Solving a noise issue coming from the back of the bike!

You would think the belt would be adjusted properly at the factory... crazy! I have read this is a common and unfortunate issue on new bikes. An over tight belt will cause problems in other areas.
@ITFZone Жыл бұрын
Really not sure, the belt was really tight and something I should have checked when I first got it home. Will see if it stretches at all as I get more miles on it but clearly it was out of spec. Happy that all of the rear axle noise is gone!

I noticed the same sound on mine the other day, at first i thought it was the brakes but no difference in sound when i applied the brakes so thanks for posting this!!!

You are welcome! Others are reporting the belt tension out of spec. For sure it cured all noises from the back of the bike, nothing has returned since making the adjustment and the bike is easier to roll around in neutral.

Thank you for your video, I recently purchased an Ultra Classic and hear this noisy rubbing sound especially in 3rd great and wondered if it was the transmission. The belt does seem super tight, I have it going to the shop for new pipes, so I am going to have them check into it.

Belt adjustments are so important for Harley's and can make a noticeable difference in the clutch and overall quality of the ride!

thank you for the video, I have whistling noise when I go over 80

Mechanical or wind sounding? Generally a gap in the body work, windshield mount. Noises suck, one of the hardest things to solve for!

Very informative & great video. Makes me want to rethink purchasing this bike as this kind of work is beyond my scope/patience.

I would not be concerned about it, I am a true geek and often love taking my motorcycles apart more than riding them. BUT, any motorcycle has items to pay attention to and belt tension is one of those items for a Harley. However any independent or HD dealer can help you here.

Do you read a the top of the belt or the bottom? Thank you great video
@riosce5 ай бұрын
Or at the top of the belt tension gauge?

Whatever is easier to see. We are looking for total deflation in the belt so whatever works.

I had the exact same noise. It was driving me crazy. The noise actually stopped at about 900 miles. I guess it just needed to stretch
@ITFZone Жыл бұрын
Likely so, the belt does stretch. The belt should be checked at every service but a good idea to check it more often. It is more of a pain to now have to lift the bike up in the air to do so. You now need a lift vs just the tool.

so did u do this with back tire suspended or on ground ?
@ITFZoneАй бұрын
Suspended so the tire was free to rotate. The procedure is a bit different with these new bikes.

Mine does same and have been ashamed to admit. This goes on the list of things. 😡

I suspect most if not all of the new CVO's have overtighten drive belts. I continue to have no unwanted sounds from the back of the bike and it really does move around nicer in neutral. Winter is quickly approaching so time for maintenance!

My 24 is doing the same thing…I’m gonna have to loosen that belt
@ITFZone3 ай бұрын
Yes I think if you get enough miles on the bike it may stretch but why live with the noise! Mine has been quiet ever since this adjustment.
@Pinozcyclezandridez3 ай бұрын
@@ITFZone it didn’t start doing it until I put my tour pack on and gave my 140lb daughter a ride…guess the weight of everything might have tightened the belt.

Just wondering, why not make the dealer fix it? I had the same thing on a new bike, a Softail. The service manager said they would fix it at the 1k. I said nope, its not right, its a new bike, fix it now. Had to go to the GM but he had to fix it. That day too.
@ITFZone Жыл бұрын
Really just because I enjoy the maintenance as much as the riding and its content for the channel. But you are correct any good dealer would take care of it on the spot.

Mine was doing the same thing. I removed the plastic gauge piece and the noise is gone.
@ITFZone11 ай бұрын
Hey Jeremy, you are referring to the plastic belt guard? If so it was rubbing so you can just heat that up a bit and pull it away from the belt but I would make sure the belt is tracking correctly. May need to loosen the axle nut and push the tire forward to make sure both alignment tabs on the axle are up against the tabs on the swing arm. Appreciate your post!

I think its just a shadow casting off the tire molding nubs. But def good to double check.

I never challenge having a dealer handle your service. But I encourage all to be familiar with their own motorcycles.
@kurtruppenthal95062 ай бұрын
Why? So they can screw it up? Clearly he is capable and much more meticulous than any hack at the dealer
