Honestly folks, get this figured out and just about everything else you’ve worked on throughout your golf journey will start to happen effortlessly. There is a reason Hogan dedicated something like 19 pages to explaining this and it’s actually very easy to do. Once you feel it, you can’t un-feel it. The explanation from Chris on where you feel this, especially in the right hand, is 100% spot on. I literally chuckle at the range now watching folks struggle and always resist the urge to walk up to them and just reset their grip and then say, “you’re welcome” and walk away. But I don’t want to be golf guy and we have to figure these things out on our own, ha :)

as crazy as it sounds- you are spot on- I tried this on the course and I knew exactly where the club head was- plus it prevents me from whipping the club inside- I finally broke 90- with some practice I 'm sure I'll break 80

Chris, in the latter part of this video you said Hogan weakened his grip 1/4 turn. Where did you see that? The Life magazine article quotes Hogan as saying he weakened his left thumb 1/8 to 1/4 inch, which seems to be a lot less than 1/4 turn. Now I want you to know I am not discounting anything you are saying, including the new feel you are talking about, I just wanted to point out a possible info discrepancy and ask where you saw the "1/4 turn" words.
@NoMoreSecrets.BenHogan
@NoMoreSecrets.BenHogan Жыл бұрын
Sorry if it is not in any of the writings. I tied it moving the thumb in the increments you described, however it was not until I felt the 1/4 turn of the entire hand that allowed my correct pressure point in the thumb to get on the left side of the shaft. Hope that helps.

Does it matter if you have a strong or weak grip using the Hogan swing technique?
@NoMoreSecrets.BenHogan
@NoMoreSecrets.BenHogan 9 ай бұрын
I think so for one reason and one reason only. If you have a weaker left hand and understand how to work the swing with the lead side of your body, hitting it left becomes impossible, thus eliminating one side of the golf course. Just my opinion.

Hogan used what is considered an extremely weak grip. Why is that? Because he struggled with a "caddy hook" (AKA, duck hook) for most of his early career. It was the only way he could eliminate it. Did it work for him? Absolutely! Should it be considered a standard...? Hardly! What worked for Hogan, worked for Hogan. I believe the whole point of Hogan was - figure out what works for you. The secret is in the dirt.

I agree wholeheartedly. However, be willing to honestly try what has worked for others in the past. My father, a PGA teaching pro for over 35 years , old school, and most assuredly a Hogan fan, eventually had to convert to a "strong" grip. He didn't like the thought, just at 88 and a 4 HC, he had to do so to 13:04 continue playing "almost decent" golf. His words, not mine. Chris, you have helped my game tremendously! Last outing, I hit 10 out of 16 fairways and had 5 GIR, barely missing the greens on the rest of my play. Thank You! Will soon join up with your site.

Chris: I use a baseball grip with thumbs off the top of shaft and more towards the sides. This grip works for me as I feel both hands in the swing with no dominating hand. For me the key takeaway from your vid is not putting pressure on the top of the shaft.

Watching your video, at first I thought ...I don't know about this guy...but I watched it all, then went across the street to a baseball diamond and hit 32 balls with my wedge from the outfield toward the infield (the green) and made solid contact on 27 balls that would have been on the green. I can't wait to get to a driving range so I can hit my longer clubs. It was the best my swing felt in decades. ( I'm going on 72). Thank you so much Chris. May God continue to bless you.

Understanding the relationship between the lead wrist and the club face (both loft and face angle) can lead a player right down the path that Hogan trod and you’ve aptly pointed out. The famous “weakening of the grip” wasn’t to fight a hook, it was to stabilize the club face by putting the face in a biomechanical alignment that’s at the end of the range of motion. Meaning, if we want the club face to be square(ish) to the path into and post impact, the lead wrist position- which is dictated mostly by the grip - must keep the club face square(ish) or else it’s useless. A “strong grip” - when putting the lead wrist into full flexion into and through the strike - produces a woefully shut face. It’s unusable. So, the golfer then creates a “grey area” in their movement pattern. Sometimes it’s on and timed well, other times not. If I recall correctly, Hogan said something to the effect of a player needs to “find the left side of the golf club” in Chris Tchetter’s book. I think if it as putting the striking tool in a clamp to do the task. Then we set about limiting the rotation of the face on its sagittal plane - the rolling of the face to square it. Your channel is awesome. I’d love to collaborate sometime.

I don't understand the the 'butterfly grip' concept. It doesn't seem possible because you're touching your palms together at the same part of the hand, but the right hand is lower than the left on the club. That breaks the butterfly apart.

