I don't think Ben overreacted. In this scene it's implied that since Ben had to pick up a later shift at work, he wouldn't have known that Aunt May walked home alone late at night. Now if I trusted basically my son to pick up my wife but he forgets and she has to walk home, late at night, completely alone when that's obviously a dangerous place for a woman to be, especially in this crime-ridden New York City the film portrays, is it not reasonable to get mad about your wife having to do something that dangerous? Also for the chocolate milk thing, Maguire's Peter indirectly got his uncle killed because he wanted to buy a car and impress a girl. Not 3,000 dollars to help his aunt and uncle when they're not in the best financial place, but to impress a girl. Is that not also a stupid reason for Ben to die? Peter's a teenager, he's gonna do stupid things for stupid reasons, that's why both these events lead to Uncle Ben's death in their respective movies. You're right about the revenge plot being concluded without much emphasis on it. The lack of focus on Connors is also fair but I don't believe it needs to hit you across the head that he's sympathetic. There's a deleted scene with his son that adds to his motivation which would've been nice to see, but it's not in the film so I can't use that as a rebuttal. I definitely don't think this movie's perfect and most of these are valid, but I feel like you could find plot-holes like this in some of the best movies so I don't think it deserves to be called "Amazingly Bad". Also with how good everything else is, the CGI, the acting, the cinematography, the music, the representation of Peter Parker being closer to the Ultimate Comics, I feel like it's just a pretty great movie with a few problems.

I'm sorry but, was with you until 8:20 ...uh...no lol. That part is so stupid in Manga/09. You can call it Winry's 'wisdom' but the conversation basically boils down to "stealing is wrong!" and Paninya immediately changing her tune entirely. It's a very barebones and heavy-handed speech Winry gives, and it makes Paninya's character seem very wishy-washy. It's also dubiously offensive considering Paninya, the only named girl with dark skin in the entire series, is a thief...and gets talked down to/corrected by a white woman. That entire part has always been SUPER dodgy to me and I like that 03 completely removed the stealing aspect and gave her a new reason to befriend Winry. In general I think 03 made Paninya a more likeable and less bland character. That aside you do have valid criticisms with the rest of that episode, I've seen a lot of echoed sentiments, although personally I really like the episode so I'll give some counterarguments: For one, I will say that I don't think Winry was trying to weaponise Ed's trauma. It felt clear to me that the intent was he needed the watch to prove he was a State Alchemist, that made it FUNTIONALLY vital for him to have. It is pretty cruel when you remember what's inside, and they really should've acknowledged it, but...yeah. I don't think it's nearly as damning for Winry as you make it out but I agree it's not a great look for her. I dunno I'm 50/50 on that particular issue. It could've been handled a bit better but I think the idea of "teaching Ed a lesson of the importance of automail" is a good one. She cares about her automail a lot, she cares about her integrity as an engineer and her ability to make great automail. So it's understandable it would hurt to have her feelings played around with like that--she thought that EVERYONE watching just saw how great HER automail is, how great of a mechanic SHE is. But it turns out no, SHE wasn't great, HER automail wasn't great--EDWARD's alchemy was what was great. Everyone that witnessed "her" automail just witnessed a lie. It makes total sense to me that she'd feel a sense of betrayal. Additionally I also just really like that we get to see Winry's pride, how much her automail means to her. We see a lot of positive 03 Winry later with Wrath and when she's teaming up with Sheska, so I don't mind them highlighting a weakness of hers here. And there IS precedent that Winry is prideful of her automail, it's not like this was invented for the episode. With how angry she gets at Ed when she sees it's damaged, or how devastated she is when she finds out Ed is in the hospital due to her forgetting a screw. She assures him she'll make the best automail she can, the confidence/pride in her work has always been part of her character. Her work is important to her and I think it was smart to make automail the focus of the episode. On the other hand, in Manga/09, Winry delivering a baby shows resourcefulness, but aside from Ed's line about her using her hands to create lives (which is more thematic than anything else), it doesn't have much to do with her as a person. Her parents were doctors, Winry isn't. Winry's an automail mechanic. Manga/09 never really has an episode that focuses on that aspect of her, she helps fix and repair and replace Ed's automail a few times but that's about it, it's treated as more of a plot device than a core part of her character. "Why do they visit Winry again? Oh, she needs to fix Ed's automail." "Why does Winry show up in central? Oh, she needs to fix Ed's automail." "How does Winry end up a hostage for Kimblee? Oh, she needs to fix Ed's automail." The focus on her as an automail mechanic in 03 is even better when you consider Conquerer of Shamballa, the reveal that she's been carrying spare automail for Edward this ENTIRE time while not truly knowing if he was even really alive or not. That payoff, that Winry will ALWAYS be there for Ed, as his mechanic, is a really sweet gesture, and I don't think Manga/09 ever comes close to using her work in a meaningful way like that. With that one scene and revelation, 03 retroactively gives all those 'plot device' moments of her fixing his automail purpose. I agree with a lot of the other stuff you said in the video, just that one episode in particular though I really disagreed with your interpretation haha.

