I like your videos. thank you for taking the time to do it. had the same issue with the exact same HAZET 1/4 ratchet. only much older one. it was very frustrating. took me three separate attempts to get it to work. here's what worked for me: clamp the ratchet to the table for starters. I used a small non-magnetic Flathead screwdriver. I wrapped the tip of the screwdriver with small piece of insulating tape - inside out so sticky side out. stick the bearing ball to the tip of the screwdriver and push it against the spring. this is the point when things come flying, so heads up. while keeping the pressure with the screwdriver, put in the selector part and then insert the gear. if you reach that point, your home free. SLOWLY pull back the screwdriver while keeping a finger on it, so the ball wont shoot out . close the whole assembly with the screws and only then insert the selector pin. good luck! maybe make a video about it!

Thanks for the tips. I might end up actually modifying the ratchet to make it easier for future serviceability. The ball bearing popped out as soon as I took the cover off which is the first time that has ever happened to me.

S***-O* used to sell a thin tool to retain ball & spring for reassembly. There's a picture of it at the bottom of this thread: club.craftsman.com/projects/clean-out-the-gunk Maybe you can recreate one from thin spring steel or a wire type one that is also mentioned and pictured in the thread above.

I’d love to get my hands on that ratchet. It would be a great edition to my collection of vintage ratchets!!!!!

I don't think that the mechanism is new, and I don't think that ratchet is worn. It's just been rolling around in toolboxes for 70+ years. That's why the finish is gone. It's still very usable.

The irregularity of the bore is because of the tool used to make it. First they drilled the center through, and the used a shaft that has the drilled diameter with a hardened blade attached to it, stickling out the radius they want to bore. The process is fast and easy in mass production but not extremely accurate. the size of the "ripples" you can see is the cutting depth of the tool. You can see that they removed nearly half a mm every rotation. So the rough finish is no surprise. And it's not a problem because the hardened gear will not eide on this surfaces.

Interesting, that's for the insight.

I thought small rocks had gotten inside and made scratches until I saw comments from a machinist who seemed to explain everything.

A couple tips for your other ratchet. Get a big, clear plastic bag. Put your hands and the ratchet in to bag to assemble the ratchet. Any pieces that go flying should get caught in the bag. Also, get the Snap-on ratchet assembly tool. It's under $1 and available on their website. It's part # Spp744

Hey for that Snap-On part, do you know the size of the holes in the ends of that piece? The ball bearing for that tiny Hazet ratchet is only 2mm in diameter (about 1/16").

German Tool Reviews I can't seem to find mine. It has two different hole sizes. If you post on Garage Journal I'm sure someone can tell you.

German Tool Reviews I just found it. The smaller hole is only 1.4mm in diameter, by my measurement, so looks to me like it might work for you.

I don’t know if the trademark and patent style changed between 1918 and 1933, but in German history that is considered a period of a republic between the second and third empires. (2nd 1871-1918, 3rd 1933-1945). The first was the medieval Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. Probably it was too much trouble to change everything in 1918, as Germany was extremely poor at that time. DRG is the normal patent mark, and DRGA is “patent pending,” which can help date items if you can find when the patent was actually granted.

I got the exact same 1/4" Hazet ratchet and totally failed to repair it. I tried to get that mechanism back in there for about an hour. Had to give up. I contacted Hazet too. They couldn't help me either.

Thanks for this. I had no intention of actually taking it apart fully all I did is take the cover off and when I did the ball popped right out. I think there may be a design flaw in the paw that makes that 1/4" ratchet UN-serviceable. They must have some sort of jig they use to assemble it that isn't available to the public.

I've heard of of guys successfully replacing the inner parts of the ratchet. I think it always included a big amount of grease to hold the ball. Normally the ball is held in place by the lever mechanism. I had to use a pin punch to remove the lever in order to get to the ball. Here in Germany Hazet basically told me that the ratchet has to be placed upright and the ball has to pe pressed down against the spring with a screwdriver. Then the lever has to be put in. I don't know how they do it. But somehow it has to work. Otherwise they wouldn't sell replacement kits.

German Tool Reviews I agree with HVBasti I had an older craftsman ratchet. I had to put it in a vise use very thin flat head screwdriver to hold ball and spring down slide in paw halfway then the lever from the back of the ratchet and push the paw the rest of the way in and remove screwdriver. I don’t know how the hazet is made but I couldn’t push the paw in all the way and get the lever in or put the lever in and get the paw in. Definitely took the fun right out of taking that one apart
