Absolutely fantastic trip! The scenery is breathtaking at times and I made a point of following the route on Google maps on another window. So, in every little town the train stopped I paused it while the train was in the station and I took a virtual Google street exploration, a bit like being there! It's great because it opens up for me new destinations in Europe on my next trip there, places that I never visited before. Thank You so much for sharing your trips with the Y.T. crowd. Much appreciated.

Fantastic video. I have driven these this route both ways in Microsoft Train Simulator, and your video lets me see the actually scenery every step of the way. Plus, the entire nine minutes through the tunnel. Amazing feat of engineering over 130 years ago. Some of the most fascinating engineering solutions, the many spiral tunnels, on both sides of the Gotthard.

Absolutely wonderful cab ride. One of the best I've seen anywhere. Stunning scenery ! The Northern Italians and Swiss must be one of luckiest people in the world to live in such beautiful surroundings... And everything so *clean.* I know this from experience, having travelled the Bernese Oberland by train - all the way up to Kleiner Scheideg! . 54:30 - Gotthard Tunnel - Train goes into 'high warp' - fantastic. // *The Gotthard Tunnel* is a 15.003-kilometre-long railway tunnel and forms the summit of the Gotthard Railway in Switzerland. It connects Göschenen with Airolo and was the first tunnel through the Saint-Gotthard Massif in order to bypass the St Gotthard Pass. It is built as one double-track, standard gauge tunnel. At it's highest point, the tunnel reaches -1,106 m (3,629 ft). Between1882 and 2000 the Gotthard Tunnel was the longest tunnel in the world. //wiki refers.

Theres only one other video I could find that was made over 6 years ago, but no other drivers view videos exist. Maybe it’s because that the tunnel crosses into two different countries? 🙂

I recommend a book by C.G. Ethelston, a british civil engineer, titled: "Notes of a visit to the works of the St. Gothard Railway", published in 1881. It's probably available through Swiss libraries, but I found mine at the Harvard Bookstore. It's a fascinating account of the conditions at the time the Gotthard railroad was being built. I hope Swiss authorities will keep the line open for tourists, local traffic and as an alternate in case the new tunnel develops any problems. The original route is a testament to man's ingenuity, and entrepreneurship. Thanks for this great video. Hope to see the ride down the hill to Erstfeld very soon.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds good read! I'm keenly awaiting the decision about what they will do with the old route. I hope it will be used for freight in the future, especially now that they're talking about doubling the passenger train frequency.
