As a guy who isnt a car guy but a tech guy that builds software, I really enjoy the new screens. For me buying a car means getting a good looking, well performing car, BUT I absolutely need my tech inside. The old one works and I wouldn't say looks bad, but the new one is more functional (to me as a software guy) especially as the screens on both driver side and console side become more integrated. I like the long tablet look because I nitpick at the software UI. To me, that weighs in a bit more when buying.

Honestly I'm not a big fan of iDrive 8 I wish they kept the same setup as they had for 7 and just updated it because that was probably BMW's best interior design and they integrated both tech and analog features so well iDrive 8 is a complete opposite of that and sadly many auto makers are going down that same route I really hope they go back to the analog design
@mihnealazar7039
@mihnealazar7039 Жыл бұрын
They won't go back. The thing is previous "digital cockpits" like idrive 7 were nothing more than "let's replicate a analog cockpit with a display" which isn't all that helpful and doesn't make that much of a difference. On these new gen cars the idea is to actually embed the digital world and take advantage of it as is, not just use a display to replicate the physical world. That's why you see this separation trend where displays are floating and have interfaces that are actually and not just "prints" of analog dials.

What stops BMW from maintaining the analog buttons for important things like climate control etc? Also it still featured the classic memory buttons to programm shortcuts in the iDrive system which in my opinion was always one of the best features of iDrive since the CiC. The LCI interior just looks really bland, and besides looks I think from a usability and tactile aspect the old one is definitely better.

I work as a BMW Product Genius at my local dealership and even I have to say I prefer the older design, the seamless integration with the rest of the car a well as the ease of use of the iDrive 7 UI just made it a superior product in my opinion, iDrive 8 is more advanced but the way the screen is fitted in the dashboard seems like a bit of an afterthought in all honesty, but BMW will go where the market is and that seems to be 'more screens' so it is what it is at the end of the day

For me, the lack of physical/analogue buttons is the biggest turnoff. Every little option like A/C or seat ventilation is put in the iDrive system, and i absolutely HATE this trend! The satisfying feeling of pushing a button is gone, with the disadvantage of having fingerprints all over your display. Dont get me wrong, displays and carplay is cool, but is it appropriate in a flagship M-Car? I think that was so so much better in the '21 Model, and it freaks me out that this is the future, while no one is complaining about this technique of just lowering production costs.

With the new model W205 they started to place tablets on the dash. Having large, vibrant displays is cool but it’s better to have the instrument display embedded into the frame behind the wheel and with overlapping elements so it doesn’t feel like a square, which is actually outdated in terms of displays - look at an iPhone or MacBook, curved edges. It would be a bit better it it was just one large display but the fact it’s separated by just a black area and these may not be OLED so it just looks bad and so 2010-2015 phone era. A big infotainment display isn’t bad but either make it one large widescreen or keep them very separate and embedded.

BMW’s tech ergonomics design is horrible. The thing with touch screens is that it works with Apple’s approach of smartphones (which they were the first one to get rid of buttons) because the main info is on the screen. For a car, the main info the user is getting is from the road, not the screens. Things like climate controls should have PHYSICAL buttons/knobs because they offer PHYSICAL feedback to us. Touch screens offer VISUAL feedbacks, which competes with our attention when driving. Don’t get me wrong, I love tech, I love screens, I love futuristic designs. But one shouldn’t sacrifice the purpose of function for aesthetics only. Many things can be in screens, but many things cannot be as well, such as climate control, or anything you need to often tweak while driving. Simplicity is great only if it doesn’t impede with functions, of which aspects like frequency of usage, while driving or not, should be considered.

Now, BMW is worse, even though they started doing this later, they are getting rid of buttons faster than Mercedes and Audi, whereas Mercedes and Audi would wait for the GLE, GLS, GLA, GLB, A4, A5, Q5, and Q3 to get redesigned from the ground up. Meanwhile, BMW is doing it faster because they're getting rid of buttons at the mid cycle refresh, and in fact, they did an "emergency refresh" on the 2 series coupe for the sake of removing ergonomics.

@@essidamine3434 I dont mean to offend you with this, but just because you can't see an already big screen on the old design doesn't mean a even bigger screen is beter for everyone. I see Apple Carplay just fine out of my ~7-8in screen on my e46. There are panels, contours, lines shaped around the screens that were done with purpose. And taking all that out and slapping a big screen on it is objectively lazy for the sake of looking "modern". Look at a C8 corvette interior for an extreme example of a purposely designed dash and imagine how utterly shit it would look to take all that out and put in a single screen. Sounds like you like your big screens though so, doubt you'll see the point.

I've owned over 8 BMWs over the years (and currently drive an M850), I think this is coming to an end. BMW has managed to destroy their great exterior designs and now facing challenges integrating/coping with modern interior designs. BMW used to be aggressive but subtle from the front which provided a feel of "confidence" when looking at the car that I used to appreciate. Now they are trying very hard in the front and getting too lazy moving to the back. Very cold design language inside the car. I think in the wake of the Korean designs and moving to electric which closes the gap between German engineering superiority and the rest of the world, BMW and others may not survive. I haven't owned a non-german car in over 25 years and that's what I believe so imagine others who are not even biased to German engineering.

Obviously the previous interior is better, by far. The new one is incredibly mediocre. It’s just a rectangle. And thr SIZE and SHAPE of the grill is wrong. The fact that others are making bigger grills doesn’t make this one any less hideous.

IMO, they are taking (the wrong) steps to share more parts in the interior between the petrol and EV models.

for me, there should be an equilibrium between analog and digital, even switching gauges from analog to digital(especially in non performance cars) is just wrong, also there should be an equilibrium in the performance it's self, I mean it's called performance driving, not calculated driving, I'd like to see manufacturers improve the manual instead of automaize everything, like OK AWD is the way to go, but don't deliberately make the car go on rails, give some oversteer and a bit of understeer, make us feel the car, even in the steering it's self, make me feel the road please USE HYDRO STEERING, than as of design.. I MEAN I'm always the first to say it's better to look for functionality first and, I prefer a car that actually does a good work on the CX graphic, BUT please don't make it a ghost 😭

I do not agree with your opinion regarding the integration of the idrive8. idrive8 and the integration thereof in BMW's interiors is architectural in nature.

BMW needs to change the pig nose tot he Vorsteiner GTS-V front bumber replacement. It looks so much better. BMW is using the curve displays in all or most of their cars to save money and charge people more money...lol

I absolutely hate this tablet trend. It almost seems extremely lazy to not integrate the screens properly into the dash.

I believe this is becoming a trend due to android auto and apple carplay implementing their own gauge cluster that will take over the entire display

One of the reasons I believe they did the front end that way is because it’s an Easter egg that they will electrify and hybridize the m4/m3 as it matches the i4 front end approach.
