Saw him in think in 1970 in Houston. Poetry in motion. Nobody hit it better than Hogan, nobody, before on since.

You think you saw him in 1970 ??? If you saw him in 1970 you would have remembered to the day .

In that full day of caddying, That's Range, 18 holes and then range, not one word was said to me as a low life caddy. I kid you not, not one word. He just points and expects you understand. I never felt so miserable in all my life, He just freezes you out. You are nothing. a sad man for sure. I called him "Ben" all day. He didn't like that. John

@@sjmckee1609 Funny you should say that. For the last two years I’ve been trying to copy Moe. Had a few scores in the sixties ( from senior tees) then back surgery. At 78 Moe’s swing is easier on the body. He, Hogan, and Trevino owned their swings. One thing about golf, we never stop learning.

Learned to play by Ben Hogan book Five fundamentals of golf. No lessons, 5 years later a 2 handicap. Live in Canada, so divide that by two for our available playing time. Not for everyone, but it worked for me!

This is the first year I tried his swing especially the right elbow tucked in during the downswing, and I imagine throwing a ball kind of motion. When it works, I’m like wow! but I need to work on the consistency. Haven’t tried this with the driver yet, on my to do list.

The swings with him in brown slacks and white shirt were from "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf" in 1965 when he played an exhibition match against Sam Snead which was hosted by Gene Sarazen. It is on KZbin. Hogan hit every fairway and every green, (as usual). The wedge where you mention he took a very large divot was from a severe downhill lie so he must have really been hitting down on it. Keep up the excellent reviews. Cheers from Australia.

My Father saw him play in very early 60’s.. story he tells is about Hogan on the driving range. Says that every other player’s shot sounded like you’d expect but BH’s sounded like a whip cracking. Read the book “Hogan” by Curt Sampson and it will literally change the way you think about the game.

The key factor that you have to remember about Ben Hogan is that early in his career, he almost quit professional golf because he couldn’t control his wicked hook. So, he analyzed his golf swing to engineer a power fade. After thousands of hours he returned to tournament play with a swing designed to beat the wild hooks. Everything we see about his grip, his swing, and his set up is for that purpose.

Very good analysis 👍 I have also tryed "Hogan" swing. To me it feels that you can get accuracy but distance needs lot off effort. Offcource amazing swing, but not for everyone. One pro said that maybe 10% he's students can try this.

with the 2nd swing it is interesting how his hand changes colour when the club reaches parallel to the target line. something definitely going on there

Yes, Bens wrists were much more elastic than others. Especially the left wrist. Also, His left hand was quite a bit larger than the right. His Father, who committed suicide when Ben was present, was a blacksmith

It is difficult to compare Hogan's face-on and down the line swings because he is an older golfer in the down the line view and his swing was different than his younger self. Take a look at his 1948 swing before the automobile accident.

Ben Hogan swung his club over the top of his backswing pushing his club with his trail shoulder facing his target as his club automatically shallowed itself down to its shaft plane where the club head impacted his ball. Believe me It is surprisingly easy for anyone to do. Cheers

Great video. Maybe I was hearing you wrong, but did you say it was unusual for him to be moving laterally toward the target while still in his backswing? I watch a lot of the analysis done by the Athletic Motion Golf guys of the tour's best swings, and one thing they repeatedly say is that almost all of the video breakdowns of the world's best players show a lateral move toward the target either as the backswing is finishing (but even before it does) or as the swing reaches the top. After hearing that, I've noticed it more recently on slow motion swings, like Rahm for example. Thoughts?

They are wrong. No one is moving towards the target in the backswing unless they have a late thoracic extension, or they are moving off the ball in the backswing and are simply moving back to square before they pivot down. If you saw a video of my swing you’d say “he’s moving toward the target in the backswing” but I’m not - I’m simply extending my upper back/thoracic spine to finish the backswing before I dig in, square, and pivot. What the video shows and what I’m doing are very different things.

I would believe the analysis of AMG as far as how today’s players do shift their weight from the back (right) to the front (left) even before they reach the end of their backswing. You can find a great and maybe even the best analysis of Hogan’s swing in the book “The Hogan Way” by John Andrisani,, instruction editor at Golf Magazine for 16 years. In his book on “The Seventh Movement” John describes and quotes Hogan several times describing how Hogan used his lower body to start his downswing just as the guys at AMG show in their force plate figures. This is also something that Jim McLean teaches in his X-factor as well as in Axiom / Rotary Swing series. It is one of the most talked about secrets of the golf swing which is also most often lost to the average amateur player, IMO.

Mike - as always, awesome video. I appreciate that you noticed hogan’s lateral shift toward at the end of his backswing / top of his downswing. I always got the impression that he did this as a sort of trigger / timing move. I’ve always thought golf swing geeks (like me) tend to maybe pay a little too much attention to how perfect hogan’s positions are at parallel, top of swing, impact, etc. and probably not enough attention to how rhythmic / fluid his swing actually was. I’d be curious to see (maybe in a future video) what changes hogan made to his swing after his car accident. If I’m correct, all of these swings are post-accident. There’s one down the line video of him pre-accident that’s probably my favorite single golf swing ever recorded. Always wonder what he would have been able to do in his career. Thanks for the video!

4:00 ... modern golf swing? are you kidding? very few players today turn their hips this much or get their left foot off the ground. the majority of current pros have an arm swing that relies on split second timing and a hand flip at impact.
