The Pokedex entries are not in order of when/where they were discovered, they're in order of when the protagonists, who were tasked with filling out the dex to begin with, found the Pokemon. Other guides may be in different orders, I'm sure many books or websites in the Pokemon world organize them by native region. Also, the reason sudowoodo is so rare in Johto is actually because they are native, and therefore better resemble a type of tree that exists there, meaning they are just really good at blending in.

@coryemorrell5 жыл бұрын
Hunter Miller I would argue that it’s not the protagonists who found the Pokémon, but the professors of those regions. The professors are the ones who first “discovered’ the individual species in their regions. This is how they are able to confirm whether or not you’ve “completed” your Pokédex because they know all of the Pokémon in the region. The protagonists’ role would just be to collect additional information for the professor. This can be why the Pokédexes are inaccurate in regards to the what regions they’re native to and most prevalent because they weren’t documented there.

With the Johto baby Pokémon, maybe Johto is simply a nesting ground for many Kanto Pokémon, and they migrate to their Kanto habitats upon evolution.
@madMosher0235 жыл бұрын
There are many Pokemon that should be retroactively changed between regions. For example, Slowpoke is not a Pokemon that originally came from Kanto. It has it's origins in the Slowpoke Well in Johto and later moved. Conversely, a Johto Pokemon that should be in Kanto is Slugma. It's a Pokemon introduced in Johto, but can only be found in Kanto at the cycling road. It's easy to make these judgments between Johto and Kanto because they are shared in single games. It's harder to make such statements about Pokemon origins in other regions unless stated like Exeggutor. I also don't think rare Pokemon is an indication of a Pokemon not belonging to a region, because of Safari Zone Pokemon. With the exception of Exeggcute and Exeggutor in Kanto, I believe Safari Zone Pokemon are all native to that region the Safari Zone is in but are in conservation as endangered species, and, where in some regions, Safari Zone Pokemon are more easily encountered in other regions, I believe that they have been introduced to those habitats that will allow them to thrive naturally similar to real world conservation programs. As far as Pokedex numbering goes, I believe that scientists are looking to catalogue all species, and Trainers are a good vector for that. The research began with Oak, so Kanto would obviously take precedent in that listing region to region, and each successive region is listed in order of participation. As for which species are listed first, more commonly found Pokemon are listed early in each region leading to rarer Pokemon listed towards the end. Data on every Pokemon already exists for obvious reasons of living for millenia with them, but the purpose of the Pokedex is to record observations in their natural habitat, so that explains how Pokemon that are hatched like Baby Pokemon, or Pokemon that evolve in special ways can be listed separately in different regions because that's when they're observed in nature. By the time we get those Pokemon, the data will have already been provided to the Professors by other people. What we do provide is insight into is Legendary Pokemon, usually the first to see them in centuries. I wouldn't think there would be any "true" way to list the national dex, but I do think that regional dexes should be changed in future games that go back to older regions to reflect what we've learnt over the years. As far as Pokemon coming from other regions than we think, the Safari Zone Pokemon are a great place to start.
@spectremudd5 жыл бұрын
This comment deserves way more likes. I literally had the same theory about already having data of all pokemon, that's why when ash pulls out his pokedex it already knows what the pokemon is, and when you check your pokedex it has small information about look and cry of the pokemon but theres a whole other page for habitat, maybe you're mapping where they live in terms if climate in that region

It seems very clear to me that Let's Go is not canon to the main series entries and so should not be considered here. With that in mind, many Safari Zone Pokemon would have been imported from other regions: Scyther (Sinnoh) Kangaskhan (Unova) Tauros (Johto) Dratini & Dragonair (Johto) Porygon is still native to Kanto, having been created at Silph Co. Exeggcute & Exeggutor were imported from Alola. Tyrogue and/or its evolved forms were likely imported from Sinnoh.

Interesting video concept, I'd say the one sticking point I have that I would argue over is Castform. It was literally made in a lab in Hoenn, so any Castform appearing in regions outside Hoenn were either from Hoenn mass producing them and releasing them into other environments or it was the result of Castform being taken to other regions and then breeding with indigenous life in that region. At that point, Castform is an invasive species rather than native to other regions.

