I excursed to Minsk in 2019. The people were friendly, streets were lively, shelves were full, and all attractions were impressive and fervent. There was nothing imperfect of the country; it felt nostalgic. The air was clean, forests were sprawling, and children swam in lakes whilst vendors amassed customers. There had been no instance of any political instability - the capital was pleased, gregarious, and an exceptional visit. I do not see any of this facile, heavily-worded documentary as true, for I was there myself.

@@pman56789 My mother lived within the country for 40 years during and after the Soviet regime and under Lukashenko. My grandmother has lived in Minsk her whole life, remembering the day Stalin died, and has expressed nothing but satisfaction and pride for her country. I have family reaching across nearly every modern oblast that has not exhibited a stray hopeless feeling, and have aimed for growth and greatness during the darkest hours of eastern Europe and Belarus during the 20th century. My mother now frequently visits with little difficulty. I assure you, although you would not be incorrect to assume that I might be ignorant alone, I have two living generations with oral knowledge far predating the revolution that refutes your assertion. Of course, I am not commending Stalin, I am not pushing aside his atrocities and many to come, and I am not saying that the country is perfect, but you know nothing of modern Belarus.

Just take the statement "Better a dictator than gay", some people either bash dictators or gays, this statement shows the problem though, the guy replies with something irrelevant to piss people off. It's not a free country, there is huge amounts of problem in the economy regarding "free market", in case you didn't notice Belarus is centralized and still flying under Soviet Belorussian flag. To all this people questioning this video: what the hell? Have you even been in Belarus? I live in Minsk. Some parts of this short documentary are a bit exaggerated but in general it's pretty close. After 2010 elections 600+ people were detained, a lot of people were beaten up (including journalists and even undercover cops in the crowd), SEVEN out of 9 candidates were imprisoned, two got pretty seriously bitten by the police, and one is still in prison. And the lack of freedom of speech is not the worst thing. Economy has to be free. If you try to manipulate it, it'll bite you. If you live in a developed country you can't even imagine 15% annual inflation and 40-50% loan rates. People literally loose their money cause of this almost every 2-3 years. Imagine living in constant fear of loosing all your earnings and you'll understand how most of people live here. And now we've entered recession cause Russia can't provide us with easy credit money anymore. Next elections are in October but there's no hope for any change.

Why did the reporter talk about "gay rights", that most people in Eastern Europe think are an abomination. Why did he talk about "shooting criminals in the back of the head".. Does anyone care a murderer might be executed? Instead of spending his entire life living of taxpayers in a cell?

Putin and Lukashenko are similar but also different. Putin kept the emblems of czarist Russia and did not reverse to the symbols of the Soviet-Union. Lukashenko knew he could not use communist symbols, as his republic is not in any way socialist. He choose to reuse the Soviet banner of Belarus but win-out the hammer and sickle. The state emblem is almost identical to that used during Stalinist times, only the hammer and sickle is missing. This is how Alexander Lukashenko plays it. He is not a communist, but he plays on Soviet nostalgia. Belarus has a market economy with a lot of state regulations. They are led by a man who loves the old USSR, but does not want its people to become revolutionary socialists. Because Lukashenko is a dictator and like Putin, a enemy of the working class! However I must criticize the way Channel 4 News is reporting on this story. They compare the current KGB of Belarus to the Cheka of 1917. Felix Dzerzhinsky cannot be compared to Alexander Lukashenko. Both men lived 100 years apart and in different times. Also the Cheka was created to protect the rule of the soviets, at a time when the White Terror murdered revolutionaries by the thousands in Russia, Finland, Hungary and Germany. Sure innocents were killed by Felix Dzerzhinsky, but innocents were also killed by Winston Churchill when he ordered 40.000 British troops to support the anticommunist; White Armies. Just look to Azerbaijan were nationalist forces under British supervision murdered 26 Soviet leaders. This murder of democratic elected soviet leaders by anticommunists is why Felix Dzerzhinsky was so brutal. His Cheka is not to be compared to Stalin's NKVD and later KGB. Felix Dzerzhinsky would hate Alexander Lukashenko for his elitism. Channel 4 News however cannot see the difference, as they are led by capitalists who intentional equal Lenin with Stalin and Felix Dzerzhinsky with Alexander Lukashenko! Also I did not hear Channel 4 News objection to the 2008 Olympics in Bejing or in any other sports game in a dictatorship. No, they attack Belarus because Lukashenko is anti-western. If he was a pro-western dictator like the president of Uzbekistan then we would never hear such a negative story. This is how biased the western media is. They reject anti-western dictatorships, but remain silent about pro-western dictatorial governments of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and the regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq ( products of western imperialism )!!

The country itself is wonderful and I'm personally proud of it, however the political system and vast censorship is ridiculous. No gay rights, cruel, evil-minded Lukashenko supported by delusional groups of people. We should also remember that a lot of people supported Stalin and truly loved him, demonstrated much by the vast grief over his death. I know, my father, cousins lived there for almost all their lives, Belarus is in a downward spiral and had been so for a long time. International rights - very true. People I know are unable to travel to travel to some of the countries within the EU region and the diplomatic relationships are very poor. Belarus economy also relied upon Russia and without Putin I'm pretty sure dictatorship would've fallen apart years ago and it would've truly become a democracy-ruled country. Currently however, if you reside within that region, I'd recommend migrating.

Some comparisons from Vietnam: * Belarus is so similar to Vietnam. Belarus is considered an totalitarian country living next to and depending on a bigger totalitarian neighbor (Russia and China). Things which happen in these countries are not only domestic issues, but also concerns of their "big brothers". * Economic development: So far, both Belarus and Vietnam have strong growth (from the low standards compared to their neighbors). But the economic reliance on their undemocratic Russia and China could reduce long-term development. Overall, Belarus's economy is more developed than that of Vietnam. * In Vietnam, gay rights are not (yet) openly supported by the government, but not publicly oppressed. Here in Vietnam, I have not seen any government official saying stupid stuff like "being a dictator is better than being gay".

After spending almost 4 years of my student life in London I was back home and couple of weeks later my X invited me for her birthday and farewell because she was also graduated and going back home so I got my passport with my valid student visa and went back to London to say good bye to my X and they didn't let me in because I had a student visa not a "touristic one" so I spent a day in the prison in the Heathrow Airport and another day in the prison in the Istanbul Ataturk Airport because Turkish authorities couldn't believe that for something that simple such as instead of having a touristic visa I had a student one so they wanted to double check and make sure if there is anything else wrong with me! So after almost 4 years spending all that time in Britain and spending all that money for schools, live etc. I was refused to enter the country just because of wrong visa type so couldn't say one last good bye to my love and plus spent 2 day in prison for nothing I did wrong and just for the records I didn't have any criminal even the tiny one record and I am almost 50 now and I still have not got any! So, assholes are always assholes or if the issue is British ones maybe I should say arseholes so country doesn't matter...wankas...

What a racist and ignorant comment. First of all, that's a distinct Italian accent. Secondly, if they hold Swiss citizenship but are originally from another country, they're still Swiss.
