Worked really well in the end. Really cool how you used _not_ a microcontroller but a bunch of logic, timers and op-amps.

i would have converted the analog sound wave to drive a servro motor, so the louder you get the more the jaw opens so if you wispier the puppets mouth moves less. i also would have added a audio input jack that bypassed the main mic so they can play a pre recorded voice and the puppet act that way.
@scruffy0mogwai9 жыл бұрын
brandonhughes7 I was thinking along those lines, but it could be over-complicating things too. Also, replace the spring used in the jaw. You get an unnatural oscillation when the jaw closes and it appears to bounce.

In pinball machines, solenoids are kept from overheating by opening a contact when the actuator has reached its desired position, and once that contact opens, a small holding current (24V through a resistor) keeps the actuator in position. A similar thing could be done on the puppet jaw just by feeding it a full 24V for a short time (~25 ms?), and then the gate generated by your first retriggerable multivibrator could supply the holding current through a resistor.

***** I'm actually kind of tired of all the portable console builds. They're all roughly the same process: Break down console Remove/reposition drives Hack a controller Find display Build case Build whole product Done Fun the first few times, kinda boring the next few. I mean, don't get me wrong, the show is interesting and educational enough to keep watching through the less-interesting episodes. But seeing what you actually get to do as a freelance electrical engineer? That's really cool, and a lot more useful than "here's how to hack together a portable console that you could probably just emulate on your phone."
@Ederick19369 жыл бұрын
roboticmind23 yeah... it... kinda is. i pretty much know what to expect from a portable console build, this however is much more interesting because there is actual development involved

Excellent episode Ben, apologies on behalf of the KZbin community for the incessant whining about the Dreamcast portable video.
@b4ux1t3-tech9 жыл бұрын
Cripes, people. Why do you want the Dreamcast portable so badly? Portable consoles are all the same few steps, with slightly different details. Breaking down a console and putting it into a portable form is fundamentally identical to building a portable Raspberry Pi project. All you need is to wire up inputs, find a display that you can power portably, build a case, and plug everything together. There's little-to-no variation, apart from form factor, for *any* of the consoles that exist. Seeing how he works on novel (and lucrative) ideas is much more interesting than watching him do something he's done multiple times already. Electrical engineering is about creating, not about rehashing the same formula.

It seems like a weight in the jaw would absorb some of the bounce of the spring.

Some electrical puppeteers use their jaw action to actuate the puppet's. Other times, they use their hands, with some fingers operation other actions. This was still cool.

I would have used a raspberry pi with a camera and a similar coil to the one you had. Then have the actors speak in front of the camera. Write some image processing code to track how much the mouth opens and use that to drive the pwm driver for the coil. The only problem you might run into is lag but it should be much easier to code that doing it all analog.

What's the reason Ben chose 1000hz as the pulse frequency for the solenoid? More interestingly, what is the rate of change of the strength of the solenoid as the frequency of the pulse changes? Also the heat would change too, obviously. But mustn't the strength of the solenoid's "grip" on the metal decrease somewhat when it's pulsed?
