Please, dear ladies, try not “hating” either this character or that in this superb classic tale. The very fascination with it’s story line is directly attributed to the flawed character of a certain Miss Emma! It is her journey in maturity, her reflections and realizations of her very own lack of judgments that keeps this story ever so current and relevant to the present day viewers. After all, we are all pour little lambs going daily astray with only life teaching us along our stumbling ways.

Well I love her then again I love disliking her sometimes. Her journey is so satisfying. Especially since Jane Austen wrote her to be unlikable I won't feel bad about it since that just means her writing is great. I love Emma and this adaptation 🥰

What a man Mr. Knightley, handsome and charismatic and the way he flips his cane to the grass…🤗🤗🤗

Such a lovely version of “Emma”. They both had such a sweet courtship.... even if they were unaware of it.

I love Emma cause I feel like she's the most realistic character like yes she has growth moments and she does grow as a character but like she does still shine through with these moments that show her age- like the pettiness of taking down the portrait of Harriet or still being upset at Frank because even though she didn't like him he didn't know that. I feel like a lot of Austen's heroines are wise beyond their years which is amazing but also it's nice to see a person who does act their age. Also not just Emma but most of the characters- Frank for being "independent" but also is doing absolutely nothing but living off his aunt's money, Jane for continuing this on and off again relationship and one second she's in love the next second she's leaving the county, Harriet literally falling in "love" with three separate men that are so interchangeable that Emma literally thinks it's someone else and it's totally plausible

I know emma deserved to be told off for how she treated Miss Bates at Box Hill, but OTOH, I did also kind of feel for her when she and Knightley meet (I assume for the first time after the incident, since Knightley thinks that she is attached to Frank and thinks that her behavior was because of his influence over her, so I assume that he avoided her), the shame is evident in her voice and her body language, she wont even look him in the eye! Luckily he sees this and puts her mind at ease by letting her know he's forgiven her. The second part, when they meet on the road, I always found it very funny that two people who are such old friends and have known each other for as long as Knightley and Emma have, and have always got on just fine are suddenly awkward and can barely talk to one another once they acknowledge that they love each other. Gah and the look of pain when she tells him "Then dont speak it! dont commit yourself to say something that might injure us both!" She thinks he is he is going to tell her that he loves her friend, and what he hears is "I dont love you" and the look of pain on his face is evident ... ouch!

I really like this "Emma" version, but Hollywood seems to repeat itself constantly ... Brad Pitt is a new version of Robert Redford ... Georg Clooney a new version of Gary Grant ... and Gwyneth Paltrow a new version of Grace Kelley ... and so on ...

Of all the screen adaptations of "Emma", I'm really disliking this Mrs. Weston's reaction to Emma's disapproval of Frank. In all the other adaptations, Mrs. Weston never apologizes for Frank's conduct, never dismisses Emma's disapproval of Frank, nor does she make Emma pretend to be happy just to soothe her foolish husband's bruised ego. It's as though Emma's feelings aren't valid, but Mr. Weston's feelings are.

Toni Collette is so obnoxious in this role. Were there no suitable English actresses for either of these lead parts? Gwyneth is great tho.

Tony was perfect, Gwyneth was a bad choice. If I could replace her with Kate Beckinsale, this version wiyld be perfect
@anyviolet4 жыл бұрын
@@msinvincible2000 I agree - Beckinsale was so perfect in Much Ado about Nothing too. And we (apparently) have Harvey Weinstein to thank for the existing casting.

@@anyviolet I'm pretty sure Palthrow slept with him, because she has very little talent yet she made several films for Miramax...

@@msinvincible2000 we'll never know for sure, but you're right about the little talent, I think less than anyone in this movie IMO. Can't believe people are running Toni Collette down in the comments though - she's awesome in anything I've seen her in.

@@anyviolet People maybe dislike the fact that Toni Collette seems fat in this film (any normal person would look fat next to skeleton Palthrow, or maybe they have no idea what good acting is.(PS: Palthrow did 6 films with Miramax in 3 years, that's a lot...)
