I’m not gonna tell you NOT to get one, but forewarn you of the dog that the Belgian Malinois is.
Although often mistaken for a German Shepherd, Malinois are a very different breed. Pronounced MALIN WAH, not mali-NOISE they are one of the 4 varieties of Belgian Sheep dogs: Groenendael, Tervuren, Lakenois, and the Malinois.
They are classified as Herding Dogs in the AKC.
IN the US these 4 dogs are considered 4 different breeds, but they are generally considered one breed, the Belgian sheep dog / with 4 different varieties.
Malinois were developed in the late 1800 around Malines Belgium and are named after that city. Their popularity quickly spread as not only agile herders, but great obedience and later great protection dogs.
The difference between Malinois & German Shepherds:
They're lighter boned, smaller in stature, have a square body as opposed to a rectangular /angulated body of a German shepherd. They range in color from fawn to dark mahogany with the trademarked black mask.
They are higher in drive, can even be high strung, they more eager to learn and may tend to aggression if not properly trained and socialized. They are happy to train and play and require a handler who can entertain them and not wear out.
Malinois are great dogs for savvy dog handlers - NOT SO MUCH for the novice.
If you want a Malinois you should be ready to train and exercise your dog regularly and that means EVERY DAY! That training must encompass both Physical and mental exercise!
They are generally not recommended for the first-time dog owner, apartment living or in homes with many other dogs or cats. They have a very high prey drive which can often times get them into trouble with small animals and small children.
Malinois are a square bodied breed with Males measuring between 24-26” tall and weighing 60-80 lbs
Malinois are short haired with a coat that is very hardy with a dense undercoat. The fur should be very short on the head, ears and lower legs, but somewhat longer around the neck where it forms a collarette as well as on the tail and backs of the thighs.
There is a difference between show line Malinois and working line mals, but not as grand as the difference with other breeds such as the German Shepherd. In fact, show line Malinois can do quite well in a working environment. Show line Mals may be better suited for less active homes, but make no mistake about it, they still need a job to do.
Working line Malinois are most often the ones you see in police work, military work and even dog sports such as IPO and ring sports. They may also do sports such as obedience, agility, dock diving and more, but many of these sports are also very well suited for show line dogs.
The ideal is a Malinois that is bred for both, like Goofy - a beautiful physical specimen that has a solid temperament. These dogs can do well at bite work and conformation and be great dogs to live with- without the crazy intensity of a working line high drive military dog.
Malinois are intensely loyal and form strong bonds with their families.
Malinois do best with good healthy food, good training and regular exercise as well as mental stimulation. They don’t do well kenneled or left alone for extended periods of time. They want to be with their people and they want to be doing something!
Training a Malinois takes patience and precision. They will learn whatever you teach them. The use of rewards is extremely beneficial for Mals and they LOVE tennis balls. In fact, tennis ball obsession is a joke among Malinois owners.
If you want a Belgian Malinois, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Do your research, take your time and strongly consider what you are getting yourself into. Malinois are a lot of work… and a lot of fun!

Before you buy a Malinois let me tell you you should not. Three years ago my grand daughter of then 10 was savagely attacked by a neighbour's malinois and could have died. She wasn't going near him, just leaving her house to go and see a friend and it threw itself at her and got hold of one of her legs. Ambulance, police etc. Won't bother you with the details. She was very brave, she could have bled to death. If these and some other dogs are born aggressive, then they shouldn't be sold to just anyone who won't know how to educate them, only police, military etc. Curse all these breeders and may they have the same bad luck as my little grand daughter. Wait till their families are affected.

I cant believe how I changed from not really loving the dog to wanting to be with her all the time. Really special dog.

Got a Mal pup for my home a month after my father passed. The dog has greatly helped my mum through the time by always being by either her side or mine. What really made her fall in love was when she fainted in the kitchen last year at midnight and the then 7month old pup barked to wake me and alert that something had happened . Amazing animal !

