Nice Video if I knew you guys were tapping trees I would’ve come over and given Shane a little help and guidance on running lines. There’s a few things I see that should be done differently. One is longer drop lines they should be a minimum of 24” one tap per drop line and no more than 15 taps per lateral line. I used to do maple syrup with a old guy that I was going to buy from him it had 3000 taps on pipe lines that ran to his sugar house. I helped him two years but then I was diagnosed with cancer and that ended that business. He ended up selling it to another guy that I have become good friends with and have helped him out some. He now has expanded it to about 15 thousand taps and still adding more taps. If you guys would like to see his operation let me know I would be more than happy to take you guys on a tour of his maple operation
@shanebell95896 ай бұрын
Interesting, I don’t think I’ve heard of needing to limit taps per lateral line, but ya this is def a rough learning curve
@keithmcallister49176 ай бұрын
@@shanebell9589 I would be more than happy to come and give you some pointers on installing sap line. The thing is if you have too many taps on a line it will actually slow down your sap flow especially when it runs really well.

Strange weather here in southern Ontario daytime temps 69°F and 61°F today and tomorrow and overnight temps of 37°F & 46°F. So temperatures are not even falling below freezing for two days. That would probably have people using the buckets to deal with the sap overflowing. The temperatures don't get below freezing until Thursday and that only at 31°F. Just wondering with climate change affecting us here in Ontario how long the Maple Syrup industry will survive in Ontario. At least the southern part of Ontario. We have communities here in Ontario that have a yearly Maple Syrup Festival to raise money for there community. Keep up your great work on the videos. Lots of different topics and coverage. Thank You

Shane - that was interesting. Seen many people tap for maple syrup but not like that. was this your idea or did you get it from someone else. I wasn’t sure if you mentioned it in the video. Every time I see it done, after it gets reduced it seems much thinner in consistency than what you buy in the store. I wonder does the flavor and sweetness intensify the more you reduce it?

I know a lot of people/companies online systems, not really sure the finer details, but I’m more the do some research and trial and error the rest, so we’re on the trial and error portion of sap collection.and yes, the more you boil it down/ reduce it, the sweeter it gets.

We like to be busy :) we don’t sell any. This is all just for our personal use, and gifts for family. It’s the same with our honey. We are not a licensed bee keeper. We just do it for personal use 😊

I've seen videos of commercial harvesting where they used a vacuum pump above the collection tank to keep a pressure gradient instead of depending on gravity. I wonder how much difference that makes.
@shanebell95896 ай бұрын
Vacuum makes a huge difference I assume, you are supposed to get a siphon effect from the lines, but we will see I suppose
@BellsFarming6 ай бұрын
I bet it’s makes a big difference! We really haven’t had much sap this year.

Very interesting, so how much syrup did you end up with?
@BellsFarming6 ай бұрын
I think we had around 70 gals. Something like that. Still working on finishing what we collected. It’s really muddy in that last field, so we will have to see what is back there when we can drive without getting stuck :)
@shanebell95896 ай бұрын
Looks like we ended up with right around a gal and a half on our first boil. Not too bad at all

Thank you! Yes we know we are total beginners. Shane is a doer! I love that about him, he always just dives into things and says he will figure it out as he goes. We will watch some more experienced syrup makers. 💚

That maple syrup where I live cost a fortune lol. How much did you get last year and can you spare any? 😉😄

Hahah it’s at lot of money here too! And sorry I think I just ran out 😜
@tdmills17666 ай бұрын
Total noob question. Do you need to unplug the tubes from time to time? I’d think the syrup would plug them up.
@matkremzar54746 ай бұрын
saps like water
@BellsFarming6 ай бұрын
The tree sap is like water. It does not get stuck in the lines. It will even freeze in the barrels and buckets when it’s below freezing.
@jamesgaul10226 ай бұрын
Are you worried that wildlife might run through the woods and knock down the blue lines?
