Tom is the best. Clear, easy to grasp teaching style. Started practicing S&T after watching Tom, especially his Hogan series videos. Knocked 14 strokes off my best round. That's the truth. Amazing. I appreciate that! Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Thanks for your kind words and support! I read a comment talking about separation, the whole premise behind Ben Hogan swing was it connection, if you're going to learn the Ben Hogan swing , you must learn the windup of the backswing, hands pull the arms, arms pull the shoulders, shoulders pull the hips, hips pull the left foot up. This does not create torque, it creates connection. The idea behind the windup, to create the same sequence of events coming down as going back, nothing will repeat under pressure like this type of sequencing. Tigers injuries were a result of changing teachers, and trying to implement a more upright swing, this caused the disconnection, and lower back problems. When executed properly Ben Hogan's swing is a physical pleasure, if you do not use the sequencing properly, or disregard the sequencing, there's a snap hook or a double cross dead right push waiting for you somewhere in that round.Any kind of "play" or disconnection between the hips and shoulders will result in the ball starting right or hips being behind shoulders resulting in a snap hook. Love your videos and instruction,many will advance thier game following your work.

This was that eye-opening moment for me. The real “swing” only occurs from hip height to hip height. The upper part of the downswing is only there for putting the club in the right position to extend through the ball. Once I started doing this I instantly played better and more enjoyable golf.

I'm glad you are enjoying the episodes, Rob! As for Mr. Hogan's dominant hand, here's an excerpt from a 1987 Golf Magazine interview with Mr. Hogan: GOLF: You were a natural left-hander who took up the game right-handed, weren’t you? HOGAN: No, that’s one of those things that’s always been written, but it’s an absolute myth. The truth is, the first golf club I owned was an old left-handed, wooden-shafted, rib-faced mashie that a fellow gave me, and that’s the club I was weaned on. During the mornings we caddies would bang the ball up and down the practice field until the members arrived and it was time to go to work. So I did all that formative practice left-handed. But I’m a natural right-hander. Cheers! Tom

Correct. There is no magic elixir here - no shortcuts, no way for me to climb into someone’s physiological and psychological uniqueness and translate my personal swing feels, thoughts, or triggers into theirs. I can teach folks what the correct motions and prescribed positions are, simplify them, demonstrate their proper execution, and where possible offer various options or ”feels” for accomplishing the same desired result, but by design it must ultimately come down to each individual golfer to interpret, incorporate, ingrain and, basically, “figure it out” if they are truly going to take ownership of THEIR swing!
@macdaddyblues12 жыл бұрын
Tom.. as always, I love your teaching. These positions are important. However, modern tech (3D motion capture) has proven where speed really comes from. All top pros have a distinct advantage over most amateurs and that is speed from the top to left arm parallel is quite a bit faster than an amateur swing (like 6-8 miles an hour of hand speed), which translates into way more speed at the bottom. If you think about it logically, if you wait until toward the bottom of the swing to create power, there just isn't enough time to ramp up that speed to tour levels. You have that speed in your swing and you can see it on video when the club reacts to your quick but smooth transition. People often think that is swinging from the top, actually swinging from the top is early extension or early release. I mean this as an add to, not criticism. Thanks man... your the best.

I figured out the secrets to Ben's swing a while ago you are right on with everything except a secret I learned about his grip no one has figured it yet but it allows the bowing of the wrists through impact I hit the ball with a force that isn't really a fade it's a straight ball that releases like a draw but its action is like a fade with a lot of roll after it landsits a solid straight release of the power generated because of the way the club face stays dead straight through impact

After the previous Ben/Tom episode, I came to understand the power generated by trail arm. Even though I'm a natural lefty, I found the power! Lefty (Mickelson) also golf's opposite handed. But I heard him talk about the power generated by the trail arm. Having a dominant lead arm doesnt hurt either if I keep it straight.
@Golf364 жыл бұрын
Tom, do you think keeping the trail arm close to body and doing a proper hip turn on backswing, automatically causes the proper sequence toward the target? (Causing butt head of club on string pulled by hip bump?)
@SagutoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom - For those who already have that lateral hip slide working for them keeping the trail arm connected like Mr. Hogan can put the downswing on autopilot so you can then deliver the club with WRATH. Unfortunately, many golfers don't have that move sufficiently ingrained; as such their hip rotation takes over and brings the club across the ball from the outside regardless of how connected the trail arm is. So if you're among the fortunate ones, then more power to you....quite literally!! Cheers! Tom

I'm glad you are enjoying my channel's content, Douglas!! Speaking to your situation, it's an interesting scenario but you're definitely not alone! Just ask Phil... Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5bNg4qeqqdqr5o. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJaVnIRqacatgJY One of the keys for front side dominant players is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with your right hand as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Thanks for your comment! Tom

As I go deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, I'm realizing one MAJOR thing that makes it all easy. USE YOUR RIGHT ARM AND BE FIRM WITH IT. Although. I did try going really loose and using the interior parts of my fingers only. It was very surprising with the distance I'd gain, but sadly the accuracy dips a bit due to the nature of the club being "loose". Anything in the rough, good luck being loose. Never ending thanks to you for showing me Ben Hogan.
@NonnyStrikes4 жыл бұрын
The levy action I'm talking about with the looser grip with interiors, has to gradually work the body into it and being stable is beyond important. Too many variables, but it does feel amazing.

