I personally wouldn't call Ben Howard a mainstream artist, he just happens to be well known these days. He didn't get his name around going on every chat show, no massive advertising campaign. No the bulk of his original popularity came from word of mouth. I came across him randomly on youtube when his most hit video was like 5000. Since his name has got around through a lot of people going "Look at this guys he's incredible". Unlike a lot of the crap in the charts, he generally loves his music.
