i think it's slightly unfair to expect an even split if someone is in a vastly different financial situation and is ordering cheaper items because of that. if it's a group of coworkers who all make the same amount, then sure, it probably evens out in the end. but as someone who makes less than most of my friends, i don't have a problem asking servers to split the bill by seats. especially after working as a server because i never had any trouble doing that for people. i think tipping well is the most important thing!
@Ashley-yk2ws

As someone from Canada, this is the norm here. We pretty much always split by seat and each pays for what they got. The waiters here usually expect it and will be ready for you to pay that way. I think this is a great way to do it. In Canada paying at a restaurant is so much easier 😅 Although I don’t usually go out with more that 6-8 people.

This is valid, but only if you don't purchase expensive non-alcoholic drinks. If you buy a 15e hipster smoothie, and a fancy 10e tea, and one of the guys in the group only drank two 3 euro beers, then it is of no relevance that he got slightly tipsy from his choice of drink, while you didn't, and you should pay for the drinks like everybody else!

If I'm eating with 4+ people, I tell everyone to split by party. So if it's say 8 people, we can split it in half and everyone can venmo the cardholder sitting closest by them. Easy enough for the server, and everyone can pay for what they ordered.

This whole discussion felt very american tbh gdgfhdjsjdjf Where I'm from it's common for everyone to just get their own bills and it's never an issue. If there's two of us one might pay and the other pays back but bigger parties, we all get separate checks. Also there's no tipping and tax is included in the prices so that makes everything easier as well ig

Honestly I think it’s more of a California problem specifically. Where I’m from in the states, the server will start out by asking groups who’s on what check and it’s no problem. In the LA area, I couldn’t believe how many restaurants just flat out refused to split checks
@gracefoster7587
@gracefoster7587 8 ай бұрын
@@seanparkinson8753same, I’ve been to restaurants with groups of 10+ before and the waiter still asks us if we’re doing separate checks. We’ll each tip more than 20% because they’re dealing with a large group but we’ve never complicated it with repaying someone or figuring out a way to split. Idk either a cali thing or I’m not going to a fancy enough restaurant with lots of people

Same here where I'm from, except usually one person will pay it and the others will pay them back. If we ordered appetizers/drinks to share then we'll split that price evenly. No tipping culture and tax is 10% so it's easy to calculate.

Is splitting the bill an american thing? I live in canada and even if theres like 10 of us we all just pay for our own food? That just seems like common sense? I'm also Canadian and was thinking the exact same thing. I've never split the bill evenly regardless of number of people. Ive never had an experince where a server did not ask the table "together or seperate" (I live in the Midwest). Every group Ive been with always says "seperate", its just so mush easier and inherently fair? The POS services most restaurants use already lets servers divider orders by seat its so trivial to just print seperate. If you do all together you have to sort out everyones venmo, and some people dont have venmo and its such a mess for a problem thats ALREADY SOLVED BY THE POS system. Or keeping track of who came that time so "next time you pay back", its so unnecessarily complicated under the guise of "politeness". Its such a non issue to just pay for yourself for everyone involved, such a red flag other wise 😭

completely agree with the first point although maybe its just because im not american. The fact that americans can receive awful service and still feel pressured to tip is absolulely ridiculous 💀 Like I understand working in the reseraunt industry is super hard and your service is not going to be perfect all of the time, but expecting the customer to tip for bad service is wild to me

@@kira7427 I often travel to the US and I've never found anyone who was able to give me a good answer to why customers should be tipping at restaurants. The "waiters depend on the tips" BS doesn't make any sense and is just a lazy justification. Tipping is based on the idea that the employer shouldn't have to pay workers, essentially because they are worthless. This is just wrong in so many ways. Tipping is practically the result of slavery. Employers should pay their employees for their work and not offload responsibility onto the customers who are already paying! Over 12M people work in restaurants in the US and only 1.3% (2019) of them are union members. If the waiters don't even care I don't see why the customer should be the one giving a f*. I only tip when the service is very nice and the waiter shows he/she cares about your experience. Even if I do my best in my job I still don't get tipped. Picture a PM expecting you to tip him/her (and I know waiters who make better money than a PM).

As someone who doesn't drink and is sober I would rather contribute evenly to the bill because depending on the dynamic of the group I'd like to not stand out even more so than I am by not drinking with the rest of the group. I've been in groups where I can tell people think I'm odd for not drinking with the rest of them so I've covered for everyone in an effort to show them "I'm still cool in other ways!" Great topic. Always overcomplicated. I agree with the thinking of accepting the range of cost that you know you’re getting into. Don’t count beans at the table. If your chicken Alfredo was listed as $2 more you still would have gotten it. But when the bill comes suddenly $2 is a financial consideration. Don’t go out. If it’s friends in a tighter financial situation, don’t suggest going out.

i don't get the hullabaloo over splitting the check - it takes 5 seconds to pass around the bill, see what you ate, and venmo whoever wants the credit card points accordingly. only time you should split evenly is if it's like a tapas situation where everyone is sampling everything

Hard agree! Why should we pay for desserts and drinks if we didn’t have any?

tax and tip!!! i agree. look: add up the tax and tip, divide by # of people. then go tally what you ordered, and add your tax + tip.

Can't believe they forgot Bill Murray. I could see them being fans of him. Caddy Shack? C'mon boys.

Only go out with people with whom you feel comfortable arguing about settling the bill, case closed. Also, people who don't drink alcohol, before ordering, tell your waiter to make your order(s) separate. No shame in that.

Thats a wild culture. In Austria its very common for everyone to pay for themselves, when going out. Waiters commonly ask the guests; "Do you pay as one or split?" We go "split", and the waiter gives each one the subtotal of what we ordered to pay + the receipt. And not 20% tip holy hell that's a lot. But maybe our waiters are just paid better than yours.

they are! tipping in america is fucked, but if we don't, the service workers potentially get below poverty wages.

I’m also against the Venmo splitting. Plus aren’t they gonna tax you on that?
