I'm a native Detroit-er now living in Florida. I miss home and Belle Isle is very dear to my heart. Images of Scott Fountain, the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon and MacArthur Bridge bring wonderful memories of my family traditions that included Belle Isle. And lets not forget the Good Humor Ice Cream cart :-)! Thank you so much for sharing this video. I found it on KZbin and have saved the link so that I can re-watch each time I want to "visit" home.

As a native Detroiter, I recall going to Belle Isle with my cousins. It was around 1949. All I recall is that my cousin was in a row boat in a pond and I was hanging onto the boat. I did not know how to swim at the time and I was up to my neck in seaweed at around age 5. I screamed and screamed and my cousin would not let me into the boat. It was very traumatic. Later memories of Belle Isle were more plesant.

I grew up in Detroit, and I remember going to Belle Isle to see the beautiful Scott Fountain after dark with my parents and seeing the water turn different colors. All throughout my life I visited the Island and saw it when the property had gone into major disrepair. I remember, at one time, going on a horse drawn carriage ride with my then, husband. We felt sorry for the horse having to give rides to people all day. I am very happy the Isle has been restored! I plan to visit as soon as possible.

Although I now live in Atlanta, I still miss Detroit's Belle Isle... Having worked at Jefferson Chevrolet, I occasionally used the island for test drives. It's nice to see the beauty returning... Thinking back and remembering my parents taking pictures of me, (their terrified son) sitting on the lap of that huge green "James Scott" statue, and sitting on the rails of the James Scott Memorial Fountain. I hope the fountain still changes colors at night. I fondly remember my dad taking me canoeing as a little boy, and the many picnics that we had on the island.

I spent so much time at Belle Isle growing up...lived in Indian Village so it was close. Not many cities can say they have a place that nice.

I'm so glad to hear this news. I grew up in Detroit and Belle Isle was one of my "go to" spots with my family and then my friends. We used to ride our bikes from the east side to Belle isle and back, a full day's fun. Loved the small zoo they had there and rising through the woods to see the deer and loved spending time on the beach there. The conservatory and aquarium were favorite spots on the island as well. It might have stayed that way if not for the bigotry brought by mayor Coleman Young. Again, I am delighted that island is coming back. It's a wonderful place.

Folklore tells us that Belle Isle was once known as Hog Island. It was infested with Michigan’s rather small rattlesnake. Hogs, which were typically unaffected by the bite, were introduced to feed on the snakes. The snake population was eventually eliminated. Local folks often pronounce Belle Isle as “Blyle,” a corruption which has become popular over the years.

À lot of the places mentioned at the end were always a part of the park. The acquarium, the Conservatory, the Yacht Club. There was also a golf course (in the 60’s), nature trails, horseback riding, beaches, the Casino. These were not mentioned. The video didn’t highlight, the Belle Isle Zoo or the Giant Slide, both of which were great attractions! Also, a lot of the litter on the park came from suburbanites hanging out pre/post the annual fireworks show. It took days to clean up the park. While I am glad to see progress we should never gloss over our history to make it look like Belle Isle had no attractions before the state took over.

That would ruin the island and it's beautiful, tranquil atmosphere. That's why they have that crap EDM festival downtown at Hart Plaza.
