I have this notion in my head that silk is incredibly hard to care for and it is ruined if you so much as look at it funny. Watching you wash, scrunch up, boil, and iron such delicate looking fabric made me genuinely nervous. Also, I am now 80% certain that you have magic powers. Witchcraft is the only logical explanation for how that fabric turned out looking so good.
@BellaMaesDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Haha! I am no longer afraid of silk! Though I can say, I'd never try doing this to a taffeta....for some reason, the more transparent silks I'm not too afraid of putting to the test!
@erinhowett36303 жыл бұрын
I have a silk scarf that I needed advice on cleaning, so I called my stepmother. My father happened to be in the room and when I mentioned how nervous I was to treat it too harshly, he reminded me that silk is the fabric of choice for parachutes because it's really, really strong.
@2020Dumpsterfire3 жыл бұрын
Some silks have specific sizing added that makes it unwashable because washing it would remove the sizing which might make it loose shine or affect the drape and texture of the fabric. Sizing can tend to make fabric stiffer so I think really transparent and flowy silks are less likely to have a size on them.

I'm just so amazed at how much work you put into this dress! ehehe, i loved your intro! i'm kind of confused, though, because i have it in my head that silk is suuuuper prone to be immediately ruined when it has any sort of contact with fluids?
@BellaMaesDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: yes, silk deteriorates faster once it has contact with water (plus, it will leave water stains.) But it doesn't automatically deteriorate, it just won't last as long as silk that hasn't spent time in water. At least, that's my understanding. So 1) yes, it isn't the best. 2) using the right techniques helps, plus there are certain types of silk that I would never dye; such as a duchess satin, or even taffetas. 3) you just gotta be brave!
@yoyotraveller13743 жыл бұрын
Before drycleaning existed people washed silk in water all the time. It needs to be handled a lot more carefully than just tossing it in your washing machine and dryer though, which is why many modern silk garments are marked "dry clean only". In reality, many silk garments are just fine being carefully hand washed in gentle detergent and laid flat to dry. One caveat - lots of commercially dyed silks aren't very color fast and will run when wetted.

This will definitely be useful when dyeing fabric! I never attempted to dye fabric, because I am scared to ruin it. But now that I have seen how you do it, I think I’ll give it a try! Did you add any more layers with tulle frills to the petticoat like you said you were gonna do? Have a nice day!!! Also I was wondering, couldn’t you dye also the Yumissima fabric to make it more of that acquaish tilt color?
@BellaMaesDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Yay! It's a fun thing to do! Not yet, but I plan to (though I won't be adding tulle frills, I'll be using the leftover of my flounces...I decided I don't want any tulle in this petticoat.) And no to dying the yumissima! To scared to do that one!

that is some incredibly dreamy colored silk! i'm wondering, though, the edges of your panels kind of look like they took a beating. would it be wise to serge the edges before hand or cut the panels slightly larger than the right size? i know that YOU have this down to an art and know what to do, but you didn't mention anything about the edges. i'm sure we will see more about that during construction. thanks for the post and detailed info about the dye.
