Here's the difference between the 2. Beirut was a suicide bombing that happened in a couple of seconds. Benghazi was a sustained fire fight that happened over 6 hours. Beirut, peacekeepers were sent in after the embassy said there were possible threats. Benghazi, the embassy forces were depleted even while Ambassador Stevens was begging the State Department for help.

We were nervous about going over ther. But after the bombing, we were ready to get even and kick ass. !st Battalion, 22 MAU, 2nd Mar Div forever. SEMPER FIDELIS!!!

The real reason why it happend: Col. Timothy J. Geraghty, Commander, Marines in Beirut during the incident, said that "The Marine headquarters were targeted because the US provided direct naval gunfire support -- which I strongly opposed for a week -- to the Lebanese Army at a mountain village called Suq-al-Garb on September 19. American support removed any lingering doubts of our neutrality, and I stated to my staff at the time that we were going to pay in blood for this decision. The End
