I don't think you can overstate how impactful the whole "Xbox series" and "Xbox One X" Brandon confusion was. Which one is new? Which one do I need? Is the series X different than the X? Consumer confusion does not help sales. Especially when your competitor is as easy as "5 is bigger than 4, so you know it's the new one" Microsoft saw how much money Nintendo lost on the Wii U, and said "Hold my microbrew IPA"...

You're not wrong either. The whole point of a console is the fact it is not on customer to optimise the game, the developer curates it according to the hardware specs it's not complicated, anyone can pick up a game, any developer can dive in knowing they only have to spec for one system. That concept is shot in the ass when you intentionally create a weaker system that has to be curated for (this goes for the Pro as well not to say it's weaker but it's just another set of specs no-one wants to adapt more time to) . Indeed Nintendo seem to be the only ones who understand the point of a console... accessibility, you start up a game and job done.

@@TheLastSane1 That's fair, but it would've painted Nintendo into a corner (and anyone younger than 35 wouldn't have the nostalgia button to press, which considering Nintendo's audience skews younger isn't the best strategy.) They now have an option to make a Switch 3, Switch 4, etc. for as long as the brand is working for them; beyond a Super Switch, where would they have been able to go with it that still clearly defined which direction the brand was going? They ran into that problem with the 3DS.

The reason the hardware sales are declining is because of the lack of compelling games to play. There is no point in buying a ps5 pro when you'll be playing older games on it anyway. This is all the fault of big gaming companies and poor oversight on microsoft and Sony. When i look at even last gens libraries i have on both systems, they are 10 times what i have on current gen. Nintendo at least understands that it's not about the power but the games. Hence, why it is selling loads. I've got more Nintendo games now than the past two generations of xbox and ps combined. If every game studio is taking 4 to 8 years to make 1 game to utilize the hardware, then you'll get 2 games from them max per generation. The rest will be filler indie games where only a small percent are masterpieces. I buy physical as much as i can, but gamers are pushing the industry into the direction of online only and streaming services. They just go where the money leads them. Yes, they are making dumb decisions, but so are gamers. You've been trading ownership and great single-player games for live service and convenience. Theres no winners here at the end.

Microsoft then butthurt decided they would come in and compete with Sony in the console gaming market originally stating that all Microsoft games would work across their console and with PCs.. For the consumer, I think one of the worst things about switching to a full-library subscription is we lose the ability to vote with our wallets. Currently, if a game doesn't sell, it's very clear that it's a problem. It means the publisher lost money. If you're just buying a subscription, and they put out a game that no one plays, there probably aren't a lot of people who would make their choice whether to subscribe based on that game, so they really hardly lose any money off it. If they consistently put out garbage, eventually people would cancel their subscriptions, but there may be a few years' lag there, and it isn't so blatantly obvious what the issue was.

I strongly disagree. Look at that game, iirc, High on Life or something? They had very strong engagement on GamePass, but then closed the studio nontheless, why? Most likely because that game was maybe installed by like 5 million different people, but when it was only played for more than 1 hour by just 500k, then for more than 5 hours by just 50k... you suddenly realize that the game is a problem no matter how much the the media is praising it, or how many awards it gets. When you look at game subs succes, you look at total hours played in that particular month, not how many people played the game. But how many hours was it played for... that month, the month after, etc. IF my game is "played" by 10 million players in the first month, but each player only played 30 minutes on average = 570 years of gametime in total for that month. BUUUT if in total for the entire catalogue game for that month players played some 500.000 years of gametime... I think one could easily say that spending 100 million on 1 game that was only played for 0.1% of total gametime during its first month and the nothing is a TERRIBLE MISTAKE. No?

It's not feasible for a lot of games. Putting them out on gamepass day 1 just loses them a lot of money in the long run. Xbox is doing it at the moment to increase their market size. This is really just Switch sales, assuming no dedicated Handheld e.g. DS/3DS were included. Those also released as massive net growth for Nintendo, but don't fit into those given years. 2004 for the DS and 2011 for the 3DS. So a whole year prior to those demarcations.

I think one of the unspoken upshots about the sharp decline in high-power console sales vs stuff like the Switch and 3DS is how Nintendo (and maybe perversely, Apple/Google, etc, if you want to include total game revenue and mobile/tablet gaming) is the only major platform maker still truly holding down the "video games as a toy for little kids" market. After Sony and Microsoft used DVD playing to sell higher-powered consoles 25 years ago they both largely started pursuing "average console buyers" as either adults buying a home entertainment device for themselves or as parents buying a home entertainment device for the whole family. I'm not saying Nintendo doesn't do that (lord knows the Wii was marketed to everyone and the Switch and older handhelds have always been popular with adults) as well, but when I think of the console that a parent would buy specifically for a child, or two or three children, under the age of ten, it's not a $600 PlayStation 5. It's not even a $300 Xbox Series S. One of the things that gets lost in conversations comparing Switch sales to other consoles (or 3DS sales to other consoles for that matter) is that tons of little kids have Switches and Switch Lites. Tons of little kids had 3DSs and 2DSs, etc. And that's before you even talk about the millions of kids who primarily game on a tablet or phone.

