Paraphrasing the General, "unless you are amongst the political elite, you life as a Russian is shit."
@petersinclair39972 ай бұрын
True to some extent from my observations having been across Russia. Life in Moscow and St Petersburg seems satisfactory and poor version of a European country while remaining very controlled and surveilled. In the rural areas, many folk face a subsistence living and appear accustomed to hardship compensated by religious devotion. Years back, I saw an interview, where Putin said the Russian Church creates cohesion as a substitute for rule in the Tsarist era. Political pressure won’t come from the rural areas. Those populations will just suck-up hardships. Populations in Moscow and St Petersburg might protest if feeling threaten, but unlikely to riot, as Putin will recall and have taken precautions against 1917 styled uprisings. To place further pressure on Oligarchs, more sanctions and travel restrictions on oligarchs and elites, and their families. Expatriate elites’ families from the West, back to Russia. Say Russia’s USD 600 billion held by the West is conditionally “subject” to confiscation in part or in total, if certain redlines are crossed, e.g., the use certain weapons. Peter. S. Ph.D.

I was born at the end of the "Baby Boom" era, early 1960's. I attended a dinner party some months ago and a young lady guest was repeating the "nervous nellie" line about not provoking Putin because he has Nuclear weapons. I asked her if she would be willing to sign her house, automobiles, saving accounts and all heirloom jewelry over to the Russian embassy and self report to a concentration camp in Kansas? Are you going to do that because Putin has Nuclear weapons? At what point do you say HELL NO! WE HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AS WELL AND IF YOU USE YOURS WE WILL USE OURS! From a position of logical deduction I say that point should have been in 2014.
