Johan Sköld came out in his fourties and in this video he gives us an overview of his life. He mentions what it was like being a closeted teen during the AIDS pandemic, about struggling with your sexuality throughout a marriage, about coming out to all of his friends at his Birthday party when he turned 50 and about what it's like coming out a bit later in life and entering the LGBTQIA+ community now.

The biggest coming out is to yourself - so true! Especially for those of us who grew up in the times of so much stigma surrounding being LGBTQ+ . Thank you Johan for your words of wisdom :)

I’ve never come across this channel before, but this showed up on my explore page so hopefully KZbin recommends this video to a lot more people. The information presented here is invaluable! I feel like a lot of LGBT+ people in the US and the UK don’t really think about the perspectives of LGBT+ people living in other places around the world, so this is an excellent resource to learn about those things. As a gay trans man from the US, I’ll be bingeing!

So proud of you. I know how you feel. I was outted at 50 years old. I've always known from the age of 11years old. I can relate to you. Back in the 80s was so different. Where i come from. Ireland was a very closed book. Married a nice Man at 21years of age thinking it was just a phase I was going through. At 21its young thought it would fizzle out. Jeezuz it got worse than ever. But I'm glad now better person for it. A day at a time for me. Society has alot to answer for.🌈🌈🌈🌈

I came out at age 38, after lots of hesitation and denial. I'm now out and proud despite still living in a Middle Eastern country. Luckily I have a supportive family and friends.

I'm not religious myself and don't feel comfortable in those kinds of institutions but it is nice to see so many religious queer folks on your channel, the more places that are welcoming to queerness the better

I am generally kind of worried about how non-religious people will react to the fact that I have a lot of queers of faith on my channel. Your comment calmed me down a bit - thanks for that! 😊🌈💕

@Queers of the world I can totally understand the nerves, I actually used to have much stronger knee jerk reactions to religious folk but have learned that some ppl are always going to find faith no matter no matter what, so if these spaces exist let them be welcoming and inclusive for all who want it

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am a 22 year old gay man and I have always wondered how the gays in their 40+ are doing. I hope that everyone gets to a point where they could be themselves safely. Remember no one has to come out when they are not ready or in danger.

As I watched this one I began wondering once again how different in general things are in other countries than in the US. Things have certainly progressed for LGBTQ+ folks here since the 80s but there are many places, communities, circles of friends, workplaces, places of worship, educational institutions, etc here in the US where being publicly out could be very dangerous on any number of levels. Despite there being some progress made for younger generations of folks in some areas, many areas still exist here where young people are bullied (sadly, sometimes to death) for even being perceived as LGBTQ+ in school, their community, and family. Johan's story of acceptance from all of those around him is what I would hope for people everywhere!!

Amazing video Thank you for sharing your story with the world. In August and September I finally came out as gay at 51 years of age. The love and support I received from family and friends was amazing and heartwarming. Even my own mother is very supportive and also she said she knew . I also was dating an older partner for 13 years that passed away in 2017 He was 48 plus years older then me and all that time my mom knew that him and I were dating and was cool about it. It's amazing that I I'm now free and can live my truth It's an amazing feeling

I know many gay men of his age who found it too risky to come out during the AIDS crisis and married women instead, divorced and have adult children today. I am in that generation too and understand how fraught with anxiety the world was, and rightly so, surrounding HIV/AIDS at that time. Many of those men credit marriage to a female as shielding them from AIDS and allowing them to be alive today, while many in this generation of gay men tragically died of AIDS.

Wow, I am from his generation and have many parallels. I finally stopped suppressing this part of me after my wife left me - also for other reasons. Not quite as out as Johann is but I also decided early on to commit myself to monogamy. I hope you find someone to love and share your wonderful self with.

Hi Johan, I am 72 & have been gay for more than 40 years. Met many married men who had children. One of them told me that he still loved his wife but he is 99 % gay. It's not important to consider if you are gay or Bi . It is more important to be happy with a partner for the rest of your life. Another Dutch friend separated from his wife , had a 6 year relationship with a gay Thai boy. The latter had a sex change but they still live together. ❤ love is love . Live & let live !