The thing about these corporations is that they still want to put all their eggs in one basket and reach that infinite growth number. Two things. 1.) I will always want single player stories/ adventures. That’s where the art is and I will always prefer physical media. And companies are only chasing the online digital live service. That’s what they’re investing in and they’re gonna fail. Because people aren’t a monolith and even people that enjoy playing online games want to switch it up from time to time. (Also people want to own the things they buy stfu Ubisoft) 2.) there is no such thing as infinite growth. It’s unsustainable. And unrealistic. Companies doing everything they can to keep up with that illusion (like laying off their work force en mass) is going to bite them back hard. Because that’s talent lost. Talent that sometimes you can’t get back because they get burnt out and just leave the industry all together. No matter how much you try and replace that with AI. It’s not gonna work. It’s not the same. And that’s why these companies lose and what the end of the day they will never understand. Cause companies are greedy machines like that. And that’s how capitalism works. It needs to expand. And once you can’t expand anymore it eats itself away.
@SioxerNikita
@SioxerNikita 19 сағат бұрын
1) What you want is completely and utterly irrelevant to the overall market. The vast majority of customers don't really care about physical media, otherwise, Steam would never have grown. It is far more comfortable to have 500 games on Steam, than having to dedicate major amounts of space for physical games that will inevitably break. 2) Yeah, and no. It is unsustainable, but the rules of being a stock company exists, so they have to try for the stockholders. It's called fiscal responsibility, and it is stockholders that pushes towards that. The thing is though, Microsoft has been one of the larger companies that haven't pushed for infinite growth itself. They have in many if not most of their markets reached saturation. XBox was simply dying for them, so they are expanding their licenses into a different space, which makes sense. Beyond that, firing their staff en masse, has nothing to do with "infinite growth". Companies that continuesly grow end up with massive staffs, and very rarely fire. It's when things start going bad, things go in an unexpected route, etc. Also, the people leaving are most of the time not "talent", they are just another code monkey, that is easily replaceable by the 1000s standing in line right behind them. Way too many people have the ability to program and want to get into the game making industry. The same thing is true for artists... It's an oversaturated industry. "And that’s why these companies lose and what the end of the day they will never understand. Cause companies are greedy machines like that. And that’s how capitalism works. It needs to expand. And once you can’t expand anymore it eats itself away." Actually not how "Capitalism" works. It is how AMERICAN Capitalism works. Frankly, you don't seem to understand anything about the capitalism you are talking about. Plenty of super large scale companies that have reached saturation are not eating themselves, or trying to push weird innovation, or similar, to continuesly grow. They are plenty aware of where they are in the market, how to keep competing, and how to improve... and they are plenty aware there is no room to do any major growth, and any growth is going to be reliant on other markets increasing first.

@@SioxerNikita At least on 2), you're fairly wrong. For one, when infinite growth is brought up, it's not talking about actual company growth through investments, such as employing more staff, building out and improving company infrastructure, etc. No, it's talking about the infinite growth on a financial graph. Shareholders want infinite money growth, but that's literally unsustainable. If shareholders wanted further growth of the company, not solely financially, it doesn't make sense why the games they'd release would be trying to rinse consumers of money so aggressively, instead of producing great quality games that stand on their own. It aligns with the growing love for indie darling games, since what the big companies are making is not what the majority of consumers want. The main belief on how they accomplish infinite growth is by laying off a ton of staff, not only trainee young devs but also firing or forcing veteran staff to leave, to bring in young less-experienced but lower salaried staff instead. It's not just 'code monkeys', it's staff that are actually experienced, veterans in the company and field, which also means being higher payed, and more influential which causes issues with upper/middle management. With so much micromanaged aggressive cost cutting, it makes sense why the aaa games are suffering with the good staff being kicked out and inexperienced devs getting left with the same responsibilities. I'm not sure on concrete evidence to back this stuff up, but it would line up with why so many companies layed off so much staff in recent years, lower quality games and why there's more and more microtransactions, gacha and life service elements in aaa games. At the same time that's happening, there's the growing love and attention on the indie space, with higher quality and more and more beloved games made indie/on small budgets. If indie games made by nobodies can become some of the best selling games each year and win a ton of awards, over massive teams working on big games, there's clearly something going wrong with one to allow for the other to thrive. Big industries do not simply allow small nobodies to succeed on purpose.
@SeanSMST
@SeanSMST 17 сағат бұрын
@@damon6086 Sure every product is copyrighted and so someone owns the actual content, but when you buy physical you own that copy. If you buy any game digitally, it can literally be taken off the store any time, and unless you have the game installed, you may not be able to download again. If it's live service, even having it installed doesn't mean you can play it again. Not only in direct playability is physical media preservation important. It also allows people access to modify their game, access game files, understand how their games work, etc. For example, I learned how mario kart on the wii worked by modding the hell out of it. Like what filenames the music tracks have to be called, how checkpoints work, etc. These things help you understand games in ways not possible otherwise.
@SioxerNikita
@SioxerNikita 17 сағат бұрын
@SeanSMST I know it is talking about financial growth on a financial graph, and everything I said stands. And when firing people, it is primarily random "code monkeys". The "good staff" often leaves for better pay elsewhere, what veterans tends to do these days. And no what lines up with the lay offs, is the growth from Covid, they expected to continue, gave a dip. Microtransactions is because it is profitable, gacha, the same, although there aren't a crazy uptick in those. There is a limited customer base. Live service is because it is automatic DRM, they have more control over their license, and consumers have a weird concept in their head where they need a game to constantly update, or it is not a good game. Indie hasn't really increased in amount, nor quality. It is mostly the same. A space of gaming that has had steady growth with 90% (if not more) of games not even earning enough back to pay for the development. The few indie games that become best sellers are mostly a question of luck. Undertale coupd easily have been a niche unknown rpg... FNAF could have been an obscure niche horror game. Frankly both likely would have been that if not for being picked up by streamers at the right time. And you also can't compare passion products made by nobodies, who put in more time and effort, than a team who is primarily employees. There'll always be a difference in productivity. The super passion nobodies, also often ruin (or close to) their lives, because of all the attention and time they put into the project, vs. caring for themselves. And big industries do not allow? Big industries don't "allow" anything, because they can't control who buys what. It's always been like that... small little studios doing a better product than a larger one...