There is a law of diminishing returns applicable to "looseness", Johnny. I find that I do best when I can keep my forearms feeling "soft" while maintaining a secure attachment to the club with my grip. Thanks! TS

Tom, I have always heard that a lateral thrust (a big bump) is good for a two-plane golfer to bring the arms down but is not good for the one-plane golfer ( which is what Hogan was). I think if you look carefully at the Hogan video, he is not doing a lateral thrust. Rather the left hip is turning back behind out of the way while the right hip comes forward. Perhaps you can think of the left leg straightening and pushing the left hip out of the way much the same as the right leg straightened and pushed the right hip out of the way in the backswing. There might be a slight bump of the hip forward as the left hip begins turning back out of the way but definitely not a big bump or lateral slide forward.
@SagutoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hmm...Interesting that you see it that way. If you're able to watch my previous Hogan video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5bNg4qeqqdqr5o - on a computer and place your mouse pointer on the target-side edge of Mr. Hogan's left hip, I'll think you'll see quite clearly how much lateral hip slide he had in the downswing while maintaining his swing center. So much that his belly button replaced the position of his left hip at impact. The swing method I teach - which is Stack and Tilt - prescribes this lateral hip movement into impact. If the hip slide quits too soon - or is just a "bump" - then their rotation takes over, rerouting the path and shifting the low point behind the ball. Cheers! Tom
@wfrentzel75034 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily so. The hips can work independently of one another. As the left hip moves back left out of the way the right hip moves straight forward to the place the left hip occupied, so the swing is not thrown out over the plane. Also it would seem that the right shoulder going down with the lateral slide would destroy the one plane swing radius. I know Plummer @ Bennett’s Stack & Tilt was the rage a few years ago, ( I have the book) but it wasn’t so good for the games of Mike Weir, Dean Wilson, Aaron Baddeley, Tommy Armour III who have abandoned it, and it ruined them for a time.

Hey this Ben hogan stuff has helped a lot but I have a question I have started over drawing badly what should I do to help
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
It's important to know why the ball is behaving a particular way in order to reverse engineer the cause, Rodney. The ball is simply responding to the flight plan assigned to it by the clubface at impact. Clubface relative to target line dictates the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. For example, if you are hitting big push-draws that are overcurving, then it may be that your path is too shallow and - with the face closed to the path - thereby imparting excessive draw spin on the ball. There are entire sections of my online school dedicated to resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Hi Tom, Quick question: I played high level baseball and always had problem cutting the ball in golf. Until you supplied drill to hold back wrist angle throughout swing and especially into the ball and keep more weight towards front leg. In baseball, you release the wrist at impact and stay on back leg. Do you see lots of baseball players with same issue ?

Hey Tom, can you comment on the release of the right wrist and hand? If you were to hit hard with a hammer, you would consciously add power by releasing and hitting through with the power stored in the hand and wrist. Do you feel this in your swing? Not mentioned in the video.

However, I have always been, and still am, a functional flipper with a poop-scoop-magoop. Now it's a little bit less pronounced, with maybe a neutral (but not forward-leaning) shaft at impact, but then an aggressive roll. Even when I keep my right arm tucked tight, I still flip/roll a bit at the ball. HOW THE HECK DO I RELEASE THE RIGHT FOREARM WITHOUT RELEASING THE RIGHT WRIST!? I can even do your straight-arm-flying-wedge drill perfectly (which makes me a good chipper/pitcher) but I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME TRANSLATE IT TO A FULL-POWERED SWING! Thanks.

Hi Scott, I hope you are still enrolled in the school as I regularly add new content and in fact just updated the entire Downswing section! This video in the school speaks directly to your described issue: "6.10b **STOP** Learning to HIT the Golf Ball HARD - Straight Arms Drill". Is that the one you are referring to, or was it perhaps this channel video?: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJaVnIRqacatgJY. I routinely recommend both of these to others who are battling the same issue. The FF'ing habit is stubborn and can be a difficult one, especially if you were doing it for quite some time prior to making the swing change. If you're able to achieve a good impact position in the shorter swings, then you need to be patient with *_gradually_* building it into your full swing. There's no other "secret sauce" to it! Additionally, I suggest that you consider purchasing a copy of the Stack and Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. It will serve you well as a textbook reference guide for the swing and will be highly supportive of what you learn in the online school. It also contains much detail with regard to fixing common faults, and includes numerous descriptions throughout the book by PGA Tour pros pertaining to the various "feels" they experienced as they themselves were learning the swing. Finally, we can always arrange for an online lesson or a swing video analysis if you ever wish for me to have a look and see if we can pinpoint the issue and personalize a plan to overcome it. You can check out your options in this regard here: app.v1sports.com/Saguto-Golf Thanks! Tom