I recently got an 8 month old Malinois at our local shelter. The dog was turned over because trainers convinced the owners that they could not give this dog what she needed. The local trainers noticed the dog was becoming too pent up, anxious and prone to nip. They told the owners if you do not give this dog up she may develop psychological issues and turn on you. I found her at the shelter and for my lifestyle we are perfect together. We spend hours a day exercising and training. 3 months later this is a different dog. No nipping, no aggression, but I spend all day with her and many hours of that exercising and training. I just found your channel and will be all in on learning all I can. Thank you so much.

My first Malinois was a puppy we found in a shelter. We had no idea she was a Malinois, but a breeder/trainer saw her with my dad and told him. Now's it obvious. My second Malinois has a great sense of humor. She's a beast, too. Such a sweetheart and great with kids. She's 13 & 1/2. She doesn't like tennis balls, just bones and remote controls. The only thing she has killed has been coffee in the cup holder and groceries in the back of my suburban... Oh and the remote controls.

Same here. Adopted a "german shepherd mix" super young puppy and turned out to be malinoi... I've always loved dogs and my father bred pit bulls (like the real registered legit ones but was no trainer). My mal changed my life. It was hard at first and occasionally still but I spend hundreds of hours online in channels like this and joined a protection training club with people who really know their stuff and she is an amazing dog. I get compliments all over. Even a neighbor I never spoke to knocked on door bc she bought a puppy and asked me what to do bc she see's my girl "ren" listen to me and be off leash in front of house all the time. She is almost 3 now and I've almost thought of changing my career in healthcare to formally being educated in like service dog or protection training. Can't wait until I move and buy a house more rural and with huge backyard so I can get a second high quality one. Just sucks 90% of the people who do get these dogs in up in shelters or put down bc nobody puts in "any" effort to learn or pay for training.

Definitely since my retirement i exclusively work with traumatized shepherds and im baffled at how many people fail to understand how lethal they can become as for the people who think its their right to own a dog no that is exactly what causes many fatal incidents as a owner u shouldn't have rights just responsibilities animals in question should have rights lucky in my country if u neglecte abuse or your pet causes harm u lose the privilege of owning pets

I got my Mal when he was already over a year old and owned by a family that did not know how to train a "high end breed". It took a lot of work that I was really not prepared for because I spent most of my life raising Rott's, Shepards and wolf hybrids. These dogs are on a whole new level. They are almost like raising a child just in the way they think. If you want one of these dogs be prepared for having a companion that needs you in his/her life daily and will look to you for training and love.

Amazing bread. I have a 4 year old female and she’s the best dog I’ve ever had. They’re for the dog enthusiast though, someone who likes to work and train them, not for a casual owner who takes his dog three times a day for a 10 minute walk and then forgets about its existence. The ball obsession is truth. Mine is extremely calm at home, but when I take out the ball, damn, that’s something.

I've had a few dogs before, even a lab/sth else cross who was extremely intelligent but as a kid I wasn't able to give him the training he deserved. I got my mali last year as the first dog I was actually committed to train. I live in a mountain area town so we have a lot of outdoor options for active dogs. He's almost 1,5 years old now and he changed my life completely. I never missed a morning 5-6 kilometres since he turned about 8 months and a long backyard play in the afternoon. Everywhere I go he comes with me and he's very well behaved even in outdoor restaurants or forest barbecue with food present just beside him. He loves coming up the mountain and wild camping with me. There hardly seems to be a limit on his mileage. I was amazed at how fast does this breed learn. A lot of his training was done following the advises and exercises of Robert's channel. Thank you for your guidance, keep on helping us live happily with our dogs!

We had a wonderful Lurcher {Irish Crossbreed} who was very 'brainy' and lived for walks. I have never been so fit as when we had her! She lived for tennis balls, and despite not being a Malinois she had the same type of build and size and black mask as a younger dog. She loved brainwork, too..even climbing up a tall wooden climbing frame to get to us! I miss her deeply..[She was PTS at home at 12 yrs approx due to osteosarcoma] ..A dog whose temperament dovetails with your own is a delight. Currently dogless, which is horrible.

