Side connecters. Another idea would be to run strapping up the side from the bottom, and put d ring at top. The top portion can be sewn on and rivet below. That would leave the strap loose from the bottom of the bag to the point of sewing on the d ring. You could put rivets all of the way down that strap for decoration or Chicago screws would be easier.

Side connectors. I would run the connecter horizontal, d ring in the middle and close both ends with stitching as soon as the exterior bag is sewn. They can also be riveted. This will not impact the drop in lining at all. Or put the connectors in the side seam of the exterior.
