It surprised me how open minded Larry King was despite his age. Just shows that even old people can change their minds :)

Less about age, and more about his profession over the past X amount of years. Weekly meeting with new personalities, learning about new perspectives... etc, etc. Social liberalism (Removed from fiscal politics) is something that comes from getting to know those perspectives and realizing your very narrow view of the world is but one lens... if you never see the world through anothers lens, you'll never know if your own lens is faulty... or just needs tweaking. His profession has always been about getting into the mind of the person he's interviewing.... if only social conservatives could all become talk show hosts.... maybe we'd get past this silly mid-century mindset of theirs. =( /politically divisive statement

That's what I've always loved about Larry. Like, he self admittedly doesn't understand somethings, and is there just to listen and to try to understand it. Like he means no disrespect by anything when he says something in the wrong way, from the other person's perspective it's just like "Oh, he doesn't know, he's just trying to figure it out, it's okay." Like when the guy said he doesn't like when people use "trans" as a noun, and you could just tell he didn't care that Larry said it, because he didn't know, and Larry would correct himself for now on.

@ Kimmy Nightngale IF you believe someone 'chooses' to be gay, or lesbian, or trans... Then you don't understand. We don't 'choose' to be like this any more than you choose your eye color. What we do eventually 'choose' is to be honest about who we are, who we think is sexy, and and who we love.

I like Larry, and i really enjoyed this debate, but every time he said 'is a trans' it made me cringe slightly, especially after the man in the middle suggested he found 'trans' used as a noun somewhat offensive.

he keeps doing it, i don't think he's conscience of it. he stopped saying "transgenders" but kept saying "a trans." I just don't think he made the connection with the other form on using it as a noun.

at 23:53 they had such a good educating opportunity to talk about the fact that there is a huge population of people that DO believe trans people genuinely CHOOSE to be trans, hence the term "deviants" a lot of cisgender trans/homophobic people use to demean and objectify people of these communities. good interview either way

I'm a transgender woman who " Passes" ( a term for some one who would not be immediately identifiable as trans) I know for a fact that there are many, many people throughout the day that do not for a second think of me as transgender. We are everywhere and I'm almost certain you've met at least one before and not known. But it can be a huge mind opening experience to see a person who is trans and you would never have known.

I'm glad you did this Larry King. I would add that gender isn't just "in your heart" and being one gender in your brain and seen as the opposite in your body is not at all like having "shoes that don't fit"... , it's actually in one's brain chemistry, it's been proven scientifically, and I think that people who are trans or not trans need to know this fact, it will if nothing else help people understand the issue. It's also not inconsequential as Laura Jane believes, most of us do not feel that way. it's hugely consequential in our lives and those of our families and friends. To US, we have lived with ourselves our whole lives and so it may seem rather inconsequential sometimes since we know who we are inside and always have (usually, I knew when I was a tiny kid) but to go ahead and make the bodily transition IS huge and to those around us who may not have known how we felt, it's even more of a change for them to get used to. Just my thoughts!
@siginotmylastname39696 жыл бұрын
Kim Dogluv trying to give biological proof for trans people always plays into more conservative ideas. It's very binary how they try to "prove" trans people are who they say they are, and gender based arguments about brain chemistry can also play into problems with mental health care, with the misdiagnosis of women or men with some mental illnesses being explained away by saying the brain chemistry of them is different and that there's a gender bias in that particular illness. But yeah. It ignores the massive variation between trans people, including non binary people.

Watching this again I suspect religion has a lot to do with the refusal or inability to accept that there is a very wide spectrum when talking about gender identity. The fact that most, if not all, know from a very young age that something's amiss externally, tells me that this is yet another piece of the rainbow that some choose not to see. It irritates me when people say :it's a choice therefore the cost of surgeries should not be borne by the taxpayer. I disagree vehemently that it's a choice to put oneself through the pain and suffering that inevitably occurs psychologically, or the same after having the various necessary surgeries, to bring oneself into alignment with one's mind/soul. The happiness, contentment and ability to be a wholly contributing person in one's life ...priceless.