I came down here with just a dumb video idea: Why do certain regions have/get certain pokeballs? One is pretty easy, Johto, special pokeballs there are from Kurt crafting them from local flora. And he was able using them to make ones that are useful (less so in original games) to the player. But I wonder if there's any lore or clear reason why other pokeballs appear in other regions or their cost/rarity. Also I was just glancing through comments here and was super surprised (and happy) at a lot of awesome responses that could turn this into maybe a multi-part series. There's some cool ideas about safari zone and legends of other origins or migration patterns, etc. . .

The way i've always seen the Pokedex is not that these pokemon originate here, but rather "These pokemon have been found in the region". It's silly that way, but so is every other. Gen 2 has a town that formed around a colony of these dragons. Gens 2, 4, 5, 6(fishing only) and 7 (lets go is fishing only, sun/moon are not) are all more likely points of origin for these pokemon that have global migration patterns. At least gens 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 have land-based roosts rather than oceanic roosts tauros is in the routes closest to the safari zone in lets go, npc's mentioned that safari zone has both endangered and imported pokemon back in gen 1. Tauros does not have its female counterpart anywhere within kanto so aside from dittos and importing there is no way to renew the herd count. If miltank were added in lets go there could be an argument for them being local rather than imported, but... kangaskhan it is local as of lets go, so it is likely one of the endangered pokemon placed in the safari zone, but it might have been an imported species in gen 1 that has since flourished in rock cave.

Kangaskahn and Cubone/Marowak most likely originate from Alola. They appear together in the wild in Alola, and the PokéDex states that their main natural predator are Mandibuzz, who are also found in Alola. On the contrary, other regions only find these Pokémon in small numbers in caves, or in the Safari Zone, and Mandibuzz only exist in Unova outside of Alola, where there's no actual Kangaskahn or Cubone population. Cubone in Kanto are also said to exist through unnatural means, due to humans hunting and killing their mothers, instead of the Mandibuzz that would hunt them in their actual natural habitat. So as such, I conclude that both the Cubone, Kangaskahn and Vullaby lines must have a natural habitat in Alola, as opposed to the industrialized regions of Kanto or Unova. Glad you made a topic on this Toby, its one of my favorite things to think about in regards to the habitats and Regional variety of Pokémon.

A few issues with these ideas, largely in regards to Cubone existing by unnatural means in Kanto. Cubone can be male or female, they can reproduce naturally within the caves they're found in. They may be surviving by unnatural means, like human protection. I'm not recalling anything that mentioned they are living unnaturally, though. As for Cubone natively appearing as an Alolan Pokemon If we assume in-game lore to be true, then we have to assume that Cubone is natively from Kanto. Just like Sandshrew, Meowth and Rattata, it's stated that these Pokemon migrated or were brought to the islands. Mandibuzz is part of a generation of Pokemon intended to be almost entirely removed from the previous regions, if anything Mandibuzz may have been brought to Alola. But, it seems very unlikely that's their point of origin. I could maybe see a case where they might've existed in both, natively, being part of the "American" regions within the Pokemon games.

Nice video idea. However, you should not have assumed that Pokedex regions were ever about where each Pokemon is originally from or most common. This was never suggested by any gameplay. I think I was right to always assume that the region a Pokemon is _first discovered in_ matters. After Oak invented the Pokedex, he let other Profs fill in Pokemon in a first come first served order. Take Professor Birch's research in ORAS. He says that climate change due to Kyogre and Groudon returned Hoenn's climate to what it was years ago, leading to Pokemon like Braviary migrating back to Hoenn. Braviary is a rare Pokemon "from Unova," but it was also in Hoenn years ago but migrated. Professor Juniper must have been the first to register Braviary since Oak invented the dex and allowed colleagues to fill it. Birch simply was the first to register Beldum. Beldum never _had to be from Hoenn_ so it should not be called a "mistake." Sudowoodu was first registered by Elm, as were baby Pokemon. Elm actually _discovered_ Pichu too. The Pokemon timeline helps to imagine this. Oak registers Electabuzz. Three years later, Elm registers Elekid and Rowan registers Electivire. It is likely that they personally discovered the breeding/trading requirements for them. Overall, I think each region gets a "head start" based on the experience and age of their Professor. The Profs each gen are getting younger on average, explaining why Pokemon common in their own regions are already discovered by older Profs despite rarity.

