I don't think it's really there yet as there is already PIR insulation in the market, which is still relatively new, but very promising, as it doesn't degrade, all the bubbles are closed in this foam, so no moisture inside of it. It does not burn and provides excellent insulation properties compared to common materials like polystyrene, or rockwool Mainly it's not the problem with insulation itself, but the combination of factors, like the way it's applied, or which doors and windows are being used, and if there is a heat recuperator in the ventilation system installed. Besides, why use a more expensive material in the first place, if you can use just a bigger quantity of a cheaper material. Its also worth mentioning that it's an equation where you balance the financial cost to implement this Vs the energy savings, we achieve way more cost benefit if improving the cheaper issues first like roof insulation or installing double glazed windows as a mandatory procedure in all newly constructed buildings. Besides such expensive materials need even better performing workforce on the ground, where it's already lacking in many countries in the quality of work concluded. Why use more expensive materials in the first place if a typical builder can mess up the insulation process while already using cheaper materials, if there are mistakes made in the way the building is constructed, it eliminates all the extra quality material costs involved.

Yes, aerogel has been touted for years as the best insulation but so far there are so few commercial uses. The building you spoke about is the first I have heard of it being used commercially.

I think aerogel insulation would be great for use in projects where space is limited, such as in container home construction. That said, it sounds like it needs to be more generally available and less expensive.

Did a remodel many years ago where, once the sheetrock was removed, the walls were meticulously covered with taped on newspaper. Each page was, with very great care, fitted around and onto the walls and studs. An amazing sight as whomever did it was, without doubt, eccentric.

Aerogel is such a fascinating material. Extreme cold-weather gear made with areogel insulation is incredibly thin compared to the very bulky gear with other types of insulation. It is so effective that it can actually cause overheating very easily if it is used in temperatures above zero.

I had not considered clothing as a possible use for this stuff. Is the dustiness somehow contained within whatever sleeve/pouch the aerogel might be woven into, or do they use a different binding media than the fiberglass for walls?

This sounds amazing for insolation in boats / yachts, where moisture and compression are high, fire-resistant and space is a premium!

If you could combine the podcast with on location exhibits like this, interviewing the players at the warehouse, boy, that would be incredible. Thank you for this, very interesting material and if they could hit a price point, even if its a bit higher, the advantages would out weigh the cost.

I love aerogels!! Thank you for the update. It's so cool and exciting to see new forms, I'm blown away by the fact that they managed to make one that is both hydrophobic AND fire resistant. It makes me happy that folks are working to bring the material costs down. I definitely want to knw about the wood inspired and clear products too. Off to research! I love your videos

I live in an older home who construction predated modern insulation techniques. As a consequence, there is not a lot of room between the exterior walls and the matrix on which the lath and plaster are anchored. As we have needed to excavate walls to replace original plumbing, electric, etc, we have encountered spaces unsuitable for most insulation products. This could be a good solution. As a builder videos like these are pretty interesting to me. To see innovations opens the mind to possibilities, but as always, cost is typically the biggest hurdle for most homeowners (for good reason). So hopefully they can get the cost down on this stuff or other innovations in the same vein so I can sell it to my clients. Thanks for your work!

From what I know of aerogel the pressures needed to produce it are very high. I would think that this would bee one of the big hurdles in reducing the cost. I also wonder how it compares in longevity to rockwool or fiberglass insulation. As always an excellent video

I am considering building my new home with only with mini splits units. With the overall cost of a single unit compared to a centeral air it would be overall cheaper and better. Since I am doing a single level I am opting to install a filter system. I have not decided if I want in stall one large mini split and then add more per additional rooms. I am looking at a direct solar connection to the mini splits that can run solar only mode, grid only or a combo of the 2. Right now they only come in 1 ton and 2 ton single head units. The company that makes them also sells water heaters that are the same way as wel. Either way I plan on installing a filter system that is like an hvac system yet runs on direct DC and then another one that runs on AC. These will be small hvac system that start in a filtered ceiling return box then spit out to several small 4 inch lines to vents in each room and then around the other areas. This will help filter the air during the day time via just solar. I am working on a prototype project right now. I will have several of these in my home. Which will be covered by over 2 feet of blown insulation. Right now our current hvac system is in the crawl space with is cool and there is little insulation around each pipe.

It's interesting it's benefit to older construction. Our house is 150 years old and one issue with doing a lot of DIY is that much of the modern building materials and methods are designed to make the building airtight. This is okay to a certain degree, but with older houses some air and vapour flow is necessary to allow things to dry and not rot.

Interesting to learn about the dustiness, and iritation of throat and lungs. Makes me wonder if it's the next asbestos. That is a wonder material for heat resistance too. But now it's known to be dangerous to health, and fairly costly to remove because people are so scared of it. I hope aerogels don't become a future problem in a similar way.

What about it's breakdown by heat? Will that produce toxic or cancer causing gases that firefighters will have to deal with? 390 deg F sounds like a lot, but that is lower than woods resistance.

I’d close off the fresh air intake in the HVAC system to stop the outside air from working against the system. Your insulation can’t do much if it’s constantly battling against an open door.

My only concern is that the silica is so fine, if it is airborne it could easily get into the lungs and possibly cause silicosis. We are still pulling asbestos out of buildings because of similar concerns.

I think the aerogel for windows is going to be the biggest game changer. If it's actually as translucent as the recearch paper says it is.. Windows are always the crux of a wall assembly. If we can one day make windows that are significantly more insulating, I think that'll be huge in building/hvac design

Great video as always! Asbestos in Australia is a multigenerational issue - from the unfortunates who mined and manufactured original products, to those living in deteriorating buildings today. What risk does aerogel pose to residents, manufacturers and installers given it has a silica component?

The R-value per inch isn't very relative when it is only 10mm thick. To get better R-value you would have to use several layers of the stuff and it is already outrageously priced for 1 layer. They're going to have to do alot better to make this viable.

Yeah its 200 to 600 dollars for a 4x8 sheet. It is going to have to be far cheaper. Which is the reason why not many people use it. Though it would be ideal for a lot of things if they could make it inches thick like foam board.
