Rob Bob is responsible for getting me interested in water + plants, and the birth of my greenthumb interests; and Hoocho catapulted my ability to run hydroponics in my place. Thank you both so much, man! Grateful for you two working out a video together! Cheers!

I recently purchased a 3d printer during black friday, mainly to make custom grow room vent attachments for my mycology production, but also to start exploring the idea of customizing my hydroponics setup

1:32 Would it be better to have some built in 'knock-outs' to increase flow in case people are dealing with substantial roots blocking the flow? Or the other hand, put in plugs to fill some of the inlets, possibly use a slider/door to expose the extra inlets?

It’s like a Pythagorean cup! It’s a wine cup designed to make guests less greedy with their pours. Or maybe just one guy got fed up with his one friend in Ancient Greece. If you fill it too far the whole cup drains once the siphon engages.

How about setting up a rain gutter grow sistem with a bell siphon at the end? Maybe in a bucket to make it easier to set the water level...

I make printed vases for my wife's flower shop, and getting them to not leak was quite the challenge. Since I use vase mode for this we are only dealing with a single wall so print geometry plays a factor as well. Anyway with the proper design I get watertight prints using a .8mm nozzle with an extrusion multiplier of 1.3, or 130%. This is going to be a bit too much for something with multiple walls, but you can always just print a single wall, maybe two with the rest being infill, or lower the extrusion rate to something a little lower than 1.3, but higher than 1. Increasing the extrusion rate is one of the keys to watertight/airtight prints. Also if your filament is wet it will boil off the water as it passes through the nozzle which will create bubbles that pop turning into holes.

Why would your filament be wet?
@masondawson4061
@masondawson4061 Жыл бұрын
Most filaments are hygroscopic. Some more than others. It's the same thing as when you open a bag of potato chips, and they get stale, loosing their crunch. Especially in the summer when things are nice, and humid. It is kind of counterintuitive to think of plastic this way, but it is so. Take for example Nylon. You just about have to print it directly from a filament dryer, or it will soak up too much water from the atmosphere to be any good to print with.@@christiankapler1618

Isn’t the flood/drain cycle a bit quick? I thought it would need longer times without water.
@Hoocho
@Hoocho Жыл бұрын
The quick flood and drain is really just a very effective way of maintaining a saturation of DO dissolved oxygen within the nutrient and water. Which is sufficient for plants to grow.

@@chia_pet7121 .. wasn't actually referring to the video but responding to a comment.. of he thinks fingerlings are pricy he's never kept aquarium fish ($10-15 each is a normal low end price) or koi (good koi run $250-5000 and up) .. my pond runs $100 a year on fat heads to feed the other fish.. chemicals might seem cheaper to start but they add up also. .. what's expensive - a snapper moving into your stocked pond.. we are know fencing the ponds and setting traps to get the snapping turtles out
