What an excellent video Andy on the "magic elbow!" I have been in possession of Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" since its publication in 1957. On page 51, he quotes "at address, the left elbow points to the left hipbone and the right elbow points to the right hipbone. The right elbow can then fold in correctly on the backswing." This is something that is now natural to me and I immediately know when my elbow leaves my side because the consequences aren't pretty! Great Job Andy explaining "Hogan's Magic Move!" I feel every golfer should have a copy of Hogan's book in their library! It's very concise, to the point, and with pictures! :-)

Further to your video and the comment from johnschwartz - referring once more to Ben's book, 'The modern fundamentals of golf-page 90', printed in capitals as it is in the book, 'THE HIPS INITIATE THE DOWNSWING' They are the pivotal element of the chain action. Starting them first and moving them correctly - this one action practically makes the downswing.' Under no circumstances should you move the hands and wrists as you start the downswing! Instead, pull the left hip back; feel the weight transferring into the left heal and the left leg straightening, or posting as you Americans call it, - and voila! the arms and hands have now moved - without any conscious effort from you - to a position where the right elbow is just in front of the right hip - the perfect position to hit the ball as hard as you like with the entire right side by rotating your right forearm and not releasing your wrists. WHEN YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU CAN START PLAYING GOLF!

From a veteran swing coach, I applaud your efforts to bring light to this ultra important swing factor. Any disconnect from the inside, upper arm from the core, results in less than desirable outcomes to say the least. The only other thing I highly recommend is the Square To Square method of Mike Austin fame. As a result, all my students eventually wind up being better 'Swing Repeaters' than this old bag. ( me ) Keep up the great instructionals, friend.

Got a copy of Hogan's "Lessons" book back in 1992 shortly after I picked up the game. It was a HUGE help in getting me on track to getting a repeatable swing. And sure enough, whenever I really REALLY mishit a shot it's almost always because I didn't tuck my right (trail) elbow into my side as I started my downswing. If I let that elbow fly... welcome to Topsville, Sliceland, and Fatsburg. Probably because halfway down I KNOW what I did but the last-minute efforts to get back on plane are too late.

Pete Cowan tips work great with hogans elbow. I am glad you didn’t mention the rubber band feeling hogan always talked about with his hips. I feel that takes away from the elbow move. I focused on that rubber band feeling and it was bad. Your wedge under the trail foot drill was money for me, 3/4 swings with towel and that wedge under the heel are perfect for me warming up. That course you where at on magic elbow looked cool.

Excellent video. My trail arm has become an obsession for me. You watch a swing like Xander Schauffle's for instance, and he keeps his trail arm fully extended during his backswing for quite a long time before bending it. I try to mimic this because I think his swing is a thing of beauty, but keeping the right arm extended is not natural for me. Your swing, like Hogan's, encourages the right arm to bend earlier...as long as you keep that elbow tucked in pretty close the whole time. That is much easier for me to do. I hadn't though much about keeping it tucked in and bent during the downswing, though, until watching your video. I am anxious to try this out. Thanks for the video :)

This guy (Andy Carter) is 100% correct. Not many people talk about what the "right elbow" does during the golf swing. It took me, literally, several years to understand that. And now I'm hitting the golf ball much better, and straighter. I don't care what my swing looks like going back. It only matters where your elbow is at impact.

My swing thought has always been ball position with the club I’m using, 4/10 tightness of hand grip, take away with club staying in front of my body trying to keep club face closed at top of the swing, keeping my spine angle the same through impact, keep my weight inside back foot on back swing, weight transition to front foot just before down swing, now I have to worry about the U position with my trail elbow, all for me to chunk it 20 metres yeah… thanks for the extra thought Andy

I’ve been studying videos of every type, and every video is contradictory to the last. Here is something I haven’t found. How every element of the golf swing is timing, for example when does the trial elbow push to be straight? Sure hold it as you turn but if you hold it too long you lose speed. Just like the hinge of the wrist, or hips, shoulders, knee,bend, there are so many elements, what about breathing? A technique I find helpful is Trying all the little tweaks, hit a ball or two, then try another and so on, Then totally loose with minimal effort swing relaxed, often this produces great results.
@andycartergolf
@andycartergolf Жыл бұрын
This is the art of overthinking it in my opinion. Get good fundaments, get the club into a decent position then hit the ball. The trail arm will extend post impact at a time when you have ZERO control due to speed

Its when you bring the club back to neutral/square/straight to target just before contact. Its a high speed point of the swing hence why its a big power source but also it’s key to the swing for shot direction

This is one of the absolute essential key moves in golf. Get that right forearm, and right wrist BACK. The right elbow should point down towards the ground, from setup, to the top of the backswing, and then LEAD the downswing. Watch professionals in ANY sport. A baseball pitcher. A baseball hitter. A tennis forehand. A quarterback. Hell. Even a rock skipper. lol Too many people get the right arm wrong, and then try to push the club to the ball. This is very weak, and inconsistent. Imagine you’re trying to sink a long axe into the side of a tree, near the ground. Or, drive a nail into the wall, near the floor, with a long hammer. That’s the golf swing.

Not necessarily, the last video is about identifying your grip position IF you hook/ pull the ball as mentioned in the video. This video is about trail arm positioning to help build the backswing and control path in to the downswing. They are very different subjects and depend on what you need as a player… thats if you know what you need. The worst thing you can do is try every tip because they may not be related to you

You can combine this with your Gem Golf aid. Use the heaviest weight. Take your address with both hands on the club. Cock your wrists up until the club is parallel to the ground facing away from you. Then rotate away from the target until the club is parallel to the target line and pointed away from the target. Now do a 90 degree curl with you right arm such that your right forearm is parallel to the ground. If your grip is light and if you let the Gem do it’s thing you’ll find the perfect hand position and you can rehearse the rest of the backswing and transition while letting the Gem be your guide. Or … maybe I am full of 💩

hogan didn't actually do that. his arms increased separation in the start of the backswing. this enabled him to take the club back on the inside. hogan then flexed his right arm back into a very deep position, at the top of the backswing. in the waggle the digiti minimi and the flexor retinaculum, in the left hand, work as antagonistic opposites; and, this directs force into the right elbow, causing the arms to increase separation, in the start of the backswing. the arms then reduce separation towards the top of the backswing; and, continue to reduce separation in the start of the downswing. it's an enantiodromia sort of thing

It's simple folks , once your right elbow touches your side you keep it there and hit the ball with your body turn with EVERY CLUB ! .... and after impact it doesn't matter what you do with your body or arms or hands , BECAUSE THE BALL IS ALREADY GONE !!! ..... JUST GET THE CLUBHEAD SQUARE TO THE BALL AT IMPACT, and you do that by hitting the ball with a turn and not with the arms or hands once that right elbow touches your right side .... but these worthless teachers don't teach you this , they just muddy the waters and hope you never figure it out , so that your always coming back to have them fix your swing ..... its a business folks, and without repeat customers their out of a job !!!!
