One thing i appreciate about all of Hooche's videos is that not only does he experiment with all styles of hydro but he is willing to show both success and failure. He always explains his thought process behind the particular builds. I would like to know, "if you started a new farm and just wanted production, what would you install and what systems would you now avoid.

I assume the net cups produce slightly more, but the Dutch buckets look so easy to clean/swap. Convenience is a major motivator for me.

I think for scaling up, containing the roots greatly reduces maintenance and clogging issues. Final decision depends on the yield, I guess! :)

Keeping the roots out of the gutter with the multibucket adapter seems like a killer feature for maintenance. Would love to see the anti-root feature maybe make its way back to the grow spike?

Have you considered using something like Home Assistant and some cheap water sensors to get notifications when reservoir go dry?

Thanks for another great experiment, Hoocho! You mentioned the dutch bucket might be available for sale in the US - would that be on the Hydroland website or elsewhere? Can't wait to give this a shot here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains!

Amazing! I'm buying more multi buckets. I love them. I have broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage growing in them currently and they are huge. Keep the videos coming, Hoocho. Much love, Michelle.

14:28 You could set up a venturi oxygenator at the end feeding back to the reservoir. That would jack up the oxygenation to its absolute maximum (probably not needed with the current setup but it seems like an interesting experiment). Also, it would prevent algae growth. It would be fairly easy to 3D print or make a DIY contraption. [Referrencing: DIY Venturi - Rob Bob's Backyard Farm]

Great Video again Hoocho. Can you do a rain gutter wicking version using these buckets, and allow the plants to get to full harvest. It doesnt matter what plants you use, just so you can show them at maturity and the time it took to get there. I assume you are using Diamond Special T for your nutrient

Thanks thobert1 (and Hoocho) I wanted to say all of that...and you have saved me the bother. Similar to RobBob: honest about success/failure; explains the tin tacks of the build; and, all the while, he gives you an education by sharing his thought process. There I go bothering after all, when thobert has already said it better.

I love your channel. The topics you choose are of great interest to me, and I really appreciate your experimental attitude and willingness to bring us your results unfiltered. I also really appreciate your positive attitude and sense of humor. I do have one piece of feedback, and it may be a little bit too specific, but it is a pet peeve of mine. Many KZbinrs have gotten into the habit of using the word "utilize" when they mean use. I don't know if originally people thought it sounded more educated or something, but it seems like it has become more of a habit, especially in channels like yours that are information rich. In this particular video there was a stretch where "utilize" was used three times back to back in sentences, which makes sense as your are providing such useful information. It just doesn't make sense to apply utilize with a shorter, more simple and efficient word, use, is perfectly fine. Anyway, sorry for my little grammatical rant. I really do appreciate you and your channel, and I always look forward to your content.

Hello Hoocho, Did you consider using a 70mm round pipe ?

I like your Hooch buckets but would like to see a wick version.
Cut bottom out of net cup for wicks
Use root mat in bucket over wicks to stop or hinder roots in pipe.
 Normal media to suit.

 Give that some thought.

Cheers & keep on Hydroponicing !

One thing I would really love to see is a ground level return system. Love the idea of the main res and gravity feed to "local" res which then gets pumped like this video, but I have a hardscape. So I cant bury the secondary res. What I need is an all ground level system(s) that has a collector that pumps back to the main res. In theory easy enough, but not seen it done with DIY or make it yourself parts.

I've been running a similar setup and I can't find a lettuce that grows with the tom solution. You should do a side-by-side with bigger buckets and use pea pebbles vs clay balls, especially if you run the pump 24h.

very interesting...for fungal issues, make a water with ash....in one liter of water place about half of cup of ash...let sit for 24 hours and use 2 ounces per gallon of water...apply early or late during the day...start with 2 ounces and see what works...if no change pump 3 ounces and go from there. also remove a lot of the foliage....that helps a lot. I was having issues with early blite...and i was able to save the tomatoes...

That’s amazing how the plants continued to grow in a Dutch bucket and it didn’t strangle itself, I wonder when the roots were growing did you notice if a lot of hydroton pebbles were being pushed out of the buckets? I find it quite interesting that it keeps the channel from becoming plugged with roots and to me seems like the perfect solution! I’m wondering if there was some sort of cover over the Dutch bucket if you could simply put your plant in it without the need of any hydroton pebbles? I know I grow sweet peppers in a deep water method and I don’t have anything in the bucket except the roots although in that case I do have air circulating through air stones. I think it could be totally do able to not have any media in the Dutch bucket as long as their was something to hold the base or stem of the plant in the bucket with a lid of something? Maybe something that had two sections so it fit over the bucket with a left and right side? Look forward to more of your experiments I’m always amazed at the results!!❤️🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦🍁

My first thought with the 19 mm pipe being to tall was scooping 4mm deep trench four fingers wide to remain tool-less, but I suppose no everyone has the pipe directly on the ground.

One problem, the roots will grow into the drain eventually causing the bucket to over-flow. Continuous flow always plug drains. The printed Dutch bucket adaptor seemed to work the best. Did the plant do well in that one, It definitely grew roots.

I had good success with my 14 bucket dutch bucket system this last growing season. I grew tomatoes that just come up from last year so they were kinda like a large tommy toe. Also some cucumbers and mini capsicum and chilies in between I made the same mistake of putting them too close together. Even though i started with 4 tomato plants more came up ended up with 8 tomato plants. It was a bit of a mess. Ran the pump nearly dry a few times because I think the tomatoes on those really hot days just drink it all. I thought I had a leak. although there was one bucket was clogged which may have caused an overflow To regulate the flow i used lots of those tiny taps on each bucket worked well. I need to find some cheaper nutrient if im going to keep going. Using general hydroponics powdered. Might give it a break next year, but well see what happens in spring. Looking forward to what crazy experiments you come up with next!

I find depending on what you are growing you don’t need to use anywhere near the amount of nutrients that the packages call for. I use the bare minimum when it comes to growing healthy greens and the same is true with the flowering plants like tomatoes and sweet peppers although I do use the flora-bloom for them and I don’t use it at all for the greenery.

@@leannekenyoung Yeah I noticed that too. three scoops maybe twice a week in a half sized blue barrel nutrient tank. Even at times it was on straight water sometimes for days. Its good quality nutrient. I would like to make my own there is videos about how to. much cheaper. It can be stressful having to check water levels is all when you have lots of other things going on. Im not giving up just having a break

0:35 - Can you talk about the roots when they're like that in a hydro setup? Most of the time this would be considered "root-bound" and not good for the plant. Apologies in advance if you've talked about in a previous video. It's clear the plants are healthy but my wife keeps asking. So, did the Dutch buckets work as effectively as the NFT buckets? Trying to see the benefit of one over the other in this example.

Gotta say, without seeing how well both options produced fruit, it's hard see which is superior. The dutch bucket ones looked realy pot-bound, siggesting that the buckets are really not big enough for tomatoes. The ones that had their roots running down the pipe clearly had more root area available, but raise that question of whether indeterminate tomatoes are really suited to NFT.
