Great video Andy. Most instructors don’t explain the grip on the trail hand as well as you did in this video. I’m a lefty and have a slice with my driver. I’ve done everything I can possibly do to fix the problem but it still persists. I have gotten it down to a fade so I can keep it in the fairway most of the time, but it perplexes me immensely not to be able to hit a draw. Thanks again for an informative video

Great video, I had a weak grip for a while and strengthened it a bit.. at first like you were saying, strong to weak, or weak to strong, feels completely alien. I think 'building the grip' as you mentioned has helped me tremendously.. I feel as if when you make a change, which FEELS extreme, you simply get use to it over time, and keep exaggerating it more and more to get that "feel" again... but you're now just on the complete opposite side with another problem to fix.. and building the grip as part of a pre shot process keeps me straight often on the course.

When you described the weak grip causing you to not be able to get the club all the way back, a light went off in my head. My slice has made me think I should weaken my grip which is causing all the issues you explained. Thanks for the great explanation of the trail hand. PS- Why does golf have to be so hard?😃

I’ve always thought that my grip was neutral. I’ve struggled BIG time w/pulled drives lately, & have long since struggled w/over bending some irons a bit too much left. If it used to be neutral, it’s def strong now. Wow! Side note. Andy, I’m thinking of signing up for some Skillest lessons w/you, but had a couple of Qs: 1.) I’m in California. Are the lessons live or via recordings (ie: I record my swing, & then you record teaching tips w/video corrections)? If live, my concern is the time change. 2.) I’m wondering about the effectiveness of a video lesson vs in person lesson (obviously can’t fly to the UK 😅). Thanks for your input either way, Andy. Your YT vids have been of great help already!
@andycartergolf Жыл бұрын
Hi ben, Hopefully the grip video has helped but definitely skillest lessons will accelerate your learning. 1) the lessons can be either but most send videos, I will do an analysis, and I will also send videos of myself doing demonstrations and explanations to make it as clear as possible. 2) it's just as, if not more effective. You receive around 15-20mins of content per lesson, in an 1-2-1 lesson you generally receive a 2 min summary and then rely on your memory. Come give it a go bud, you'll love it i'm sure

Stronger trail hand grip works for Tony Finau and it works for me too. If I weaken the right hand, I’m horribly inconsistent and I suffer from a two way miss. With a little stronger right hand, my consistency improves significantly and I hit mostly straight shots and baby draws. We are not all anatomically created equal; therefore, the same grip will not yield the same results for all people. Each person needs to experiment and find the grip that works best for their golf goals.

I have a strong left hand grip (see 3-4 knuckles) and a neutral right hand. Used to have the right hand under the club and the only way I could release the club freely was to have the right elbow in front of my right hip, didn’t like that feeling, so changed the right hand to a more neutral grip.
@andycartergolf Жыл бұрын
Strong left and neutral to weak right at least allows the hands to work opposite each other which will help stablise the face. When you weaken the right hand more its Also great for chipping and bunkers

@@blue24563 I will say…. Out of the 3 of us, I’m the straightest. I control the face better. I can also work the ball either direction. The super strong grip guy probably has the cleanest iron strike. He comes in very shallow, and always collects the ball, and then takes a divot. He hits a low draw(almost a hook). The weak left hand, and strong right hand guy somehow hits it the furthest, out of us 3, but suffers with a 2-way miss on his bad days. It’s a very strange dynamic between us all, but the scores are always super close.

@@andycartergolf most amateurs hit a slice. They start by hitting a block to the right and then aim further left. This only compounds the problem. With a strong grip you can start swinging out to the right and a slightly closed club face to path results in a draw. I used to be the guy with the perfect neutral grip and struggled for 20 years. A grip that works for some don’t work for all. Shawn Clements Wisdom in golf has proved that to me. Club face at impact and swing direction are king! Cheers
@andycartergolf Жыл бұрын
A lot of this is correct but the video is about those who have a strong grip and dont know how to use it. Or have the strong grip which then causes them additional issues. What you’re saying isnt wrong but in the majority of cases it isnt as practical. Allowing too strong a grip is like allowing another compensation in the swing which within amateur golfers leads to more inconsistency

No, just no. Went from a 8.5 to scratch by doing the opposite. If it’s not working it’s a different story. Telling a slicer to go weaker isn’t the answer. If you’re hooking then start with lie angle and plane. I can see this helping someone that hooks. But someone that still slices with a strong grip is releasing the club too underhand and with too tense of a grip.

It isn’t malpractice lol! I gave clear and obvious reasons why a strong grip is bad if you have the shots I described or limitations created through the grip. I could easily make a video on why a strong grip is good for players- that would be malpractice because the majority of amateur golfers have a below-average skill level and therefore wont be able to do the things you mentioned.
