Tim is someone for whom it seems booze and coke rewired his brain then he realised he didn't need them to get to the same place as far as raw spontaneous comic ranting. I suspect he quit booze because otherwise he couldn't quit coke because a few drinks would lead to a few lines. This seems to be much more of a key to his character than the fact he is gay.

That's a really interesting point. For some people their sexuality is their defining "journey" but for others it's stuff like addiction (or trauma, or depression, racism, etc). Everyone has a life path so there's always something but there are also obvious big ticket items like these.
