Process of getting fat from diet into blood…
-small intestine: fat interacts with bile salts from liver,
then stored in galbladder, which contracts to reduce
gall stones, moving bile into small intestine
-bile separates fat: emulsification
Then fat molecules acted upon by
enzyme called lipase:
-snips off individual fatty acids of
TGs from glycerol backbone, until
-have one fatty acid on backbone
These monoglycerides are small enough to move into
intestine wall, to get absorbed by epithelial cells that
line the intestine, once pulled in, get re-esterified
lumped back together to become TG again
-now packaged up with other fats, cholesterol, lipids,
phospolipids, protein into bigger
molecule: chylomicron
Too big for blood stream, goes into
lymph system
The lymph system carries chylomicrons to thoracic
cavity, then into blood stream…
Now it can be acted on by lipoprotein lipase:
-cut off fatty acids and absorb them into the cell
-these are free fatty acids pulled into cells
At that point, can bind to any type
receptor, like TLR4
Remnant of chylomicron goes to
liver for reprocessing
