When have you been offline for the last time? Did you choose yourself to be offline or was internet not working? To be offline seems more and more to become a choice that we see as a luxury. Is being offline the new luxury or is it still a luxury to be online for some people?
Digital networks are becoming denser and denser. We are online all the time everywhere and they are fewer places where we really can be alone. Where and when can we still disconnect? To be offline has become a luxury. Will we permanently use data or do we take back control over our connectivity? In this documentary we go on a journey to the edge of internet.
To be online all the time and everywhere. It sounds great, but it has its drawbacks. As digital networks are closing in, there are fewer places to be really on your own. Being offline is becoming a luxury. Where can you be offline?
We are connected to the internet even in our bedrooms. It’s the ambition of companies like Google and Facebook to connect the entire world, so that we can be online all the time and everywhere. Google has sent balloons up into the skies over Sri Lanka to provide the island state with free Wi-Fi for a month. On the ground, more and more devices communicate through the so-called Internet-of-Things. We are going to be ‘glass citizens’ in a transparent house, connected for life to a wireless intravenous drip and traced anywhere via our smartphones. What does it mean?
A small but growing group of people is saying goodbye to lifetime connectability. They are researching ways to keep control. What can we learn from them about life in the digital era? With: Paul Frissen (political scientist), Sherry Turkle (psychologist MIT), Evgeny Morozov (internet critic) and Birgitta Jonsdottir (hacker & founder Pirate Party)

You can be invisible by putting your phone down, and walking away. I did it by accident this last may. I left home without it, took a trip and no one knew where I was. I had contact numbers, but used land lines, then moved again afterwards. Just take your devices off your person and walk away. there you go.

'Is it also possible to live offline every day, no phone or internet, and still participate in society?' Well... we managed it okay for thousands of years... Aram is a kindred spirit. I no longer use a smart phone. I use the internet - mainly for entertainment and research - but no longer for social media. I used to get up every morning and spend my first hour checking emails, checking Facebook, checking in on forums. Now, I get up and sit quietly in the chair for an hour. I read more. I relish my time alone with my own thoughts, without constant distractions (and the attendant risks associated with continuous partial attention). I'm also a writer, and over recent years have found that the internet has encroached more and more on my creative time. It's become simply too easy to distract. So, I'm cutting it all down in order to allow my imagination some space once again.

I resent the fact I constantly have to remind people, my devises are there for my convenience... That they can contact me using any technology they choose, but that does not mean I am instantly receiving what is sent, nor am I immediately responding! In fact, my phone is usually left at home and rarely is it with me, within the home, i make very little use of it, in fact it’s a damn inconvenience. I have a life 👌🏼

If you choose to live offline (as opposed to just go on a vacation without wifi) the government here in Scandinavia will make your lige a living hell. Nobody here recieves any snail mail. Your are required by law to have not just email, but electronic mailbox maintained by the state. You will only receive mail here. Snail mail is history here. The fact that you no longer have a choice, proves that being online is way of social control, by the state, in cahoots with corporations who act as suppliers to the state. This is "surveillance capitalism" as expressed by Shoshana Zuboff. This is the wet dreams of Stasi and any other totalitarian stat.

Exactly. Same way not being able to be part of an economy (i.e. sustaining yourself) without a bank account, which inherently is a legal means of robbing you automatically of an X% of your income, with excuses like "admininstration/handling" cost, as if you care about anyone handling the income you worked for. Or raising your child the way you want to, healing yourself the way you want to, travelling without needing documents, etc.

I will take it abit further. Radio stations have to get their license renewed by the FCC every 3 years. When it comes up for renewal there is public comments entered into the record. So back in the 90s- I was ALWAYS commenting/complaining about the decline of radio. My premise is that music to not music ratio has deteriorated so much that the public is not served. Of course my comments were pooh poohed off. 2019- I dont even bother to turn the radio on. It is more pleasant to not have to be clobbered by not music- as a result I could not tell you what the top 40 was for the past 20 years. TV also abuses - so even when my brother offered to give me an expensive TV I declined. I simply dont watch it. ..but there is more. Billboards and logos. Everywhere there is corporate logos. Saturation. I am worth more than this. Farmers brand their cattle to prove ownership.... so why would I wear a logo and be property? Why should I give them free advertising?

I feel sorry for the youth today. Live away form digital, ya I did that all the time in the 70's. We went to school, did chores, ate dinner together, did homework. On weekends out with friends, rode bikes, camping, picnics, family gatherings, read books (everyone in my family loved to read), walked to town stores, played board games, watched some t.v. at night, went to bed. Rarely on the phone, always alone or interacting with family or friends. In my opinion was much better.

