Garai's portrayal is a time traveling modern Emma created to make her more likable to people who wouldn't like 'Austen's Emma': she's too nice, too childish, and too unladylike in her manners for someone of Emma's rank and context.

I feel Romola and Jonny Lee were perfect casting, they had such chemistry, there are times you believe they really are in love, I would love to see them in something else together, but that might spoil the illusion, I feel they are the best Emma and Knightley ever, I can see them having a long happy marriage, and a fantastic love life, probably having as many children as his brother and her sister, I have never felt that about any other pairing, and I have seen every version since 1972, as Emma has always been my favourite Austen novel, and Emma and Knightley my favourite couple much more than Elizabeth and Darcy, he was lowering his standards and she only fell in love with him when she saw how rich he actually was, she admits to Jane that she fell in love with him when she saw his house, that put me off her there and then, Emma and Knightley are equals, mind you Ann and Wentworth are a close second.

I love the scene where Knightly says, the only married woman he could ever allow to invite who she wished to Donwell would be Mrs Knightley then looks at Emma, that certainly put Mrs Elton in her place, so many times he virtually tells Emma, but she just doesn't realise, that superior man who she can fall in love with she told Harriet about, has always been right there in front of her all the time.

It was not underrated till that dreadful 2020 version, made for the modern audience, with the dreadful arrogant dominant Emma who stayed that way, turned knightley into a wimp, with all the crying, made it seem as if he was giving up Donwell would be dependent on Emma, If the woke writer had actually bothered to read the book she would have known, he would still be master of Donwell and that he had actually been taking care of Heartfield for years as her Father was not capable, so really he had always been looking after Emma and her Father.

Yes the costumes where far more inline with what a country lady of the time would wear than the Hollywood version, notice her sister who lives in London wore slightly more fashionable dresses, but still understated, as she is a lady, Mrs Elton on the other hand did not come from the same level of society, she is new money so overdressed, feel that is why she didn't like Emma because Emma and Knightley are both from landed gentry old families Old money established.

No hate to Anya Taylor-Joy, who is one of my favorite actresses, but this adaptation of Emma is so much better. I found that the 2020 Anderson-esque adaptation was too stiff to translate the humor, here in this adaptation we can see Emma clearly being so childish and silly like the coddled little girl she is inside, and it's loads of fun to watch.

2020 version is much better. This one is way to modern is does not feel like something from its time period. Plus it was the only version that that took in consideration that Emma is a comedy.
@jwyatt63111 ай бұрын
@@manuellarodrigues4386 That is an interesting perspective. To me, the 2020 version is a parody with the production team trying to be just too clever. I can't see where the 2009 version could be considered too modern. The book has comedic elements but is much more, for example, in Jane Austen's acute observations of human behaviour. To me, the 2009 adaptation is a fine all-round production in that it is faithful to the substance of the book but uses the medium of film to retell and in parts enhance the story. It DOES contain comedic moments, but not of the laughing uncontrollably variety.
