INTRODUCING FUTURE STEPS
The Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra 2014 plays primarily original music written by Fritz Renold in the style of the acclaimed Jazz-fusion band Steps Ahead first known as ‘Steps’ in the early 1980′s. The production also showcases several of ‘Steps Ahead’s’ initiator and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri’s compositions from the old recordings now set in a jazz orchestra formation.
Directing the ensemble is Fritz Renold, Jazzaar Festival’s music director.
The Future Steps production presents the wonders of young talents working closely with professionals, some of whom were actual members of ‘Steps Ahead’ (‘Steps’). By so doing the young musicians were handed down a legacy and a musical heritage, raising their own levels of musicality and proficiency in the process.
The tunes were written by Fritz Renold and Mike Mainieri while arranged and orchestrated for the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra by prolific writers such as Gil Goldstein, Christian Jacob, Jamshied Sharifi, Fritz Renold, Corey Allen and Bob Freedman.
Future Steps is a ‘Bandstand Learning with Role Models’ production premiered at Jazzaar Festival, Aarau, Switzerland.

Kudos to Felix Piringer!!! Not easy to walk in Michael Brecker's shoes. He makes it seem like he's lifting the whole band up off the stage when he gets his EWI solo going. Love Mike Manieri's solo on this as well. So much feel and elegance. Bravo to the whole orchestra! Well done!

Ce jeune saxophoniste honore Michael Brecker, il interprète comme un fou et avec fougue quelque chose qui ne lui appartient pas et ça c'est formidable il s'est approprié ce moment de pur bonheur, je l'en remercie et le félicite pour son art et sa profonde musicalité, car reproduire est une chose mais reproduire en étant soi même c'est très fort, c'est trop fort. @@crisak333 J'étais en train d'écouter ce merveilleux titre d'un très bon album des Steps Ahead quand j'ai eu envie de le voir en live : quelle belle surprise de tomber sur cette interprétation qui ne souffre d'aucune approximation et ce jeune saxophoniste, Felix Piringer, tout à fait à la hauteur de la rude tâche à performer. Le bonheur se lisait dans son sourire après son solo. Merci au public et à ses équipiers de lui avoir fait honneur par applaudissements. GÉ-NIAL !... Et merci au SWISS YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA. Ma journée est faite !...

Great arrangement and playing! I love to see this amazing composition, from an era sometimes frowned upon by some "purists", in a big band context. Wow, an EWI in the section, Michael would be proud! Nice tribute. And Randy! too bad he didn't take a solo. And thanks to the credits i 've just discovered that the tune is credited to all the band of 1986 Steps Ahead, Mainieri, Brecker, Loeb, Erskine, Bailey. I thought it was Maineri only.
