Hate a cyclist? Love a cyclist? When driving on the roads, you may come across one that makes you feel they are slowing you down and blocking the road. Here's how to approach and pass safely.

I have always tried to pass cyclists safely, giving plenty of room, per the highway code. I've NEVER had my overall journey time increased by being behind a cyclist. Even if you have to wait a minute or two for a safe spot, you'll still inevitably get caught up to the traffic ahead. So ultimately it's just a bit dumb to endanger someone's life, risk fines, points and potentially a prison sentence, to dangerously overtake.

Thing is that if you drive in a city, you lose a lot more time to car traffic than you do bikes, in fact you rarely gain anything from it at all! One less car on your that road, you are effectively one car length further forward in the queue at the next lights if you overtake. Driving in the country can be nice, having to slow down for a moment to wait on a safe opportunity to overtake is nothing, I'd do the same for a slow moving car, and you see a lot of those on weekends and holidays!
@5688gamble
@5688gamble Жыл бұрын
@@Professional_KZbin_Commenter Actually it wouldn't be true you lose 2 minutes anyway- that would be exceptional, national speed limit is 60MPH, a cyclist might be doing 15-20 on the flat, you'd just be making a third the progress for the duration, so you'd lose a lot less time than you'd think.

They were bunched 2-3 abreast & yes I then had to slow down & wait about 35 seconds until it was straight & clear to pass them. took me 3-5 seconds to pass them in a group. Then I continued back up to 50mph. Total time 45-50 seconds, which was nothing compared to the minutes spent sat at traffic lights 2 miles down the road. Imagine how harder it would be to pass all 15 strung out in a single line. Sometimes I'm a cyclist, other times I'm a motorist & occasionally I'm also a pedestrian. I just wait back a reasonable distance until it's safe and then overtake; it's not rocket science. Those bikes are used by people and they have as much a right to be on the road as I do. I've been in the car with people who suffer from 'must get in front syndrome' and they always look stressed which can't be a pleasant way to drive. Anyway, I leave them distance while I wait as I'm guessing having 1.5 tones of metal right behind you can be intimidating. Plus, my diesel estate can't sound the best either. Plus they are vulnerable and I don't want to have anything to do with them getting injured, like if they hit a spot of oil, their wheel gets caught in a crack in the road, or the like, and they fell over in front of my car...I ain't dealing with that! Full disclosure, I commute by to work on a bike so I mostly use on-road or protected bike paths so I'm really only at risk from cars if someone turns across me or if someone opens a door on my (neither are fun to be fair). However, I live near the mountains in Dublin and they are massively popular for bike use and I'm not sure I'd save more than a minute or two if I was a gowl and close passed or intimidated them into stopping. Also, I'm guessing it would be far more inconvenient for someone cycling up a hill to stop, lose all momentum and then restart; can't be good for the legs but I've never tried.

Most people used to do the same on motorways, these days they just sit in lane 3 when 1 and 2 are empty.

Sounds like the perfect time to be riding defensively if you feel it's legal & safe to pass on a narrow road and a blind hill. One of the cyclists could be your child, relative or partner. Slow down, leave earlier and relax. What's your hurry?

@papabits5721 Nobody "forces" you to pass on a blind hill; that is a decision YOU have made instead of waiting until it is safe to overtake properly. Don't blame other road-users for your own lack of ability and bad choices.

@@papabits5721 Who is the idiot here? I would say it's anyone who overtakes on a blind hill, as you hinted is what you do. Incidentally, it is legal for cyclists to ride two-abreast, but they are advised to ride in single file on busy or narrow roads. I have never seen cyclists riding three-abreast. Why should a cyclist move over for you? You don't have any more rights than them just because you drive a car. It's people like you who are the problem.
@Teapot-Dave
@Teapot-Dave 17 күн бұрын
@@papabits5721 Well you are the one who advocates overtaking on a blind hill, so who is the idiot here? If you bother to read The Highway Code, you will learn that it is actually legal for cyclists to ride two-abreast on the road, but I have never seen cyclists riding three-abreast. Just because you drive a car does not make you special, and does not mean that cyclists should have to pull-over for you so that you can get past. Impatient and intolerant drivers like you are the ones who cause the most problems on the road, not cyclists

Cyclists don't pay for the roads.
@blackcyclist
@blackcyclist Ай бұрын
we all pay for the roads through income tax & council tax. "Road Tax" was abolished in 1937. Roads are funded via central taxation which goes to the Highways Agency, whilst local councils maintain local roads, such as these where I live, which is of course funded via my council tax. Finally, I pay VAT at 20% on all my bikes. Tax tax tax. Thanks for watching 😀

Because they don't damage the road. Our tax is to repair and maintain the roads, which is heightened by traffic which isn't ever caused by cyclists. Such a stupid view. What I will agree on is that we do need to be able to identify cyclists so I'd like some license plate system

And 'road tax' as you call it is calculated by your vehicle's emissions. So I guess me and my electric car have less rights on the road too as I pay no vehicle excise duty (road tax) on that......
