Thank you for that episode. I was unaware that BMTH was. I'll have to give them a go. Will there be a forthcoming link for the Klon clone maker from Scotland? I loved how far away the cabs had to be and how Malia had lots of quirky bits, just for fun. He seemed like great people, sincere, curious and excited about things, and sounded deep into how he found his tones, thru work, thru playing, across time, learning. The contrasts and similarities, between the three POVs, to find sounds was fun and very cool to learn. Curious that there was both a Klon clone and a Soul Food. I love it when small makers get featured on TPS. I admit, I just ordered a Tru 18v Colordriver today.

I could listen to Ben rant for hours. He most certainly deserves some sort of TV show, you shouldn't have to seek out sensible people on the internet, they should be celebrated loudly and in plain view.

Secondly, he was a visiting researcher in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Milan, working on fMRI brain scans of language and executive function, and then he went on to study clinical medicine at UCL Medical School and qualified as a medical doctor in 2000. So I think he should know one or two things about "mental illness".

i never knew UK's chief drug advisor was sacked for advocating that policies should be based on actual scientific evidence. I did a google and found an article by Ben Goldacre (the guy in this video) talking about the sacking titled: "Are your drugs laws working? Ask a scientist".

@caketheory How do you know what Robert (the driver) is thinking? I understood "proper doctor" to mean a doctor with a medical degree instead of for instance law or theology. Psychiatrists do have the same basic medical training as dentists, surgeons et.c. Robert doesn't say "you can fix...", he says "I wouldn't have a clue if someone came in with a wobbly leg" (in context of being a layperson), and he also interrupts Ben as he is answering, so I don't think he was intentionally misleading.

His alma mater is on wikipedia. "BA, Magdalen College, Oxford MB, BS, UCL Medical School (2000)" - are you saying that University College Medical School is a phony medical school? He states explicitly that he doesn't deal with patients anymore, he deals with research, isn't that a clear answer?

@webbtje My criticism is that Goldacre shouldn't be calling other people quacks when hes a psychiatrist. Psychiatry has no biological test for any mental illness and yet they claim mental illness is caused by a "chemical imbalance". You take your question about depression, they don't give you a brain scan and find out your serotonin level and then correct your imbalance and take you off prozac when your serotonin has stabalized.

@BentStigsen Most doctors that appear on TV always specify their speciality. For example if someone appears on the BBC News they are introduced as "psychologist, psychiatrist, gp, cardiologist etc". He never specifies what does and the reason is because psychiatry is a fraud and he's a Quack. Most people don't know what he does and I'm just trying to raise public awareness. Psychiatry still uses ECT treatment and he's calling everyone else a Quack.

What was done to Simon Singh was not fair, and I'm a fan of chiropractors. What we think about the subject is irrelevent to the fact that a man was taken to court for simply speaking his mind!

@caketheory Caketheory, as a 4th year psychology major about to enter his studies as a Master's student who also prefers non drug based treatments, I think it's myopic to say that psychiatry is quackery. . The majority of studies to my knowledge demonstrate that the best treatment for a majority of disorders lies in a combination of cognitive-behavioural therapy and drugs.

Because of course that's infallible. Plus ... what would be his motive for doing so? If he does have one, he needs testing himself - if he's willing to simultaneously line his pockets by lying AND advocate greater public information/awareness.

Doctors of letters are often very unhappy about Medical Doctors calling themselves "Doctors", as they don't have PHDs, they just have MDs.

Oh, you "think", do you? I don't mean to be rude. I'd just be able to make a better judgment of the validity of your arguments if I were to get a clearer idea of how far your authority extends in this area (baring in mind that, at least to me, a snazzy KZbin vid alone does not constitute being versed in a science).

You do realise you have to go through medical schools ... go through internship and residency as a medical doctor, before picking psychiatrist as the specialty..? besides a GP can't treat a broken lag, a orthopedician does...

@caketheory So you'd do exactly what a psychiatrist does. That's rather telling, isn't it? They're not all antidepressant-shovelling machines, you know. I'm still waiting for your specific criticisms of Goldacre rather than evidentially-unsupported ramblings and rantings about a subject you seem not to fully grasp.

Hi, I wrote my comment 2 years ago. At the time he was working as a "liason psychiatrist" for Mausley Hospital. Anyone who works as a psychiatrist must first get a medical degree like the one you point out. I don't have a problem with a medical degree its a good thing etc. My problem is that psychiatry is a pseudoscience and I was just very angry that he keeps picking on pseudoscience but says nothing about the biggest and most destructive pseudoscience known to man.

i think Ben is lieing on a basic level, if you have ever understood basic Chinese face reading you will understand what i am saying. Certain parts he is telling the truth but if you look at his eyes you can tell he is lying at others. I'm not saying he is always a liar, but either follow your gut/ heart or understand at least basic face reading.

I don't like this series. I think drivers should concentrate on the road, not what their passengers have to say. To that end, passengers have a duty to shut up.
