Being Jeremy Vine doesn't mean you're always right

Jeremy is becoming known for 'raising awareness' of poor driving, though on close inspection of some of his clips, it seems he creates issues that really don't warrant making a fuss of. Fanning the flames between cyclists and drivers does not seem a sensible way to go..

I’ve spoken to many cyclists about this; they always say the same things: “I’m only putting myself in danger” and “I’ve you can’t deal with me being on the road, you shouldn’t be driving.” They accept no responsibility for their safety but expect everyone else to keep them safe.

At least there are street lights so you can see them, on the country roads in Yorkshire cyclists do just the same when it is pitch black, hard to spot until headlights pick them up.

Agree.. but with all the lights there is a lot of dazzle and you really have to look.. I seriously didn't see the rider at 1:10 until you hear me say it.. because there was so much light glare.

As a cyclist I fully agree with you and should at least TRY to be seen.

I used to get this a lot driving to work 0500. People with no lights dark clothing, even though most worked in places that required them to wear hi-vis they wouldn’t wear it cycling to and from work.

With the amount of incidents Jeremy Vine has had it's him that should be banned from cycling. Drivers do things wrong but he just carries on so he can confront the driver just to get a good video to put online. If he was a decent cycling he should be good enough to just make adjustments to his riding to make these incidents a non event.

Agree. I'm surprised the BBC condone some of his Twitter feed and some of his guests on his shows, like cyclingmikey, who he's spoken to more than once I believe. If that isn't bias, what is? I understood the BBC charter insists the corporation show no bias.. yet it seems they do..

I remember encountering a cyclist late one night peddling along a rural A road in the dead of night with no lights or reflective clothing whatsoever. If it wasn't for the car in front swerving and me going at a reasonable speed I would have likely hit him.

You say they’ve got no lights and you can’t see them, but do forgive me if I’ve got this wrong, you’ve managed to see them perfectly well? Yes, they legally need to have lights on their bikes, but what risk are they posing to you in your Range Rover? Deliveroo riders are a law onto themselves though. :)

Watch the vid. These cyclists are literally relying on me/other drivers seeing and avoiding them, rather than a. riding with lights as per the law and b. taking responsibilty for themselves to be seen. As for whichever car I'm driving, that's irrellevant, What if a driver takes emergency evasive action, swerves and ploughs into a pedestrian, swerves and hits a wall and so on. If riders can be quick to criticise poor driving they must also accept critism for poor cycling.

@@andy-maunder You seem to be seeing them with no problems whatsoever. Granted a light would help, but it’s not as if they’re invisible objects that just pounce out onto the unwary…!

I also saw several pedestrians with no lights, AND dark clothing. Why should you be allowed to drive 1t (or more) of metal at 30mph and put others in danger if you cannot see them? You are not driving on a motorway.

Thank you for such an insightful and valued contribution. I drive with lights, indicators and care, on roads. The vehicle I drive here is 3T and at no stage do I even touch 30mph. The video is about cyclists taking responsibility for being seen as opposed to relying ( on me ) to see them.. but as the video shows, I’m very observant. So maybe try to keep up in future. For now, cheers.

@@andy-maunder I happen to agree with you about cyclists and other road users taking responsibility for their (in)actions. What I don't agree with is your lack of guidance on how to deal with these situations. It sounds very much like victim blaming. You perhaps need to keep up with modern road safety techniques that do not focus exclusively on apportioning blame, but include efforts to engineer out problems and diminish consequences when someone does make a mistake, as we all do. I think this started in Sweden and is called Vision Zero.

Where I am, virtually every cyclist is on the footpath, even though there is very little traffic, other than rush hour (small town ,35,000). If they're not on the pavement, they play chicken with cars by deliberately cycling on the wrong side of the road. Never seen cycle lights...

@@donmacdon my dashcams film what they see and I say what I think. It’s as simple as that. I’m not interested in preaching or pretending to have superior moral values or the authority to reeducate dimwits. Stupidity is stupidity.
