Bell’s Palsy (Facial Paralysis) | Causes (Viruses), Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Bell Palsy is a condition involving paralysis of the facial nerve (Cranial nerve VII), which is responsible for facial movements and expressions, taste sensation and lacrimation. In Bell’s Palsy, the facial nerve is affected due to ischemia, edema or another process that may be triggered by a viral infection with particular viruses (herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster virus) or some bacteria (mycoplasma and syphilis). In this lesson, we discuss the facial nerve and pathophysiology of Bell’s palsy, the signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated by clinicians.

You need to try to speak up AEIOU this is one exercise, other thing you can stroke leaves, flowers, soft brushes upward to your paralysed face. Try to blow on the paralysed side. This helps alot.

I got a job this year and my life is back to normal, so go out enjoy yourself and continue living the life you want.

My husband woke up one the day before Christmas with Bell's Palsy. It scared him enough to actually go to the emergency room to find out what happened. Up until this morning before Christmas he refused to see or talk with a doctor about the Flu he had and how crappy he was feeling. Come to find out not only did he the Flu and Bell's Palsy, his blood sugar was well over 400. Up until then he would brag about not seeing a doctor in 30 years. He was very lucky that the Bell's Palsy appeared to sent him to a doctor. He could have went into a diabetic coma. At the time we lived at least 50 miles from the nearest hospital.

A bit of rectification is required here. Chorda Tympani is not involved in hearing. It carries taste sensation from anterior two thirds. Nerve to stapedius is involved in Bell's palsy and leads to hyperacusis.

I had bells palsy when I was 12 and was told it was due to my bodies reaction of a traumatic or stressful situation. I've always believed that when I'm too stressed then it would come back because I'd been made to believe it wasn't virus related. So odd to discover otherwise. Even more bizarre was that my treatment simply included PT to "wake up" the nerves and then an eye patch and eye drops since my right eye couldn't close at all. Thanfully within a couple of weeks it cleared but I never regained full function and still have a slight distortion by my mouth where that side was affected with paralysis.

Same I had it when I was ten although I'm suspicious it was a stroke as I couldn't move my right arm or the right side of my face. I use to mix lots of aspirin with coca cola and drink it I think that may of been a factor. I am also still slightly lop sided now. Glad you are ok x

We dont know what causes it. Cuz no one in the emergancy room had any idea what was wrong or what caused it. They told me "We dont see anything wrong, u dont have an ear infection but thats the only meds we can give to see what happens. Basically, what i heard was, we have no idea.

What about deficiencies? No one ever considers those. Electrolyte imbalances (& as serum blood tests do not show cellular levels, which can be vastly different to serum levels as the body generally keeps blood level homeostasis, what is really going on with the electrolytes may be missed completely - only when cellular levels are critical mat serum levels start to drop), Vitamins B1 &/or B12 deficiencies, Vitamin D deficiency (which often occurs in the Winter & can drive hypocalcemia), etc, may all be potential factors. Plus, the ‘stress management’ nutrients like the B vitamins & Magnesium can get hammered during periods of stress, trauma, illness (inc Virus), etc. B1 deficiency is rarely tested, & again, because serum tests do not show cellular levels, B12 tests can often be exceedingly misleading. They also do not determine how much of the serum B12 is active or inactive. If most is inactive, it’s not getting into the cells & although the serum level may seem fine on paper, it may actually be meaningless in practice.

Truth is as soon as you get diagnosed with bells palsy you have to start corticosteroids (prednisolone) . The earlier you start the steroid the faster you will heal even if your at a dose of 10mg twice a day for atleast 3 weeks. The most benefiting drug is a steroid but one week isn't enough

@VenturiLife
@VenturiLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@aklaasvandalen207 First up. Not a doctor: No, or unlikely. What can happen in some fairly common cases (not involving a direct injury), is some kind of viral infection like a bad cold / flu and/or an inner ear infection or similar; the nerve involved (the 7th cranial nerve) can then suffer inflammation, swells, and gets pinched and bruised (as it passes through tight passageways in the skull etc). You must try and address it within 48 hours. They will typically administer antivirals / retrovirals (which probably don't do that much), but will give you corticosteroids which reducing the swelling and help the nerve start the healing process, you'll end up taking corticosteroids for about 6 weeks and slowly taper off them. If it's not addressed with treatment in the 48 hours, they say there are cases where Bell's Palsy can end up as a permanent thing with half your face, tongue etc. basically paralysed, which is a horrible outcome. Woke up with it once, and had to seek treatment, started coming good in a day or two after treatment, but you have to stick with the corticosteroids unfortunately for weeks. They will probably also recommend touching, stroking the affected side of the face to stimulate nerve response. I can't see how accupuncture could do anything useful here, but I don't use it as a treatment.
