My then dancing partner changed his steps in order to not trip over the petticoat. "Toes down" was the rule. We made it without accidents and without ruining the dress. :) Fun but terrifying. I admire your dedication!

this is not a perfectionist problem, this is seeing problems and resolving them to make the finished item much more amazing. First I saw the first version of this petticoat, I was like "Well it will look much better with the rest of the dress on...hopefully" but now I actually see Cinderella dress in full motion

That is the dress of a lifetime. Of course the original was made with a team of sewists and you have done this all by yourself. Not easily done by oneself. I am glad that you shared all the ups and downs. That is reality!! A truly magnificent job!!

Tacking layers together is something I've seen done with ballet tutus, to prevent the layers from separating out or becoming too fluffy. Called swing catches I think.

But I think she wanted the layers to separate more? Like the flounces kinda "stuck together" when she was dancing in the beginning, but at the end, due to the added frills and flounces, the skirt opened up a lot more, like a rose

I believe the term is called french tacks. A chain of thread similar to a belt loop. You can make them as long or short as needed to achieve the effect you need. Lots of earlier dresses have them to hold a lining in place without the constraint of tacking the layers together thus allowing movement but not total shifting as she was experiencing. I noticed them used on wedding gowns to hold the layers together but still allow movement.

@@deadbybee I think you're misunderstanding. The goal is to control the movement of the petticoat not open it more. That involves *how* each layer flows and opens up. Tacking it down in certain areas prevent the frills from compressing together in a spin so each layer can only go so far. Each individual rose petal opens up less the closer to the center it is; so the closer to the hoop skirt, the more tightly tacked down the skirt layers will be.

@@bigdadbeefsticks I agree, watching the Films dance I thought there is no way the dress and petticoat weren't flying up away from the hoop more than shown, unless of course the closest layers are attached to it somehow. As you mentioned even just a few well-placed tacks will make a huge difference and is common in hiding structural garments and aid an elegant movement none weighted outerwear.

I made my daughter's prom gown I have made many civil war era gowns I have even made a couple of Disney princess gowns for my granddaughter. I have never nor will I ever make Cinderella's ball gown. I bow to you. You deserve a medal. What a fantastic job!!!

Ive recreated garments from movies and productions before, and one thing to help with that urge of working until everything is absolutely perfect is remembering that they had whole teams of experts making the garment, while you are creating the whole thing yourself! It seriously looks so stunning!

As I child, I always asked what they meant by “April showers bring May flowers” because it just snows in April and there’s never flowers in May! Bella Mae: I am going throw this petticoat in the washing machine. Me: The madwoman. I don't think I have ever been more stressed by a wash cycle. That being said, awesome video. I am really glad you got to make the changes you wanted to the petticoat and that it is closer to the concept you had in your head. When the petticoat was up on the table, it looked like a modern art installation. Also, don't feel bad about tripping on the dress while dancing. After all, they had to make shorter versions for the movie to accommodate the running and dancing scenes and the actors still ended up wrecking the hems by stepping on them.

It’s so beautiful!! Hard work but it makes me want to make my granddaughter a similar dress. She does in fact want a Cinderella dress and I’ve seen what you get at the store and it’s not nearly as nice as a homemade one would be. I have a brand new sewing machine in the dining room waiting for me to go to town! I only took sewing in high school but I’ve made a few costumes when my kids were little. I think the tacking technique sounds like a great idea! From what I've gleaned from various making-of ballet costume videos I've watched, tutus are made this way too, with the different layers tacked to each other - not so tightly as to completely impede movement, but enough to keep things under control and falling back into place as the ballerina moves.

The movement flows much better now. This is quite a project you've taken on and you are doing a great job. You have gotten a lot done! You improved the shape/angle of the skirt, and it moves so well now! It is so much closer to the film dress. I love all the things you came up with to solve the problems. Adding more flounces higher up really worked. Attaching/tacking some layers also seems to help the movement. The top layer looks so lovely with the crystals!

Oh my gosh I can't believe you remade that entire thing. But I get it! If I had spent that much money and time on a project, I would want to work a little extra and make it perfect (or near perfect, I guess). I feel you on the perfectionist issue. I have spent so many hours doing ridiculous things to perfectly usable garments because they aren't right FOR ME. But sometimes you just have to stop and say, it's good enough. Also, I can't remember. Have you weighed the petticoat yet? It's always so wild to me how something so light and airy looking can be so deceptively heavy.

No matter how hard you try to convince yourself that is not perfect you are utterly wrong, it is perfect, it looks perfect, the way it moves, twirls and flares is simple perfect and mesmerizing, and I'm being as objective as a sagittarius can be, it also looks better on the inside than the original dress sooo there's that... You've wrangled it into submission! The dress must serve your needs, and behave. Letting people know that perfection is not absolute, despite all effort, is a good thing. The footage of you twirling was so satisfying. Beautifully flowing and moving. It really looks like it is working. One also wonders how much Hollywood flim-flam was carried out in the making of the movie scenes of dancing. Possibly there was much more tripping and getting tangled up than the final film dance showed. Saying all that, I think I was relieved to hear that this will be your last Cinderella version. To much of a good thing can still be just too much!

Don't be so hard on yourself! You are doing a wonderful job and you comparing yourself to a movie, where everything is made up and have to look perfect. You are enough! Care about yourself, you are worth it

I feel you’re pain as a perfectionist! And I would not be able take this advice myself but remember that you are one human person. The original dress had how many people working on it? Plus remember magic of cinema, they can just cut every shot where the hoops were exposed

I loved watching this! I'm a seamstress myself and I do cosplay in my spare time! This is a reality of cosplay that you won't see a lot of issues with your costume until you wear it! Re making things is part of every creative's journey!