Mine turned 3 in March and finally showed some signs of calming down. Even with the backdrop of living on a farm he’s been a challenge to keep busy enough. I’ve always had Rottweilers or German Sheppards ( 50 yrs of having a dog or dogs ) and this. Is my first Malinois (Zeke). Our dogs have always accompanied us horse back riding, hunting and pretty Much everywhere we go that’s suitable for them. I have to say, for pure intelligence, athleticism, ease of training and most amazing his level of intuition, there is no comparison between Zeke and any other dog I’ve owned. He’s also the most loving dog I’ve ever had. His dedication to protection of family members was automatic especially for my wife and two young grandchildren. He is extra large 92lbs probably due to all the venison he’s had since he was 10weeks + suitable people food and kibbles for filler. What a comfort it is to know when my wife’s alone with the grandchildren you better not enter uninvited threaten them or you’re in for a very bad day!

How is he on the farm? With such a high prey drive, does he chase animals? We just got one mixed with German shepherd, and he wants to chase the chickens. Trying to socialize him with them now, but wondering how nature vs nurture is going to play out

@@dolcepescas6153 it’s now 3 yrs later and we’ve since moved from a very big house 7740 sq ft and 10 acres to a 3100 sq ft and 34 acres. He’s 6 now and unlike before we are also in the chicken business (about 25). We had to resort to a training collar to convince him not to terrorize the flock at every opportunity. We have mxd feelings about using it especially since he’s been trained on treats and positive reinforcement. But it worked out well, He was hell bent on getting a chicken but after a month in the collar and a few shocks he’s gotten the message and the collar has been in a drawer since. Now he’ll chase them out of the garden on command but will come back or stop when told, and he’s very chill when we go collect the eggs together.

This is a great video. Straight-forward, and timely for myself. My wife and I have considered getting a Malinois, but I'm more partial to a Rottie or a GSD because they better match our energy levels. I'm keen on spending time with the animals and training them, but she's not interested in the training part without me. As much as I'd love a Malinois for myself, they've got more energy than our living can accommodate right now.

Love Malinois and other variations of Belgians. Went with a working line Giant Schnauzer myself for a private security career dog as the size and strength gives it easier time capturing targets that don't feel pain and could hurt smaller body dog while throwing it around. I've completely seen why GS is not so popular as a working dog anymore as they are much more stubborn and seem to age a lot slower (as I was aware). Love the goofiness and daily training with him as my older dogs are not up to my own energy anymore. Although I have a lot of dog training experience, I signed into your member are just to see what you have to offer. I was very happy to see I've trained my dogs in similar manner already, but you have still some very, very helpful notes here and there that have fine tuned obedience with the more stubborn Schnauzer. You do great work and I hope more people would take dog training to a healthy direction you have shown, even for just easy and lovely family dogs.

Thank you, Robert for all that you’ve given to the dog community and the Malinois in particular! I have a now 4yr old black sable Malinois, 24 1/2” tall and 53-55lbs. He is such a fantastic dog. He’s well mannered and super loving. If I sit or lay down and say “puppy duppy” in any context, he will proceed to jump on me and bombard me with kisses and hugs. He’s respectful around my kids (3&5yr boys) and very tolerant of their shenanigans, and loves our cat too. Our vet and groomer says he’s one of their best patients/clients. Play time and obedience is his favorite (of course), with the bite/tug “pillow” as his FAVORITE. He’ll go until I have to pump the breaks to make sure he drinks water and has a 5min rest. When it’s time to relax, he’ll be (from my description) “feet up, b@lls out like he owns the place” without a care in the world. I wouldn’t trade Koda for the world. Much love and respect, have a great day!

Great video! We have a mal boxer mix and she’s fiercely loyal to us, including our other two dogs. Will go to any lengths for tennis balls, can run and jump like crazy but is high strung. We love her to bits but we have to very cautious with her around other dogs. At the same time, she’s so goofy.

