Ben Builds - Kitty Hawk FJ-2 Fury - ep. 12

Alright everybody, we are back on our 1/48th scale, FJ-2 Fury by Kitty Hawk and today we are trying our luck at Alcald paint! This is the first time I'll be using this stuff, so it should be interesting to see what I can do.
First off, I did some preliminary experimentation on an old Ki-84 kit and discovered that I really like Alclad! Their paint is super smooth and very thin, which makes airbrushing a dream. They dry relatively fast, are pretty durable and they give a really nice "metal" look to your model. I'm no expert, but I was able to achieve OK results and I am pretty happy with the end product.
I decided to try to add some variation to the metal color by adding a combination of metal colors through utilizing a marble coat. I saw Doog's Models trying something very similar to this idea, so I thought I would take inspiration from Doog and try to play around with a few options.
I ended up layering my initial coat of Alclad's Aircraft Frame Aluminium with a marble coat of Alclad Chrome and then added a very light, blending coat of that same Chrome. My thinking was that it would add some subtle variation to the rather monochromatic metal color and that it might be a bit more interesting to look at. It worked in some areas and didn't work in others, but it was a lot of fun and I think that with more practice, I could use the technique more effectively in the future.
I also used Vallejo Chrome to add in some accent panels and Alclad Jet Exhaust for the area around the guns and the tail cone. Again, it isn't perfect and mistakes were made, but at least we did it.
Honestly, we are finally nearing the end of this build and even though I am still having fun with the project, I will be VERY happy to get this thing finished. After today, I will still need to seal the paint, decal, weather and finally tack on all of the tiny bits. I'm not sure how this will end up, but we'll get there.
