Honestly, the backgrounds are the most tragic thing about this entire show. Almost every background in the show has been painstakingly and beautifully drawn, even the ones that are cloaked in black. You just never get to properly see that art in a lot of scenes and that sucks a lot for the artists who drew them. While I very much disagree with a lot of other arguments made in the video, I absolutely wish that the backgrounds weren't so shafted.

Yeah, it feels like a huge insult to the background artists. I mean you spent weeks drawing trees, warehouses and what not and then in the final product they are covered by darkness.

3 minutes in and I've had this exact conversation with people regarding the Kenobi series. I remember watching the first episode of Alien Force growing up and I had the thought "Wait. When did Ben give up the watch?" He was older but he felt alien to me as a character. I was obsessed with the OG show as a kid and I legitimately thought I missed some crucial episode(s) or a movie special that explained this change in personality

You made a good point in saying the people who probably felt the most alienated from Alien Force were fans of the OG series because I really loved the series as a kid, and when Alien Force came around when I was a teenager I tried to watch it but stopped after, like, 6 episodes because it felt like a completely different show to me. That being said, great job on this and your other Ben 10 videos. Maybe one day you’ll also look into Generator Rex, I remember that show having a crossover with Ben 10 Alien Force at one point? Would love to hear your opinion on that!

Being from South Africa this show played at night around 8pm and so the lack of sound and background made sense to my 14 year old younger self as I sat on the couch alone in the living room, because oddly enough, it created a calmness and a chance to follow the dialogue. And also their occasional trips to out of space made that feeling stick because space is also quiet and calm. I really loved this show

Honestly it feels like all his complaints stem from the very basic premise of a timeskip, uh, skipping and having big changes that get explained. I dont know why he expected them to be exposited right away. The whole point is to give us these big character flips that intrigue and eventually build to a resounding conclusion. I feel if he got what he wanted he would just complain that it feels weird to skip and then immediately explain everything. Doesnt feel like he's giving the sequel a chance. Also yeah saying she wants to "kiss boys", is a perfectly normal thing for a cooped up middle class teenager to say as her freedom is getting more and more explored. Seems Lowart is disappointed that Gwen is more normal in a series that follows the original Ben 10 where she was essentially forced to pick up the mature slack compared to Ben.

The thing is, the change is so big that they aren't even the same characters but more mature. Young justice did a 5-year time skip yet i could still see the personality and characters of season 1 in season 2 unlike Ben 10. I remember almost hating this show when i was 9 years old because of different it was.

@@celestialsoldier622 honestly I can use YJ as an example that I feel is done worse. In S1 of YJ we see these character flaws and personal hang ups that last a season, which is long enough for us to actually care. But then s2 resolves these issues and creates new issue out of them that are obscured by the tonal shift and new characters crammed into the season. It resolves what was cared about in S1 and forces new character flaws into the mix. Whereas, by comparison, Ben 10 isnt solving all these flaws outside of our view, it just has all of the lessons learned in the original actually stick since it's no longer such a strict episodic formula where they have to recycle old lessons. The only real mystery is Ben doesnt have the Omnitrix on. That's it. I'd say enough is satisfyingly carried over while there is some mystery. It's not like YJ where it just begs us to not worry about all the set up in S1 anymore.

Kiss boys was one of the things she said, she basically wants a normal life along with helping others and I don't see anything wrong with that. If she does the trip then she has to give up a life of maybe 50+ years. and giving up her body, which is a big commitment so makes sense to be hesitant or want a normal life in comparison especially for a teenager.

@@mindriguniverse2429 I'm not talking about character arcs, Young Justice dropped the ball there. I'm talking about being able to recognize their perosnlties/characters as being older versions. Ben Gwen and Kevin are completely different characters. Simply saying he learned his lessons (Off screen since none of then stuck in OG.) Doesn't explain the 180-character flips. They stripped Ben and Gwen all of their personality making them boring mature adults with nothing to learn. If you didn't watch OG you wouldn't know Ben and Gwen use to argue or even banter. Maturing doesn't mean you lose the fun part of your character. Nighting acted like an older Robin. I'd say the cast got the Ms Martian personality change where they aren't even close to what they were before.

I see your point but I disagree. Of course, timeskips are supposed to have things change in between but the changes shouldnt be so drastic that the characters feel like totally different people. Ben grew up and got more mature, but in my opinion, he was "developed" so much offscreen that he no longer resembles the same Ben but more mature. Gwen is much cooler in this series, but without her having to deal with ben's antics and the constant bickering, she's left without much of a personality. I'm glad that her and Ben have a better relationship now and that they aren't arguing, but I wish they gave gwen more to replace those trates. I wouldn't necessarily expect all of these changes to be immediately explained, but none of them really were ever.

