Ben Gazzara always had character, and now we know more about it. An absolute actor's actor.

Curiously, Gazzarra suffered the same fate as Robert Ryan.....both were consummate actors; the camera loved them....when they were on screen, you watched them....but for some reason, neither became major stars. Maybe because they had that mythical quality of 'edginess', unachievable by the candy-floss actors of the time......who had diaphanous box office appeal the producers craved for.

That’s a *good* thing. Being a star is overrated; it’s empty. Gazzara was a lifelong artist. He was able to get lost in a character in a way that a star never could from the audience’s perspective.

This would be the first Ben Gazzara film NOT directed by John Cassavetes that I ever heard of.

He’s been in a *ton* of films that have nothing to do with Cassavetes. How odd.

so you've never heard of roadhouse or anatomy of a murder, or did you just not know he was in them?

I wish I could understand everything he said - Did he say ANOTHER actor on the set was going to get fired, but he defended him, so he never left?

I thought I was the only one that caught that...all of those guys were screwing each other...I would have certainly got it on with George Peppard and Peter Mark Richmond and Ben Gazarra
