Believe In Getter - A Complete Retrospective on Getter Robo and The Legacy of Ken Ishikawa

Getter Robo is one of the greatest manga of all time and its creator and artist, the late great Ken Ishikawa was an industry legend who deserves a massive amount of recognition, this video is my love letter to Getter Robo and Ishikawa's broader work. With the upcoming Getter Robo Arc anime airing this Summer 2021 Season, there's no better time to take a the journey chronicling the entire franchise from its conception to its phenomenal anime OVA's, to its most recent spinoff. I worked for the better part of a year (actually a bit over a year) on this massive tribute to my favorite mecha franchise. Im sorry that it has caused me to be absent from the site for over a year. But this video ended up becoming something far more than it was originally intended, which is fitting considering the size and impact of this incredible series and Ishikawa's other fantastic work. The reason why is the length and scope of this video, I dont think ill ever make something on this level again for a long time, this is easily one of the greatest things ive ever made on a series and artist I adore, expect a more consistent upload schedule from now on! There is a small audio overlap glitch at 42:03-42:12 where I left in takes of me going "LIKE THIS SHIRT RIGHT HERE" 3 times lmfao, its not major but if you cant hear what I say clearly in this part cause of this error its "but I gotta give it credit for being one of the few times Getter ever came to the west at all, even in a butchered form. Your like the first person to ever go over Kyomu Senki ALONGSIDE Getter Robo, and I praise that. Cause the two series is so intrinsically connected. Hell TTGL is a reference to BOTH for a reason. Hope that Kyomu Senki Compilation get the best FULL TRANSLATION it deserves. ...and other Ken Ishikawa Stuff, like Bug, especially considering GETTER ROBO ARC is gonna use Bug in the story.

Even though I've only finished the first part of the Getter Robo manga, I definitely feel that to some small degree, Ishikawa intended Getter to be demonic from the outset. It's an insanely powerful machine piloted by troubled, crazy ass teens. The kinda stuff Getter rays can do is wild, and keep on feeling ominous alongside the Getter Robo itself. Maybe I'm off-base, but that's how it feels. Badass video man.

The anime's ending further enforces the cosmic horror aspect of the franchise, and I hope to see it continue be it via spin offs or alternate universes or even a sequel to Arc.

Just to respond to one specific element of your vidoeo, regarding Imagawa's original plot for Change! Getter Robo. While we can never know for certain what he intended to do, Imagawa has a very distinct style and preference for certain storytelling trops that have appeared consistently in every one of his major works, from G Gundam to Giant Robo to Shin Mazinger, and I think it's a good bet he intended to give those same ideas a spin here. Specifically, I believe Imagawa was going to tie the origin of the Invaders very explicitly to Getter Rays. There are numerous hints towards this in the first three episodes, from the never-explained wreckage of Getter 1 that explodes into an outpouring of Invaders as it falls to the moon, to Stinger and Coen both being Saotome's former partners, to the revelation of Michiru's fate (which I have to believe got discussed early on enough for Kawagoe to carry the idea into his later half). Saotome might not have known what Getter was really capable of doing until the Michiru incident, after which he orchestrated faking his own death with Hayato's help so he could work on Shin Dragon in secret. It, along with Gou, (Not)Gore and (Not)Burai were meant to 'fix' the problem of the Getter Rays and stop the inevitable evolution of the Invaders. Moreover the effect the getter beams have on Invaders is very telling: they don't burn or simply explode, they start to hyper-evolve, growing multiple eyes and limbs before their physiology simply fails and they fall apart. Imagawa loves to do this thing where the villain he presents in the beginning is never the 'real' problem; it always turns out that they were trying to solve an even WORSE problem through desperate and often amoral means. Dr. Hell in Shin Mazinger wasn't just trying to conquer the world, he was actively trying to prepare for the arrival of the Mikene. Dr. Vogler wasn't trying to destroy the Shizuma Drive in Giant Robo, he was trying to fix the drives before their natural effect obliterated all oxygen in the atmosphere. And here, Saotome wasn't trying to bring about Armaggedon, he was trying to stop it by creating something that could actually withstand/control the unchecked evolutionary power of Getter Rays. That's why the area around Shin Dragon started shifting back into more primitive evolutionary states. It's literally trying to undo the progress that would send mankind right into the claws of the Invaders.