I don't have a malinois, but I have a groenendael - they can be tricky to handle sometimes, needs a lot of work, attention and a confident and calm owner who can understand that breed, but they are so different than other breeds I know. The way they love is so special that it's totally worth it. :)

I havent had her tested but expect shes a mix with mallanois. Wouldnt have got her knowing lol but shes a good dog just needs alot from me to keep her engaged thanks for this video. 😊

We now have our second Mechelar named "Breaker", a rescue who is just 18 months old. Got him at the beginning of December. He weighs in at 64 pounds. This lovely, sweet dog is joined at the hip with our little Jack Russell/Maltese cross, just 17 pounds. They sleep together and play together. When they "wrestle", little Freddie always gets to win. Don't try to "break" into "Breaker's" home, however", as you will be exiting minus a few body parts.

@Robert Cabral watched all of your videos and because of you my good sir, My female belgian malinois of 3 MONTHS is extremely obedient. The hint I've learned is the exercise. If you give your belgian enough exercise, in my case: 3x walk a day + the park w/ hiking and fetching they become more expectable to the training. It takes patients like any dog of course but my god I've never had a dog at 3 months sit, lay down, up, stay, come and heel. She has her moments of not paying attention because of the "smells" but what do you expect from a puppy who just entered this world. Thank you so much!

We rescued a lab mix brother/sister at 3mo, never been separated... a friend showed us this breed at 5 mo and come to find out they look and act more like malinois mix. They're projected to be 100lbs. It explains why the PetSmart classes weren't working. We are first time dog owners and it's pretty overwhelming. Nothing we've tried works, they are the smartest and most stubborn dogs I've ever met. Dont get me wrong we got them for life, not to give up. A friend recommended your channel and we are SO relieved. Its been hard to find anything on how to train them. I can't wait to try all of your techniques and suggestions and to understand my pups better!

Big mistake letting 2 puppies grow up together never separated.. might be why you're having trouble training. They bond more to each other than to you. When they're so bonded, you become more like the zoo keeper - bringing the food to them while they enjoy their life together and don't listen to you because you're not the boss. We got 2 puppies (unrelated) same age, same time, and have really been keeping them separated as much as possible, and always training separate

@@DougHinVA no. They are family because they look at you that way. You have to understand their instincts before getting any dog. You are part of their pack and because you distribute the commands, you are considered the alpha. If your dog is not listening to you he/she is either poorly trained or they might be young (which is normal). What you are talking about is a piece of paper that doesn't mean shit to a dog.

My Mal is my service dog and being retired early in life, it works out for us both. Found a great trainer who specializes in working dogs, police dogs, Mals and Shepard’s basically. We are together 24/7 and his daily exercise is mine as well. He is only 8 months but has come a long way in a short time. My Mal is rare, he has no desire for the tennis ball, at all. He loves tug of war, his thing. His protection training probably started that so I have appropriate equipment for him. Love this breed, did the research and having great results.

I was given a Belgian Malinois by an acquaintance. I didn't really know what I was getting into. BUT I LOVE this dog! I have a trainer coming in about a week to help me. My dog bit myself and a friend of the family. The previous owner did not socialize this boy. My dog was used for Shutzund and he got rid of him b/c the dog broke his upper canines trying to get out of his kennel. I need to learn more about metal stimulation for my dog and need to increase his physical activity. I will have him a year in Aug. He really is a good boy and very well trained but I need more training so I can be a better owner.

I have had a German Shepherd for a couple of months till she died from Parvo. Now I have a Malinois that is almost as old as my German Shepherd was when she died (4 months) and I can confirm that they are completely different breeds. I am a new dog owner so at about 2.5 months old my malinois was out of control and outright dangerous. I contacted Richard Heinz who then gave me advice on how to handle the situation and within a week of when I started to train him the way he told me his aggression pretty disappeared. When trained correctly Malinois learn extremely fast. It's amazing. They're not for everyone though.

I truly appreciate your expertise and no nonsense advice Mr Cabral. I adopted a female GS over a year ago. I've always believed she was part of another breed but could not put my finger on it. I have always had rough collies. I am suspecting she's part malinois now...from her head and energy level... as someone made the observation claiming my dog is part mal and looked like their dog's 'sister'. I wonder if you could tell me just from a photo? She's just turned 4 yrs and is 70lbs. She has a shorter-legged build, a level back and described to me as a working line GS by the shelter. Thank you!!
