not severe like other countries I as a gay person I always used saw LGBT rights as marriage, discrimination protection etc and not really study the social environment because you can have all the LGBT rights but the social environment towards LGBT is still hostile so over the years I learn that LGBT activism isn't only about getting laws made but also have people respect us as human beings and work for tolerance

I Dont think it is very rare in Brazil, I have no friend in Brazil who were not accepted from Their families. In Brazil we have laws against Homofobie, gay couple can get married and have a normal life. I think he was telling more about his experience.

You have to be aware that Brasil is a continental country, so your own experience in have "no friends that were not accepted from their families" is also very personal and probably related to the local you live on. I'm a gay guy and I also live here in Brazil. I was born in Goiás, a central state that is way more conservative that São Paulo (a state further south of the country, for non-brasilians), were I live now. It's completely different experiences and realities, even being in the same country. When you consider Brazil as a whole, not only the states in the southeast, I would say that we are, indeed, a dangerous country for LGBTQIA+ community (just look at the almost 50 MILLION people that voted in Bolsonaro in the past elections, an open transhomophobic politician, for example...)

You are probably upper middle class. I would say it's mostly accepted in society at large. But not so much inside the family. I would guess 50% of Brazilians would have some sort of hard time with family.

Tack Tack🎉🎉 I wish I could live in a society that people would treat gay or lesbian the same like how they would react to ordinary straight people without discrimination, love and peace❤❤

Thiago is clearly talking about his own experience of being homosexual in Brazil, especially because he comes from a very conservative city in Brazil, which is Belém. But as in every country you find people with conservative attitudes, or less conservative, or even with very open-mind, it is like that in Sweden too, if you go to small towns as a gay couple, you will probably suffer discrimination too. I lived in Denmark for 13 years, a country more open in mentality than Sweden and the first country in the world to recognize civil unions between homosexuals, and yet Denmark has discrimination against homosexuals, as there are also many conservative people as well as in Sweden. So therefore the LGBT controversy is still a global issue and always with religious principles that worsen depending on the predominant religion of that country, just as every religion has conservative and non-conservative practitioners, in addition to atheists and others who are more adept at believing in various religions.

that's only his personal experience, brazil is a huge country with different opinions about everything. like any other country, some people support the lgbtqia+ community, some others don't, but at the end, we leave in a democracy in brazil and you can be and do whatever you want. plus, brazil has the biggest pride parade in the world in sao paulo, around 3M ppl celebrating on the streets. i could even say this guy comes from a small city in brazil, belem, like he said and it reflects his life experience, but i am sure, there are a lot of open-minded ppl in his home town. in the big cities, you see lgbt couples kissing, making out on the streets and nobody cares. furthermore, same sex marriage is legal in brazil. finally, his testimony is only a piece of this big and complex puzzle called brazil.