You're not wrong about the fossils. Either the developers forgot or they just didn't plan this far to have certain Pokemon remain exclusive to certain regions. Remember Pokemon was supposed to end at Gold and Silver but the franchise continued on due to its popularity worldwide.

I know this video's a couple years old at this point, but while watching it, I had a great idea for a theory about Rotom. I hope you see this comment Toby. You made the comment on how Rotom appears to be becoming more common over time, and it got me thinking about the anime and the games. In Galar, we see Rotom drones on the battlefield filming the gym battles, and they're used similarly in the Journeys anime as AI officiators (except they aren't AI, they're sentient Pokemon). Then that got me thinking about an episode in the Alola anime about how the Dex Rotom got kicked out of his body and was hilariously replaced by a Rotom trained to be a washing machine. Dex Rotom explored household appliances throughout the episode, alluding to the forms in the games. Then it hit me that we never see Rotom used as a battler in the anime, only as the Pokemon World's equivalent of helper robots. But they are Pokemon, right? Rotom Dex definitely has personality. But the Rotom trained to be a washing machine, while in the Dex body, appeared to be less intelligent. To go further on this, the drone Rotoms act robotically, similarly to the Rotom phones also seen in Journeys. Team Rocket's Rotom phone is sassy and lazy by comparison because they could only afford a "knock-off". These Rotom are clearly being mass-produced and programmed by someone before they're shipped out to be used as appliances. It's kinda dark when you think about it. Plus, we don't even know who's doing it...

In the show Prof. Oak had help from Prof. Westwood who went around writing the entries on the Pokémon he personally came across for the dex, so the entries would have been written out of order if they came across the second or third evo first. A species could also have migrated or been introduced into another region, I’m sure there are a lot of invasive Pokémon with the amount of traveling trainers there are.

I think a lot of synthetic/baby pokemon are more common in later regions because of the timeline. Beldum, castform, and the babies of Johto were first discovered/created/breed in their regional dex regions and then as time went on they became more common.

Also all the Pokémon that can only be found in Safari Zones. One of the best examples is Scyther. You can only find it in the Kanto Safari Zone in Gen I and during the Bug Catching Contest in Johto. Given that they are only avialable on specific days of the week during that one event leads me to believe that they are released into the wild as long as the contest is held and retreived once it ends. They are nowhere to be seen on Hoenn but they are avialable in the wild in Sinnoh, in the post-game's Route 229. They are made much more common in Platimun as apparently they migrated South due to the colder climate of that game and can be found at Routes 210 and 215.

I've thought about this before and have come up with some that aren't in this video. One that came to my mind was the Meditite line. Meditite and Medicham can be found in two locations in Hoenn with a pretty low encounter rate. They also aren't used that much by trainers in the region. However, in Sinnoh, Meditite and Medicham are very common sights on ragged routes, mountainous locales, and caves throughout the Region. Whether this (lore wise, not counting gameplay reasons) is just circumstance that they ended up adapting better to the rugged environment or that they were native there to begin with, it is interesting to see such a rare Pokemon be so normal elsewhere, especially in just the next Gen.

Honestly, I think National Pokedex is only for the viewers (of the anime) and the players (of the games). Instead, each region has it's own Pokedex and Kanto should technically have a refresh with some things being considered a retcon. For instance, Johto and Kanto should have a combined Pokedex instead with the gen 3 & 4 baby/evolutions being added to the dex. A KanJo Dex. And since Beldum is in the Hoenn Pokedex, we can assume that the only reason we don't see it is because of game play and not cause it doesn't exist in the wild.

The Pokedex is based vaguely on the order Pokemon were input by Professor Oak's research. The different regions were researched and input into the national dex at different times, which is why it starts with Kanto, then Johto etc. Pokemon that are more common in other regions or brought from other regions were registered first in certain regions, which is why they appear at those places of the dex.

I have to say, with the different timelines should be what effects what Pokémon are native. If you think about it, in both the Mega and the Non-Mega timeline Kanto has the Safari Zone. All of the Pokémon found in the Safari Zone are not supposed to be native to Kanto (for the most part). I think Let’s Go should just be its own timeline, especially if they introduce more Let’s Go games. I do agree a lot of Pokémon become more accessible as generations progress. That’s only to allow players to compete a full dex within one generation. Keep in mind one full generation consists of multiple games. I really think this was more of a fast video for your job than a thought out one, which I can understand . I do like the idea of making a list of Pokémon who do not belong in their respective regions their first dex entries are from. Now before anyone says “In gen 2 when you go back to Kanto you can catch the Pokémon who were originally in the Safari Zone out in the wild.” The Safari Zone was destroyed sometime between the events of Gen 1 and Gen 2.