I do feel that the LGBT community has high expectations of the average person. If it can take years for an individual to come to grips with who they truly are, the same can be said for how long it will take for others to understand. It's not as black & white as it is made out to be. We are so much further ahead than ever on the understanding, education and acceptance of our Trans community but as with anything related to "currently not of the norm", positive education is needed. I have hope that one day no one will blink an eye.

If you own your own business, its your prerogative to hire whoever the hell, and fire whoever the hell you want. What is the bullshit about government trying to stop people from running their own lives how they want? You have absolutely no obligation to hire someone you don't want to hire in your own personal business.
@diesel43849 жыл бұрын
***** That is true, but you still ought to be do it if you want to. If you are running your own private business and your firing someone because their black and then hiring inferior candidates due to your racism, all it will do it hurt your corporate profits, and the intelligent business owner down the street is going to hire them. Government should not be telling people who they can and cannot hire in their own personal businesses.
@diesel43849 жыл бұрын
***** You haven't actually made any valid counter argument. In case you don't know about economics, that is how a free market works. Perhaps you would like to live in nanny communist state where government controls all of market and trade and where individuals don't have any rights?
@diesel43849 жыл бұрын
***** You have missed the point. I have already explained how the free market makes unprofitable to not hire or fire people due to the prejudice of the employer instead of merit. The government is not there to protect people from themselves. I have absolutely no obligation to hire someone in my private business if I don't want to. You also ought to be able to fire someone from your private business for whatever reason you want to. That is called freedom. Its not a human right to be employed by somebody, its an earned privilege. Also your assumption about there being no correlation between race and sexuality etc. and work performance is erroneous. You explained the problem quite well yourself. If you are a Hooters employer who hires only men and ugly transexuals, (lets assume government outlaws all discrimination) then no one will visit for your services and you will go out of business. I don't know about you, but personally I do not want to live in a world where I cannot run my own private business how I want to on my own terms, without the government telling me how I should and shouldn't run it (as if i am too stupid to think for myself, and need to be protected from my own stupidity). If i run it poorly then i will fail and it will be my own problem, no one else's. Not the government, not the tax payer. The alternative, as I have already explained, is a nanny state (socialist or communist), where individuals do not have rights and the government controls all market and trade. Obviously anyone who vouches for such a system has learned nothing from history.
@diesel43849 жыл бұрын
***** Again you completely missed the point, and have not even read that I said. Its your kind of attitude why your freedoms are being disintegrated and the greatness of the United States is being diluted by an oversized government. Its not that I want to discriminate, its just that you ought be able to do so, just on principle in a country of freedom. Any rational person would not refuse service to someone because of prejudice, because it would hurt their profits and they would loose money. But it is your prerogative as a business owner to refuse service if you want to. As you so eloquently put it yourself, if they don't like it _' they can fucking leave'_ and find another store to shop in.
@diesel43849 жыл бұрын
***** The role of the US government government, as written in the constitution, is to protect the rights of the individual to their lives, property and freedoms. So long as you are not violating the freedoms or rights of others you ought to be able to live your life as you please. Murder is illegal because it violates the individual rights of people to their lives. The US was the greatest nation on earth up until the government got involved and started consistently violating the constitution around 60 years ago. Now government is overly big, over regulates everything, is destroying the economy with the federal reserve, subsidisation and their minimum wage laws, and is constantly changing the constitution. You do not build great nations on government ruling peoples personal lives, as if they know better than them. If you want to see the result of your beautiful equality and social justice, have a look at Russia in 1951. Everyone was equally poor and equally oppressed, except for government workers, who were more equal than everyone else. People don't learn from history and keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. They will not realise until a military boot comes crashing down on them and all of their personal freedoms are lost and they are sent off to gulags to do forced labour.