Ok Kevin's powers "changing" is just more of him using the original premise plus using the whole thing where he turned himself into copies of Ben's aliens after absorbing power from the Omnitrix. The way I see it, he's still using his original power but in a very creative way on his part

I did have a big issue with Gwen too. With this new characterization it feels like Ben should be trusting of Kevin, not Gwen. Ben and Kevin started as friends, Kevin lives out the life that a younger Ben always wished for (cool car, attractive guy, fun alien tech, crazy adventures, no school). Gwen should be the one who doesn't trust Kev, and it would make the romance better overall if she turned around to him gradually and he earned her trust before making a move.

@@strifer2781 and in Jotaro and Joseph's case, It's understandable bc they have more years to change than Ben. Jotaro changed in 10 years and his in his late 20s so naturally he is a matured adult. But even so, he still retains his traits of who he is like the "shuttup annoying btch yare yare" trait but toned down of course. In Joseph's case, He has lived through 50 years so It's natural for him to change he's an old man now. But the same with Jotaro, Joseph is still your tricky fun little prankster despite the years. In Ben's case, he changed a whole lot in 5 years. Even he's traits and flaws he had that made him who he is were gone to the point we don't even know him anymore. It'll make much more sense if he is Ben 10,000 (like taking off the omnitrix and wants to live a normal life would be more believable) That's why I understand why OG Ben 10 fans feels alienated throughout AF

They actually explain in Omniverse that the reason why Ben took off the Omnitrix was because of how he lost the alien that made him feel the most heroic, Feedback. After Malware destroyed Feedback, it crushed Ben and he would then take off the Omnitrix. But most of this was due to guilt, in how he was once again cocky and immature using the Omnitrix and let his guard down, causing Feedbacks death. So the guilt of his immaturity as well as the grief led to Ben to take off the Omnitrix. He took it off because he felt he was too immature to be heroic.... finally learning a lesson XD

It's like the creators were aware of the problems with the original characters, but over-corrected and sanded off everything that made them unique until they were dull, generic do-gooders. Also, "They just grew up" is NOT a good explanation for why characters act differently after a time skip, because what changes you when you grow up is LIFE EXPERIENCES, which we don't get to see, not just hormones or whatever. And some may argue they're saving that for later, but the characters, again, are just too bland.

@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 that’s why I wrote “ you can come up with any reason “ of course I’m not saying that just because he grew up, he changed, we can see that Max influenced him so much, and he talked to ben to let the watch go, he told him he deserves a normal life, eventually he understood that, especially there were no real danger in those 5 years, with school life, parents etc he chose a normal life. ben ( younger version) remove all of his bad qualities you get the teenager version, and Max lessons over the years removed them, you just need to connect the dots. Ben being a bart and immature is what people liked, and the most famous thing about him. Honestly I like both versions, so I’m fine.

Honestly, most of your problems come from Time skip which are almost all solved (or atleast attempted to solve) in Ben 10: Omniverse. They have tons of flashbacks to set up Kevin's and Ben's personality change, the change in how the Plumber's operate, and Kevin's relationship with Gwen, etc.

"no explanation" it's literally a 5 year time skip, your main issue was that characters don't develop and are being brought back to being the same characters over and over again. You think Kevin wouldn't be able to get out of the null void for 5 years? Spoiler, they will show you how he escaped it. In Omniverse (fourth series) they will even show you what happend in between Classic and AF so you shouldn't complain about how they didn't show you everything. Edit: Fish Man's death will make more sense in the later seasons where Kevin's backstory gets revealed. The only complaint i would really agree with is the dark backgrounds. 12:10 He doesn't just "suddenly" flips, it's his characters being more mature, he can't believe his Grandpa could really be dead, isn't that what you wanted from Ben? So he cares about his family and friends? Just finished watching the video, it's great that in the end you will be covering the series without comparing it to Classic.

Its great to have a timeskip with a bit of mystery, but what Lowart says does make sense. Particularly in Ben's case, he did a full 180 on his personality. I understand this is meant to show him maturing but this much of a contrast seems unnatural for someone like Ben, especially without much explanation in the first season. As for the stories behind how they got there, really? You have to wait 2 whole series ahead to find out how they got from classic to AF? Consider that the writers at the time couldn't possibly have planned so far ahead as to predict that they'd have not only a 3rd but a 4th series and still didn't think to give more information. Ultimately in terms of the storyline, the timeskip and questions not yet being answered is fine, I do wish that they'd have given the information more gradually throughout the first couple seasons though instead of filling in the blanks later when they remembered there was an issue.

I love Classic Ben 10. When it comes to Alien Force, I like it, but it definitely isn't as good. Ultimate Alien was better, but that had a lot of problems. But Omniverse was easily the best one and fully realized the potential of the franchise.

I loved Ben10 growing up and my mum bought me the game. It was the best time. I also had the watch. XLR8 was my favourite alien. I just didnt enjoy Kevin and Gwens romance, it felt forced, would have been better as a slow burn. I actually liked the bromance of Kevin and Ben more haha.