STOP SHOWING AMISH IN YOUR FILMS VPRO. I live in Indiana and I spent a solid year and nearly all my time with the Amish including dating a Amish boy and let me tell you they are NOTHING like you're claiming. They hide it from the "English", and certain other Amish. I literally was accepted by them bc I used LESS technology then they did, which to them made me not "English" but just Jasmine. EVERY Amish has a cellphone most the latest Iphone, which they say are strictly for work but of course it isn't. I used to literally hear their buggies coming from over a mile away thanks to the booming bass, of course they'd turn it off when going past other Amish homes as EVERY Amish family pretends to every other Amish family that they're faithful "Amish". They own cars, (I drove for them for ten years) and LOVE any car with a tv in it so they can watch tv on the way to work. They get around this by having drivers, and only owning vehicles, though I've caught them driving before too of course. EVERY Amish home also had some sort of game console, which surprisingly is MOST often played by the man of the house most I saw where around 60 and MOST had electricity. Saying they've disconnected when in reality bc they need ways to keep food fresh, and thus use freezers they don't actually unplug they just hide where it is, like one family, who hid plugs behind furniture, calenders, etc... I only got to see it bc I was a 16 at the time and was hanging out constantly something the adults were okay with purely bc of my willingness to jump in a help out at whatever was going on. I was so accepted that when weddings took place of my friends or funerals, I took part in the traditionally family only parts, like the three days before funeral when family shows up to help the family prepare OR in weddings it's the evening when guests leave so they can have a quiet meal. Normally Amish treat us english like the plague since they view us as a corrupting influence on their religion and souls, but as I was less corrupt then they were and NOT pushing my religion which was SDA. Thus I grew up without a TV, no internet, no non educational games, and NO cellphone until I bought one for myself. Therefore they didn't know what to do with me and frankly the ONLY way they get outside blood which they desparately need is IF a English girl marries a Amish man and goes Amish.

I loved the mobile phone when it first came out and I still do but only because I now have a chronic disease and I rely on the internet so much. But I look at my family and feel so sorry for them, they didn’t have the freedom I had growing up, the internet as taken away imagination. My daughter is a writer and she comes here to do her work because even though I use technology I only use it for my needs I turn everything off if she needs to work. My daughter as suggested we turn the WiFi off when we are not using it or when we sleep which would be a good idea, my daughter never sleeps with her phone in the bedroom she always leaves her phone in the lounge I have to have my phone close to me. Having said that congratulations for the excellent work and continue your effort to report and broadcast this subjects not only to have a larger audience but also to inform the public creating new situations to becbecomegreater public service not only adding recreation but transmit value and turning this in an constructive assertive and informative product different from your partners to be a channel separated and distanced from other and standing out in the form and content. congratulations from Portugal Oeiras Lisboa. Ps: this looks like a kind of publishing your product or a marketing service but it's not. I'm a foreign citizen that have been gladly surprised for a good product. Abraços João Cruz

The sad thing is I live in a world where people are now disconnected line I only watch KZbin cuz I don't want to real TV because regular TV only enhances and worships and I'd like famous people what famous athletes with you've never met I don't care to see those people... I also don't use Facebook Instagram any sites except KZbin that's the only thing I use so technically other than that I'm offline I don't even use emails... we need to get back to basics and most Simple Life..

I agree more with the guy who said it's how you use technology. And, it is neutral. It's basically a tool. We are the ones that choose to build something great to benefit us all or destroy ourselves with it. Also, proper legislation needs to be in place to protect privacy and keep crony capitalism from abusing it's power. I don't believe in the all or nothing approach. We should have safe, private, and non predatory tech available for everyone IF they choose to use it. I also think we might be apt to blame the technology when it's how we view each other ultimately as human beings and how we view the natural world is the most telling. Things can only change for the better when we really start evaluating what kind of society we want: Sky Net or Star Trek.

I've enjoyed this documentary so much. I'd love to live off grid however I am an artist and a creator.. I wish connectivity was more about jobs, childcare, food, nature, planting, education.... Which can be helped by the Internet.. The thing is, being overly concerned won't solve it.. Going down the same pathway.. The closing words were perfect We will learn to connect with more wisdom It just seems to me like creativity needs a better voice otherwise all conspiracies take our will away to live

Done, our home and property hold a policy of no cellular, wireless, cable, wi-fi etc. Our property is a luxury home on a paradise of animals and gardens. This year will be our 12th year anniversary. We indeed live a peaceful life in a sanctuary free of cellular and wireless.

I spent 40 years without invasive tech garbage. People got along fine without the internet and dumb phones. It's a marketed thing. When computers and internet became part of automobiles and appliances it was evident that corporations were the ones benefitting. People say that convenience is so desirable. I think people are becoming physically and mentally lazy and alienated from one another. It's very unhealthy at the end of it.

On one hand is the mental side of the receiver “users” however the technological side used to communicate such as cell phone and wireless devices can become a wave ozone on the composition of the closer space to earth, it is the condemnation of transported energy that should be measure. Regarding users minds indeed can be sensible to it, habits, persuasive methods of sending a message, habit also blends the user with the machine. Unexpected an illogical aftereffect are possible. Perhaps a kind of middle age with modern tools where the phone is a tool of need not of habit. Give a little jump to imagination. Industry and advertising survive on the habit of his customers. Banks finance industry’s and advertising, and media, weapons manufacturers to Eye Phones.