I defiantly agree with you, if Imagawa had stuck around he would have done his usual thing, and considering how masterful those first 3 episodes are I think that version may have gone down as maybe in my top 5 anime of all time, but reality aint like that and the Armageddon we got is still solid as is. That said though Imagawa's approach to morality would have matched up with the manga perfectly.

Hmm, that makes a lot more sense compared to the what I thought was going to happen, I personally think that Gore and Burai becoming corrupted when Go didn’t was due to forcing Invader infection on uninflected cells while Go’s cells coming from a dead infected Michiru made him stable and thus immune to the invaders

My theory is that Go has invader cells but perfected. I mean invaders and humans are from the same organic matter but evolved differently. Go showed he could control invaders. Second, Coen and Stinger said they made a huge mistake when they touched Go. Gore and Brie was hit by devolution rays and became invader-esque monsters. Their evolution path is different than Go's(Hayato said Go has memory of loved ones). If you read Imagawa's Getter manga, Saotome wants to pollute Earth with Getter Rays to keep Michiru alive. I think the idea is similar to Alien and other horror movies from the 80s.

I'm the guy that only really knows Getter from Super Robot Wars from my love of Gundam but the hot blooded energy of Getter has always made it into my fav mechs of those games. I keep coming back to this video every so often as a memorial to the life and times of Ken Ishikawa. I look up to Ken Ishikawa (and subsequently Kentaro Miura) and most likely will for the rest of my life. Getter Robo is my all-time favorite super robot series as well as the biggest inspiration for my indie comic, Primal Warrior Draco Azul. I sat down and watched this whole video in one go. I've always seen clips of Getter Robo Armageddon and had always got me curious and last year I sat down and got through the manga. That was an experience, powered through the main manga in two days and then got through the OVAs. The editing and the passion you bring to this video is on point. Thanks for also diving into his other works for us to check out as welll as diving gently into themes that Ken Ishikawa were also interested in and explored in his works. I'm definitely interested in exploring his other works and how he narrates those storylines as well. Sadly I was very turned off by getter Robo Darkness after my first binge of the series which made me leave out on checking the other stories other artists have made but thanks for putting down a guideline for the others. Would love to see a review on Getter Robo Devolution. I haven't gotten around to that series yet but to hear your thoughts on it in greater detail would be amazing. I've only watched Getter Robo Armageddon and New Getter Robo, of the two I heavily prefer armageddon in every way and didn't like Getter until I watched armageddon this might have to do with me not having seen any previous work of Getter Robo but having watched the video seeing that armageddon referenced and used stuff from previous entries makes me like it even more. What I'm also just really happy with knowing is that the combining mech trope comes from Getter which is a trope I like very much and you definitely convinced me to dive deeper into the franchise. I definitely felt your passion and love for Ken Ishikawa's works and Getter Robo. Thanks for all the info I'll keep this as a reference video to know what I want to read and watch.

If other successful toy driven franchises like Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and the like are any indication, there's something specifically about it being toys that occasionally uncorks a creator's primal sense of imagination. I've once heard the process described as like, tapping directly into the part of the brain that once got so much joy from simply spinning yarn using whatever's in the toy box. Makes an isoteric sort of sense why such works stand the test of time, there often a very distinct difference in vibe between something made for a mere paycheck, verses something fueled by enthusiasm.

Amazing video on Getter Robo and all of Ken Ishikawa's body of work in general. I saw at least 10 chapters of High translated somewhere last year but I don't know where. As for SRW Cross Omega, you might call it lackluster but that game made the impossible possible. All the crossovers it got from all over the place were just so unexpected in all sorts of ways. Mega Man finally in some sort of SRW game, a Minky Momo crossover that actually points out how close Momo looks to Haman Khan, Obari appearing in the game as himself to give the Poputepipiku girls a mech of their own, Sakura Wars in a SRW game, other one off mechs from shows that don't even have anything to do with mechs being added into the game. It was at least amazing for what it managed to accomplish while it was active.