The same goes for all my friends, most people aren't streamers to play 10 games at the same time. Nor do we have the time to blow through games in a couple of days. What ends up happening is I play one or two games in a 2 to 3 month period, and it is very likely that some of the ones I want to play aren't even on gamepass. Thus, paying the subscription year round is useless for me and for specific periods, the cost isn't worth it as I won't be able to play the game when it ends.If it cost 10 euros a month and if I could get a discount for paying the entire year in advance, taking it down to 8, then it would be good value compared to the price of games in the market.

Apparently the game's estimated sales is below 500k. The game was obviously designed to push GamePass and is likely where all of its sales are going, which is fine for MS because they own the IP, but the point here is you can't run a business for free and this video essentially demonstrates that by showing how little money the Xbox division is actually making. Yeah, I'm also gonna switch to a PC - a handheld PC that is. I'm already quite happy with my Steam Deck. But it desperately needs more power to smoothly run current, or even future games, especially on a TV. And if there won't be any physical media anyway, what's the point of a console anymore?! I'm oldschool like that. Most games I own on my PS4 /Series X are on disc. If I'm making space for a console, I'm also making space for the gaming media for that console. Those two components just belong together. Plus I get an actual physical value for what I pay for. But the moment discs become irrelevant, so do the stationary consoles for me. I'll move completely to a compact handheld PC that will be sitting somewhere on a shelf or in a drawer and all digital purchases will be made on discounts only from then on. Because some 1's and 0's somewhere on a server just don't have the same value as a real product. Therefore everything above 50€ is a ripoff. But if those mofos actually decide to hike up those prices to 100€, they can get fked. I'll go full indie or just stick to my old games and won't participate in the next Gen gaming at all, a.k.a. I'll semi-quit. That greedy disgraceful 💩 show I don't want no part in.

It has nothing to do with that. They showed who they truly are, and always will be just back to biding their time before trying again in the future, with the Xbox One launch. Every sensible person has avoided them like a plague since. I never had a Sony console before that, went to Xbox from Dreamcast and loved it. The 360 was an insane success, going from a tiny sales amount with the Xbox to nearly outselling the PS3. They thought they had done enough to start the "extend" part of their usual tactic (embrace, extend with things that start to build a monopoly, then extinguish all competition) and they misjudged how close they were to being able to do it. Everyone has known what they would do if they ever started winning ever since. For all the (90% nonsense) complaints about Sony, Microsoft would have destroyed gaming as we know it had they ever fully succeeded.

On Steam and PC you don't own your games if your locked out of your steam account or it gets banned deleted you lose access to those games. I'm PC mostly but have A PS2, PS3, PS5 Xbox 360 because I collect games for those systems I loved on disc then I own those games physically

@Tenz2346g the difference is with steam is that you're still able to download it as long as the game is still in your library, but unfortunately yeah technically you don't own it (GoG makes it so you technically do own it, but not many good games are put on GoG)

4:37 Game Pass is doing so well is because Steam is the exact same thing, you don't own the game, you own the license. The only difference is curation and duration.

well renting games is a bit different to owning a license. also the gaming market will crash the moment Valve makes big moves removing stuff.

I don't like how Gamepass had 2 cancel subscription pages. I thought I cancelled it as I got a page like 'You've cancelled your subscription', but it was a confirmation page which I needed to click another accept button which i didn't see.

@@Grayson950815 In their financial report late 2024, sony cited the game to have exceeded expectations with over 1.5 million sales in 2 months. For comparison, Elden Ring in its first three months sold around 1.3 million copies on Playstation, according to numbers released by FromSoftware. Its no god of war of course, but for being a new IP it sold very well, and you would have to try and argue that Elden Ring was a flop to uphold your statement.