Recap is boring but good it is explained that you know it's fun and that it is indeed hard to be bored when there's so many new ideas. It's fantastic to see someone show so much of a positive view like my own on the golden age of the comic. This is the value of the video, to counteract game purists' blind hate out of context. but when all that's happening in the video is recap of the story it's boring, so I had to have the video at high speed because most of it is recap. Yes exactly I don't hold the problems of the comic against it when I know a new idea is always right around the corner and the quality is consistently good at the same time. The quality of WRITING IN GENERAL considering most elements of what writing is is consistently good, for EVERY era until the Mecha Sally part of the comic, though. How is Dulcy being able to know the truth and Snively-vision too weird to accept in a series about a magic blue hedgehog? We already love the series for being weird in the first place. I take this kinda stuff for granted. Good you do see the good in just after issue 50. It was great to see Sonic go on an adventure with Tails, it was fascinating to see what it'd be like after Eggman the tyrant was ousted. And at least the criticisms of post-50 are accurate. Yes the narration is boring, pacing is slower because there's too much dialogue and narration dialogue is bad, but pacing alone doesn't make a story bad. It can sure try but not if everything else is done well. It doesn't change the fact that cool ideas are the POINT and what I look BACK on when remembering the plot, it's still better than stories later in the franchise that have no creativity at all and are still boring. But STC is way better than the post-Ixis before-Robotnik stuff, it doesn't have the dialogue style and narration overload that is boring but still has new ideas constantly, and the charm of a games-environment. Yeah the comic did get better in every way because of Eggman coming back come to think of it. Still the idea of a no Eggman era isn't bad at all it just shouldn't last TOO long without a villain of the same IMPACT, like Eggman had with the main cast being full of life and likability. But the writers very well COULD'VE written the characters just as well when Eggman wasn't around, they just didn't. That's not Eggman's absence's fault. That's theirs. Eggman wasn't even really absent, the heroes just thought he was while really Robo-Robotnik was doing evil things to the surface from a satellite. The main cast could've still had the same likability and usefulness and focus if they were dealing with an openly evil villain. King Max didn't cut it because the characters usually didn't want to do anything against him and his antagonistic acts were just frustrating.

I just watched this compilation FOR THE SECOND TIME 😅 I watched it last year 'cause I really wanted to get into sonic comics (I'm from Brazil, Archie's Sonic wasn't published here) but everyone said it was horrible... I finished all the retrospective (great work btw) but I didn't read much of the comic... But now is my BIRTHDAY and I finally bought some of IDW's Sonic (these are being published here in Brazil), then I remembered you and this video... So I started from issue 160 and read it until issue 200... IN ONE WEEK, my birthday's week (this week), so I watched all the retrospective again 'cause I wanted to remember some of the things you said here and BAM! Way past cool video, way past cool comic (I even found it ALL translated in brazilian portuguese T^T), this is being one of the best birthday's of my life (I'm 28 so there was a bunch of it 😅) and Archie's Sonic and your video has a part on that... Based on the video it looks like the only actual difference between Archie and Game Shadow is he's jarringly expressive in Archie. Game Shadow is kind deep down as well, that's why in Battle, Sonic said he has a heart, and so did Rouge, so ironically Archie knew him even better than those who write/characterize him as just this bitter rival who only cares about his ego. But yeah after reading that Shadow manga which was 99% reminding me of Game Shadow, it looks so wrong to see Shadow looking sad without having half-closed eyes. But having him be unemotional is also boring. I bet in the reboot he was usually inexpressive and unemotional, because why else did I remember him in the reboot for the longest time as so unemotional that he was really boring?

archie megaman goes so hard. I wasn't in the fandom as a kid but my brother did know the game lore, so we'd read the comics together and I remember discussing the characters and their reactions to everything for hours. I remember seeing the notes they used to depict Proto whistling and trying them on a piano, and realizing that yes they did put the actual notes to his jingle in the art and made it feel like so much love was put into the details. Some of the character arcs live in my head rent free so firmly that many years later I catch myself modelling the way my characters think after them. the comic ever

Thank you for not blindly hating the Knuckles Comic like other people do. The criticisms were accurate ones so it was fine, except for one thing. Why do people keep assuming Monk was a kid when he was thrown off the island? He looks nothing like a kid. He looked like an adult the whole time. Is this based off a wiki page of him saying he's older than he looked? Also, the title of the video. No one would be able to tell this was a positive perspective on the comic. Sure it's criticizing it but not compared to how game purists would talk about it. I also never understand why people call the comics nuts or weird when it's a franchise about a magical cartoon hedgehog. We already like the series for being weird.