I just stumbled on Getter Robo by having a clip from Armageddon suggested to me on KZbin. Watched it, then the whole OVA series. Now I'm hooked. Thank you for this love letter of a video to the Getter Robo franchise. I rmb playing the Getters in the few Super Robot Wars games that I've played and was infatuated everytime I get to use the Getter becuz of how op and how much of a banger the song played alongside the atks and always wondered about the many different variations of Getter there are and the story behind them. This video finally explains all my question and I can finally say I understand all the epic scenes of Getter Robo from all the AMVs whenever I listen to a Getter song.

Great video, i have a few versions of Getter robot, but I collect more Mazinger , Great Mazinger and mazinkaizer, by Go Nagai, Getter, Grandaizer, Gayking, Getter Dragon, Rydeen,are part of my collection, I love mechas, started watching Tetsuyen 28 in the early 70s and Mazinger z in 76.I'm 55 still a big fan, your not the only one to get emotional, I grew up with this , raised my 3 kids with it they are 35, 34, 24 years old now we share this with my grandson 7 yrs old today August 11th, thank you for a great video and history on Getter Robot.

As someone who considers Getter Robo to be their Favorite Super Robot series(besides Braves) and as a series that means a lot to me, I think you did an absolutely beautiful job with this video. I would speak my mind on each entry, but I think you absolutely nailed what made each entry really great. New Getter esp as that's probably my favorite Getter anime as well for all the reasons you mentioned, as it really feels like the most ishikawa esc in writing and tone and has a phenomenal song list. Even as a guy who's a fan of Ishikawa, I really appreciated you went the extra length to mention his other manga as there isn't a whole lot of info of them in English, so I found that pretty informative. Ishikawa's body of work really is a one of a kind that no one else has touched upon. I've only read Majuu sensen which I'm a fan of, but I definitely wanna check out Kyomu Senki and Yakuza Weapon. The Later esp because I'm a fan of Tak Sakaguchi due to being in Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus. Another thing I really gotta give you credit on unlike every other vid that would talk about getter is actually talking about the Toei shows and recognizing their merits. I will admit I haven't fully seen them yet, but they are as just you said significant in shaping getter's legacy. The Getter Robo Go anime I actually have seen Raw and more or less feel the same. It feels more like a Toei mech show than anything getter related, which is fine in that regard but even compared to other robot shows at the time, it isn't as strong as stuff like Braves, Eldran, Wataru, and so on. Compared to Toei's other mech shows, I actually found it somewhat similar in feel to Toei's Transformers shows like Super God Master force, Victory, and Zone which is kinda interesting for someone like me. The best thing about it are definitely the designs and music, which has some of the best getter songs out there. As for Getter arc's anime, I'm very much looking forward to see how it goes and knowing Kawagoe I can see it turning out great. With how Getter Arc never got a proper ending, It'll be interesting to see how Kawagoe will conclude it. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Cyborg 009 and Shotaro Ishinomori, but this isn't the first time Kawagoe has tackled a series with a unfinished final arc. His 2001 cyborg 009 anime covered the infamous God's War arc that was never finished and while it didn't completely wrap it up, he did handle it really well and leaving it on a open ending note. I can see something like that happening with Getter Robo Arc, but we'll have to see until it airs.

Kawagoe's 009 was actually one of the first anime I ever watched next to Yu Yu Hakusho, G Gundam, and Rurouni Kenshin, it definitely helped shape my taste early on, and its part of the reason why I trust Kawagoe and his crew so much in being able to create a slightly more concrete, if still open ending.

I have admired Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa for a whlie now, but i never knew the true depths of his creation, his legacy and the power his name represents in the anime/manga culture and world.