Honestly, you hit the nail on the head. I was a huge fan of the OG Ben 10 and the beginning of Alien Force really put me off. I grew to like it on it's own merits, but it felt like a messy transition and that was a vibe of kind of continued through the whole show. And some things are explained retroactively, but I found it so unbelievable that Ben and Gwen trusted Kevin (the kid who tried to murder them on multiple occasions) so fast and moreover that Gwen had a crush on him so fast. It feels like we really missed some crucial plot points to get here (again, retroactively explained but still). The stilted presentation also didn't help much in really making this seem like a totally different franchise. That said, I'm glad you're willing to go into this show with an open mind even if you personally didn't care much for OG. I hope this is more your cup of tea.

The first episode made the light shades and shadows very well but most of the time the, don't us---- forgotten the light... The mood is good but it was a bad choice... Many scenes should have more light effects especially with fire and Gwen magic light... Sad I like they made Kevin the grampa role but as you said, the transition was bad... I guess they made like that due to the trend of Marvel and DC doing this in that time.... Even today with Tom Holland Spider Man that only now they announced that will have a tv series showing his origins(maybe it is out already but I don't know)... There is Young Justice... Some Batman shows......

I still prefer Omniverse. Yes, it takes a while to jumpstart its plot, but once it gets going, *it gets going* . There are so many scenes that I've never forgotten (like the version of Ben without the Omnitrix, that was done in such an amazing way it stuck with a lot of people). However, because the art style is different (which I adore, btw), many people decided to not even give it a chance (also Gwen and Kevin are out of the picture for most of the time, but Rook is cool). Compared to Omniverse, Alien Force and Ultimate Alien feel a little too slow to me, and in the way that the art style won't allow for the animation to flow as much as the original show or Omniverse, for example. If anything, the only episode I remember clearly from these two shows is the one Ben's Big Chill becomes a mom, and mostly because of how bizarre it was. And maybe the one with the Ultimate version of the aliens trying to kill Ben. Also, Omniverse allowed the characters to be in actual danger, not just "situation where you know they'll be okay", but actual danger. The moment that comes to mind the most on this is when Malware attacks Ben by possessing him, and we see how it affects Ben for some time. That's what I was hoping would be in AF and UA.

As I kid, I actually watched Alien Force via DVD and I just thought there was something wrong with either the CD or the player cuz of how dark it was at times and I could barely see so when I heard you mention the same thing, it started making sense because now that I think of it, 80-90% of Alien Force (at least season 1 if I remember correctly) took place at night and dark rooms, important moments rarely took place in the daytime, and I don't know if that was intentional or coincidental but either way, it didn't really help with the show visually. I mean this is animation and no matter what atmosphere you're trying to portray, it shouldn't as bland for a professional show like this. Shows like Batman the Animated series, Samurai Jack, DC animated movies, etc. all dealt with heavier topics and often times in the night time but that was more of an opportunity to showcase their creativity in environmental design than an excuse to cut back on it.

I actually wanna take a sec to help solve some of the problems your finding with AF really quick. Now first off the visuals, completely agree there, this show was too dark sometimes As far as your problems with the characters like Ben's dramatic change in personality and reasons for taking off the Omnitrix, Kevin's reason for suddenly becoming more tamed from the maniac he was, are actually all things that do get explanations. Only since the entire story of Ben 10 is spread throughout multiple shows, those explanations are also spread throughout the multiple shows Now I don't wanna spoil anything incase you do decide to watch the later shows but think of it this way: Shows have a first season that sets up everything. Then they have a second that expands on it but it can also sometimes have things that are only explained down the line of the series. Then we get a season 3 which answers the questions that weren't answered in season 2. Now with Ben 10 think of each show as a different season to the same series Really hope I explained that clearly, just didn't want ya to think they made all these drastic changes with no rhyme or reason just for the sake of making the show more interesting Anyway, Ben loving your videos going through Ben 10 and can't wait for more!

Honestly. As much as original Ben 10 was one of my favourite cartoons ever - Ben 10 Alien Force SUCKED in my opinion. I watched those cartoons almost as an adult back when they came out and Jeeeesus, everything was better in the original series (4 seasons of original Ben 10). Alien force destroyed Gwen's character, replaced loved aliens with weird designs, ruined Kevin's character and changed his abilities for some reason as if it made sense. Those core downsides mean a lot to me because the damn show was about those three characters. Grown up Ben was relatively alright, I had the most problems with the overall changes to everything else - of course things change as time passes, but they made the changes so forcefully as with Kevin's superpowers. Alien Force was the last series I've watched back then of Ben 10 and even then I didn't watch all of the episodes because they annoyed me so much. My and only true Ben 10 was the original series and it's four seasons and nothing more, sorry not sorry.

Also I did get bothered by the aliens, dn aliens because I miss the villains being just either crazy scientists making strong technology or mystic beings. Now it's just squid aliens. To go from OG to Alien Force without explanation for the changes is annoying, why is that so hard to grasp? I didn't have these problems as a kid because I skipped OG Ben because he's annoying. So I couldn't think "why is he different" all I knew was I liked this version better. Yeah Gwen is a downgrade which sucks but Kevin did make up for it for me honestly. I'm a bigger fan of Generator Rex anyway so I hope he covers that months down the line later after so much BEN & a break.