I think its through discovery, because in kanto you only give one kind of pokemon at a time, and other regions allow more than one, thus meaning a egg, and the electrizer for example was most likely discovered/developed (a great theory would be humans forcing evolution through certain items such as magmortar and dubious disc) in sinnoh

What I find interesting is the small handful of pokemon that aren't really considered "rare" but are only really found naturally in a single region. For example, Shuppet is only found on Mt. Pyre in Hoenn and to my knowledge thus far is nowhere else normally as a wild pokemon.

This is subject that I was very concern since months ago.. In Beldum case, it's true, it isn't from Hoenn but it is from Sinnoh. It can explain by the fact that Steven has a Villa and the zone where Beldum is found is very close to it, so we can say that Steven was in his Villa chilling and he found this weird Pokemon and catch it, he breed one and the baby is the one he gives to the player. Yes, it can be found in Alola, I don't know if it is from space like the case of Minior and Clefairy (?) like you said but maybe the thing is that it fall in Alola and Sinnoh (that little grassy area only accesible by surfing -suspicious-). Mr. Mime is another case, in Kanto it can be only found via trading, but in Jhoto it can be found wild, so we can say that Mr. Mime and Mime Jr are from Johto and not Kanto and the one that we got in Kanto is from Johto, that is the same case of Jynx and Farfetch'd which are found in the Sevii Island and Johto and via trade in Kanto (of course Mr. Mime, Jynx and Farfertch'd are in other regions too but this is the Kanto situation lol). There's a lot more to think...

This is something I've been thinking about off and on for years now. You can't even catch a Murkrow in Johto, you have to wait until you get to Kanto to get one. This applies to Slugma as well. I've actually been doing a little research as to what region Murkrow could originally be from, but with them still releasing regions it's hard to come to a conclusion.

Video idea: Somewhat of an add on to this videos idea, but cover all the pokemon that are native to which region. Throw out the pokedex completely (pokedex doesn't do care for which species are native or not). For example, Exeggcute and Exeggutor aren't native to Kanto. They stay in the safari zone with other non-native pokemon, and Exeggutor ended up adapting to Kanto's climate over time. And then make note of which pokemon humans brought to other regions, Like Ratatta being brought to Alola and spreading and adapting.

My personal theory was always that due to the communication of the professors, Pokemon League and Dex holders certain Pokemon were found/discovered at different era's however just like orange islands with the pink Pokemon and Alolan it took time to learn and actually identify them as same or different species.

I have a theory that Eevee is originally from the Kalos region or a region introduce post black and white. Kalos was the second region where you could find a wild eevee. Kanto it's gifted to you by some stranger on top of a building, Johto bill hands you an eevee, you can't find one in Hoenn, in sinnoh the only way to get an Eevee is from the girl who runs the PC system, then it's not found anywhere in the Unova region until 3 years have passed from black and white which gives more than enough time for trainers with eevees from other regions to have brought them to Unova and released them because of Team Plasma. Alola can be explained with eevees from another region being brought over to this region like Ratatta and Ratacate. I haven't gotten around to adding Galar into this with Sword and shield being released after I came up with this idea.

An aspect to this I don't believe you mentioned (if you did, I missed it) is the time difference. Yeah Sudowoodo is more common in Alola but Silver/Crystal/Gold is set 17 years before Sun/Moon/Ultras so in that 17 years, Sudowoodo could have migrated or been introduced to Alola as, maybe Johto was harming its chances for survival and they thought it might fair better in the tropics.
@JoshawottNerdsOut5 жыл бұрын
Regarding Electabuzz, I wonder if maybe it was imported to Kanto? Its original location (Power Plant) is man -made, so it could have been brought to Kanto for that. In GSC it can be found in the grass outside, which can be attributed to it previously being imported, but it only appears in the natural wild in Sinnoh, Kalos* and Alola (*if we count the Friend Safari). Magmar is interestingly, also found in man-made locations in all regions except the Sevii Islands, Alola, and Mt. Silver. That remains true as of LGPE too. With regards to Togepi, the first time we were able to actually catch them in the wild was Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos' Friend Safari. Given Togekiss' discovery in Sinnoh and the weird natures of White Forest and Friend Safari, I'd suggest Togepi may be Sinnoh native? I'd also question why Murkrow and Houndour are listed as Johto, when they were first found in Kanto. Being available in HGSS' Safari Zone doesn't really retcon that either, as they're typically there to showcase exotic Pokémon.

