The Atari cartridge restoration felt like some sort of restoration from an ancient civilization. This gives me chills as to what it would be like if society as we know it crumbled and people found hardware thousands of years later.
@Hyreia9 жыл бұрын
sinfulldreamer I had the same chill. And then got really happy to see the results. It looks like that cartridge did its job protecting the the chip. He had to "cheat" a little with the wires but the results are worth it. If civilization did collapse, things look good for old fashion game cartridges and not so good for discs and cloud storage. If Asteroids can survive crushed and buried in a landfill for 30 years, I suspect they'd last even longer in someone's attic. Meanwhile the discs would probably rot in that time span.

@MindMeetMaker10 жыл бұрын
I have starting to think too much is being decided / built off camera, Ben with your older builds you would spend more time exploring ideas and testing them, for the viewer this made the episode more interesting, where was the footage for the designs cut on the laser, or the CNC designs and build of your Jig on the bandsaw. Your show is starting to remind me of a childrens TV show in England UK called Blue Peter that got a catch phase "Heres One I Made Earlier" as everything was pre-assembled before cameras rolled. I dont like to be negative as I love the show and look forward weekly for another dose, just compared to your older style episodes there seems to be something missing and less gripping.
@Robonza10 жыл бұрын
Cool show Ben, just a little constructive feedback, laser cutting vinyl makes chlorine gas which can kill living things including humans and corrodes your laser cutter. I won't laser it! Cutting ABS makes cyanide gas which is actually not as bad but should be vented and filtered. Oh yeah cleaning PCB's with wire wool can catch you out as one metal hair can destroy all. I use scotchbrite if I want to be aggressive with out extra risk.

I would love to make one with a touchscreen display, SD card reader and a keyboard, the keyboard could just be Bluetooth with a receiver in the display due to having some spare space. But I'm not very good at this sort of stuff.
@Jay-kc2pm9 жыл бұрын
+George Young You'd have to map the touch screen in such a way that you'd have to change the code in order to make it emulate a controller. As for the SD card reader, you can buy a SD to USB adapter for cheap on EBay. The keyboard would have limited support and would only be useful for typing faster. So, is it worth it? It depends.

I still want to see Ben de-portabilize a handheld gaming console. Making it so that you could hook it up to your TV. I gave him the suggestion of doing that with a GBA, but apparently there's some accessory already that allows you to do that. =/

Does he ever realize he can get a laptop display a $20 board to use hdmi
@MrGencyExit6410 жыл бұрын
Laptop displays are ridiculously expensive on top of that extra $20. They're not meant to be purchased by the end-consumer, so when you can get them, they're not at mass produced prices.
@glitchsmasher10 жыл бұрын
MrGencyExit64 Also they use proprietary interfaces for the most part.
@zanduh0410 жыл бұрын
MrGencyExit64 You can get a laptop display for decent prices online where they sell spare laptop and phone parts. Mostly it's places that buy used electronics and do tear-downs for the individual working components.
@glitchsmasher10 жыл бұрын
ZanderDude Yes, but didn't you see Ben's video on reworking displays? He tried to get a display from a photo frame to waork. It took him ages and in the end he didn't have electronics to drive it.
@MrGencyExit6410 жыл бұрын
glitchsmasher Actually, it's not proprietary. There is a widely used standard called FPD (Flat Panel Display Link) which is based on LVDS (low voltage differential signaling) for connecting the flat panel to its controller logic board. More recently, eDP (Embedded Display Port) has also been standardized.

ok so im 35, which means im old but not over the hill. lol, so i was lucky enough to be playing video games almost from the get go...almost, my head nearly exploded when that atari landfill cartdrige game out, thing is, i never saw the insides of cartridges i played as a kid, (ive only took apart 4th/5th and 6th gen -h8 the term 'nxt gen'-consoles or pads when mine broke from playing) i never realised how small the insides are compared the the casing? it seems the same with early consoles too from back then even genisis (my fav back then) that alot of the casing was unnecessary and they could have been made way sleeker and smaller than they were. i just couldnt get over how small the insides of that cartridge are.
@gadzintu10 жыл бұрын
This js impressive. I wonder how thick it will be though.

probably less thick than the actual console itself but nearly the same. The console has a lot of empty space because Microsoft was extra worried about airflow.
