That's quite a bit of water! Is the flooding from rain or from snow melt? Here in the Southern Cape (S.Africa, Western Cape) we've had extensive flooding this past week (2-7 June), brought on by a combination of a cold front and a cut-off low. Major routes have been affected and towns have been cut off. People had to be helicoptered out of Meiringspoort (between Beaufort West and Oudtshoorn) and inland from Cape Agulhas what's left of roads seems to go through the middle of a huge lake. In Cape Town this week we had almost as much rain as in the first five months of the year. We had floods in the Western Cape Province last year as well. In Citrusdal (well named) some of the orchards are under water. One farmer may lose a whole orchard of two-year-old trees. Tere's a crocodile farm near the famous Cango Caves that was 4metres under water - this in the dry Klein Karoo!

First off I'm glad y'all didn't receive to much damage and that y'all were safe. secondly has the river ever flooded like that since you've been farming it? I would be curious if the sediment left behind when the water recedes gives you greater yield per acre during your next harvest. I'm sure there could be some damage left to deal with like leveling. But do you think there will be a thicker layer of fertile soil left because of the organic matter and minerals in it? 🤷♂ I've never farmed by a river that floods but seeing it in the news like you are showing has always made me curious to that question.
@BellsFarming9 ай бұрын
The guys tell me it will bring in good minerals. There will be a little compaction from the water. But yes they believe that flooding is what goes this crop land the rich soil it has. There was a flood like this 35 years ago. That affected about the same amount of crop land. I cannot say if it produce better yields or not. Thanks for all the great questions! 💚