Theory! When you play Pokémon, you play the memory of the original character (think assassins creed style). In gen one for example, there are so many parts of the game that you can see but are unable to visit. I attribute this to, when Red ran his journey, he simply never visited these areas, thus off limits for your player. This would explain Lance, and others, having illegal Pokémon. There are areas where low leveled dragonite are available, or trainers are able to evolve Pokémon at levels different that your player because of the way they had trained their teams. The Pokémon the main player has at level learned moves and evolutions is based on the characters original journey. Would also explain trainers who have Pokémon well passed the levels we are used for them to evolve. Those trainers weren’t good enough to evolve at your characters level.

Here's an interesting thing to consider. Houndour and Slugma can't actually be found in Johto. They are from Gold and Silver, but can only be found in Kanto. I've personally taken this as a way of seeing Houndour and Houndoom as Kanto Pokemon. And Slugma, despite showing up in Kanto, has always struck me as being a Hoenn Mon. No other research done on this situation, but could get the research started. And I actually plan on doing this for my version of the Master Dex Challenge, potentially with other Pokemon like you mentioned as well, catching them in their home regions instead of their Dex Region. Also, Corsola isn't a Johto Pokemon. The Pokedex says it came from a southern region. Maybe this is the Sevii Island, maybe it's Galar, maybe it's an all new region not yet discovered? We can't know yet.

Houndour, despite being introduced in Generation 2, can't be found in the Johto Region, not even in HGSS. You have to go to Kanto to find one. An interesting one is Corsola, which is common in Johto, but is specifically from Hoenn. All it's Pokedex Entries say it comes from a Southern Region with the exception of Alola, which says: "The pink of Corsola that live in Alola is deep and vibrant, thanks to seas filled with nutrition"

I'd say Togepi is from the sinnoh region. They live in the (resort area?) wild grass and that's even where you discover their final evolutions. Sure it is a baby Pokémon (it can't breed) but it's only a gift Pokémon in Johto.

I feel like Pokedex additions are more of a catalog of time passing with environments than it is necessarily 'this Pokemon is native first and foremost to this place', in combination with your player character being a "new" person in every game. Like, I imagine Electivire was first discovered in Sinnoh and immediately added to the pokedex where it had lived because that information was now public (stares hard at Let's Go degression). Of course, since you're playing Lucas/Dawn in this point of time when Electivire was discovered, then you only have their perspective in that region for the discovery, not, say, Red's perspective in Kanto at that time.

Here are my two cents: First of all we have to think of the real world game mechanics and lore-wise. We've in theory SHOULD evolve into Espeon with Sun Stone, Umbreon with Dusk Stone and Leafeon with Leaf Stone, Glaceon with a newly introduced stone. Tauros and Miltank are clearly counterparts yet Miltank hasn't been fixed to give Tauros eggs the same way Illumise can give Volbeat eggs sometimes. There should be more Dawn Stone evolutions..... also why does Vulpix and Execute need to evolve with stones? They're arguably also "baby Pokémon". Also why the F*** does Poliwhirl need a foreign object to become something a tadpole should naturally become which is a frog? It's nature! That should be changed to evolve naturally. Back to the dexes, I personally think Kanto and Johto are just one big region, not only they share the League, they also share Pokémon including pre-evolutions and evolutions. We saw Marill and Donphan in the first movie so that further proves it should be "one big region". I agree with your argument that Sudowoodo isn't from "West Kanto" aka Johto. The Sinnoh evolutions could be considered as if they are test subjects and and thus not natural occurrences, but should still belong to where their lines are from, "Kanto".

I'd say mons like Lickitung, Farfetch'd, Mr. Mime, and Jynx aren't native to Kanto. In Red and Blue you could only get one via trading with NPCs. When Gold and Silver came out however you could catch them in the wild in Johto.
