Do you have any videos on how you handled finances when the depression took your spouse out of work for a few months?

We don't, no. But I can answer that after using up his vacation, he had a note from his psychiatrist recommending a leave from work, so it was covered as sick time.

Do you recommend individual therapy or couples therapy? Or both? What has been the best for you guys?

Yeah I would say potentially both, but you can't go wrong starting with yourself. We have done both where we were at a time where conflict was quite frequent, but when I was going through depression it was more just me getting individual counselling. I guess that is because our issues then weren't conflict but withdrawal. I've gotten used to talking about how I am feeling, whereas some men might really struggle with that part. If you think there are things that you are unable to fully communicate about, then couples counselling could really help.

I suffer from Major Depression. Living in the sunshine of Florida helps. But we need better medicine. Most of the meds used today were developed in the mid-80's. When I get a new psychiatrist, I tell them when they go to their conferences, bring up the fact we need to develop better medicines. What we have now may be better than what we had in the 1950's, but it still is NOT good enough! Since the mid-80's, the new drugs have just been a variation of the same basic chemical makeup - same side effects, same efficacy, etc. We need drugs that work faster, more completely, and without so many side effects - damn it! The family of SSRIs cannot be the final answer for depression and anxiety.

I think it’s important to note that there are different levels of depression. You referenced the word “season” a lot. I know not so much to describe Josh’s depression since it’s Clinical. Being someone who suffers from clinical mental illness as well, the word season made me cringe a little every time you referenced it. I don’t want anyone to think depression as a whole can go away in time- with just a change of season.

Thats a good point, thank you. I have experienced it as a season in the past (a number of months, rather than years), and now it has been an 8 year long "season." We don't want to minimize the fact that it can go on for years, decades, or a lifetime. At the same time, we don't want to lose hope of coping well with in. Point well taken.