I didnt know about this grip but always had problems with my grip and did some experimenting. After many tedious hours I completely changed it . I'm right handed. Left hand , grip the club with pinky and next finger pressed against club grip against your palm . The thumb making a straight line up the opposite arm. Similar to what you demonstrated. So no pressure except 2 fingers at the top of club Right hand interlocking grip but only gripping club with index finger and thumb . The palm goes snuggley over left thumb. The right thumb also makes a straight line following right arm. This gives the appearance of a strong grip. Only pressure points are top of club grip and bottom of club grip. With this grip I found that the club can be held with hardly any pressure but simply will not slip . Swing as hard as you want but no slip . Now I watch your presentation and it is very similar. Love your videos and your style. Cheers I would love it if you tried this grip out , am interested to see what you reckon.

Hi Chris. Regarding this video about Mr Hogan grip. I think you are really wrong. You are referring to the Coleman video and says , look at it and see. I have been studying Hogan since 1990 and never seen Hogan grip the club as you describe. There is no moment in the Coleman video that shows that Hogan grips the club so much down the fingers. And there is not any picture in the five fundamentals book showing what you says is right. So i am curios how you can be so sure about all that you say regarding Mr Hogans swing is correct. So far we haven´t seen you make a real golf swing at all, just seen you stand there promising as that all you say is dead right, period.

I rebuild my swing 3 years ago after reading 5 lessons. Changed everything, but realise I missed this key to Hogans swing. I had a strong grip in my left hand and always ended up closing the club in the downswing. I couldn’t figure out why. Even if I made a slow swing back, holding the club as hard as I could, and stopping back down the face was closed. I’ve been changing things to compensate, but never tried this. This is crucial information to make Hogans swing work. So glad I found it! You should empathise this for everyone doing this shift to Hogan swing. You don’t get it in the 5 lessons book. At least I didn’t. Your series about Hogan is revolutionary. Fantastic research and great observation of details! Thank you!

Ok, previously had a loose grip at the top, across the line, overswing especially with the driver. I'm a low single handicapper and hit long ( ball speed 172 mph) and over 50 years old, but it can be hit and miss off the tee, generally with hook spin. I tried it, feels very controlled, overswing gone, baby cut throughout the bag. Also works well with chipping. Thank you so much, at last I found the real reason for fanning the club on the inside, causing a lateral move, overswing, across the line, poor sequencing etc.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that I ordered two of those spectator seat devices from Amazon- one for me and one for my loving brother. I watched another one of your videos that said your KZbin site somehow didn’t qualify under Amazon’s guidelines. Sorry about that! Hi Chris. I enjoy your videos; however, John Schlee, who actually learned his grip from Hogan, adamantly says the opposite - that the left thumb (for right handed golfer) should be placed slightly to the right side of the shaft. And I believe Hogan said that he weakened his left hand by moving 1/4 in. (not 1/4 turn) to the left from where he was before on the shaft (which was previously more of a neutral grip). Just curious as to how you reconcile your left hand grip placement with that of Schlee's. Thanks

When he says Hogan changed his grip and got the thumb on top of the shaft (Five Lessons) just do that and then move the pressure point of the (thumb only!!!) the way I described in the video I did. @@maeu59 First check your ball position, make sure it is in line with your left heel. Most people play it to far back never giving the clubface enough time to square up. Next it that is in check, just find a way to grip it that works for you and try to get that lead thumb pressure point on the left side of the grip, if you're right handed. But without seeing your swing I am only guessing at this point as it could be (the slice) happening from other things as well.

Totally over complicated explanation of something very straightforward. Been a Class A for 20 years teaching the SIMPLE Hogan grip. This is for sure not it.

Chris, I appreciate your study of Hogan but I’m not too interested about the whys and the what about of the Great Mr. Hogan. Just show me what to do. You were 5 minutes into a 15 minute video before you gave a specific instruction. I have watched about 10 of your videos and yet to see you hit a ball into a net. Can you do that very well or do you just talk a good game? What the heck is Polygon Golf? Again I’ve watched 10 videos and no mention of it. Feels like you are hiding something. I like your manner and soft spoken approach but waiting for you to get to the point is tedious. Sorry this is a bit negative but I hope some of it can help you to make good content. As a life long golfer I love the game and the golf swing but I just want to know the time, not how to make the watch. Best wishes.

2 reasons. 1 I have mentioned many times. The other is it is my job to teach what is happening. The information I share and the way I am doing it currently has helped and is helping 1000's of golfers all over the world.

I follow your content recently. I am not aware about everything what said or explain before. I was just wondering cause I like to see démonstration too. No offense if you took my comment on a bad way. Not my purpose

@stephanetzicuris3376 the reason I can not go and hit balls at the course or a driving range is because of my daughter's health. If my daughter catches a common cold, it becomes life threatening. So until the doctors clear her with the new meds she is on I just cannot do it.
